Ottawa River now fully recognized
an historical trade and transportation route during the fur and timber eras, its modern importance to businesses in both Ontario and inQuebec, and its significance to the In- digenous People, as the river travels through traditional Algonquin territory.The Ottawa River is home to more than 300 species of birds and over 80 at-risk species. In July 2016, the Ontario side of the Ot- tawa River was granted heritage status by the Minister of Environment and Climate Change and the Minister for Parks Canada, Catherine McKenna, along with Ontario’s Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry, Kathryn McGarry. According to the CHRS,
the river was nominated and eventually accepted as a Heritage River, mainly due to the role it played in the development of Canada – its importance as a travel route, but also its industrial use for logging and hydro development – and the role it played to the choice of Ontario as the capital of the country. “Preserving the Ottawa River for swimming, drinking and fishing is key to the vision of Ottawa as the greenest capital in the world,” said McKenna. The Ottawa River is the eight largest river in Canada and flows through 1271 kilometres of the Laurentian region in both Quebec and Ontario

We would also like to know what participants hope to gain from the summit.” SNC sponsorship will cover the cost for workshop participation, accom- modations, andmeals during the summit. Ontario Nature staff and volunteers will provide supervision during the weekend event. SNC partners with youth on climate The South Nation Conservation Au- thority (SNC) is partnering withOntario Nature on hosting the 2017 Youth Sum- mit for Biodiversity and Leadership.The three-day conference is Sept. 22 to 24 at the YMCA Geneva Park in Orillia. The SNC will sponsor one of the youth leaders eligible to attend the conference. Youth leaders, ages 14 to 19, from across the province will attend interactive work- shops on sustainability, nature explora- tion, and climate action.

Although, this designation is mainly symbolic due to the fact that the rec- ognition as a CanadianHeritage River does not actually impose any binding regulations to the environmental protection of the river. At most, the title brings about awareness around the Ottawa River and provides the foundation for justifying the preservation of the river in the future.
