MCADAM DESIGN ENGAGED IN RIGOROUS STAKEHOLDER WORKSHOPS TO DISTIL REQUIREMENTS AND SHAPE DESIGN OUTCOMES IN COLLABORATION WITH THE CLIENT, PROJECT MANAGER AND MAIN CONTRACTOR… Architectural lead services by McAdam Design
Presenting a considerable design challenge, AMIC’s Factory of the Future is a standout project for McAdam Design. The Belfast-based consultancy worked with project manager Arcadis to provide architectural lead services, supported by its long-term design partner Hassell’s UK. Martin Hare, Managing Director, says, “The main challenge for the design team was to create a state-of-the-art building which could host several innovative and evolving technologies including AI, simulation/digital twins and cloud computing. “This transformation, combined with QUB’s leading-edge research, is bridging the physical and digital world to enable manufacturers to develop smarter and autonomous systems that will enhance efficiencies, reduce effort and rework,
increase productivity and improve quality.” McAdam engaged in rigorous stakeholder workshops to distill requirements and shape design outcomes informed by comprehensive feedback. The resulting 10,500sqm AMIC facility provides an open-access environment with a wide range of specialist spaces including a large-scale engineering hall, laboratories, metrology suite, cleanroom facilities, offices, meeting rooms, collaboration spaces, VR suite, an auditorium and a café. A key component in successfully delivering the project was adoption of a two-stage early contractor involvement route. Both Arcadis and McAdam have extensive previous experience with this approach, as well as working within the structure of a NEC4 Option C target cost contract. “Main contractor Henry Brothers was
appointed using this approach and embraced the partnering ethos with enthusiasm to provide programme, buildability and added-value enhancements to the project,” says Martin. “Their commitment to exceptional build quality, combined with rigorous site inspection by the design team, have manifested in an outstanding project at completion.” David Losty, Arcadis Project Director, says, “We’re extremely pleased to have played a pivotal role in delivering this key facility, with our client commending our team for an exemplary client experience. “I’d therefore like to take this opportunity to thank our design team for their contribution, and in particular McAdam, with whom we have a long-standing and successful business-to-business relationship.”
