drupa Releases Global Trends Report reported by Greg Kishbaugh O n the heels of the drupa trade fair, held last summer in Düsseldorf, Germany, the 4th annual Global Trends report will soon be released in its entirety. But an early evaluation of the report shows that print is recovering well globally from the 2007/2008 economic crisis. “Last year’s drupa showcased a global print industry that has regained its confidence in the future,” said Sabine Geldermann, Director drupa,“with lots of fresh technology and applications demonstrated to en- thuse both printers and their customers alike. This repor t shows that while lev- els of confidence vary between regions and markets, overall the print industry is on the up and will in- vest strongly to secure a prosperous future.” Roughly 850 printers and more than 300 suppliers represent- ing all regions and markets who visited drupa last year partici- pated in the survey. “All printers, whatever market or region they are from, know that if they want to succeed in the long term, they must con- tinue to adapt to the ever changing market and economic con- ditions,” said Geldermann. “This needs a ruthless approach to efficiency and automation while at the same time learning new skills and adding new value services. Nevertheless it is gratify- ing to report that overall, print got its ‘mojo’ back.” As to the general confidence of printers, globally, 42 percent of printers described their business as “good” in 2016, while only 11 percent reported it as “ poor,” a net balance of +31 per- cent, the highest recorded global result of the report series. Flexible Packaging To Reach $238B The global market for f lexible packaging is expected to be valued at $238.5 billion by the end of 2016 and $358.7 billion by the end of 2024. In terms of materials, a majority of the global flexible packaging market uses polymers. By the end of 2024, the usage of polymers in f lexible packaging is expected to be valued at $223.5 billion. Remaining Flexible Stand-up pouches are expected to remain the leading product type manufactured in flexible packaging. By the end of 2024, stand-up pouch products are expected to generate a revenue of $85.9 billion. Its leading demand is attributed to the ease of storage of stand-up pouches, superi- or extension of shelf life for fluid contents, and above average abilities of taking on flexographic print.

Corrugated Boxes Demand, Prices On Rise

activity will encourage higher demand for corrugated boxes, which are used as shipping containers for many of the goods that operators in these sectors produce and require. Overall, growth in demand for corrugated boxes will allow operators to raise prices without risking losses in business from buyers. Finnish Converter Invests In Folding Carton Suite Finnish packaging printer Jaakkoo-Taara Oy, which specializes in the pharmaceutical, healthcare and food industry, invested in Xeikon’s Folding Carton Suite with a Xeikon 3500 digital press to add digital capa- bilities to its existing offset and flexo production. Jaakkoo-Taara Oy was founded in 1935 and employs 115 people. Each year it prints more than 20,000 packaging and printed projects. In other news, Xeikon has established a direct pres- ence in India. This move follows Xeikon’s decision to create a direct-to-market approach in Australia and New Zealand. Starting in March 2017, Xeikon will build on the mar- ket presence through its parent company FlintGroup to support and service the label, folding cartons and commercial printing segments of the Indian market.

While prices dropped in 2015 and 2016, IBISWorld expects the price of Corrugated Boxes to shift direc- tion and rise 3.9 percent in 2017. “This increase can be attributed to swelling de- mand and increasing input costs,“ said IBISWorld Procurement Research Analyst, Mark Seraydarian. “Additionally, the market-wide $50 per ton price hike on linerboard, which went into effect in Octo- ber 2016, will contribute to price growth,” he contin- ued. “On the input side, the price of paper, which is one of suppliers’ key production inputs, is expected to shift direction and rise due to increasing wood pulp prices. Because of this, suppliers are expected to pass rising input costs to buyers in the form of higher corrugated box prices.” Through 2020, IBISWorld expects demand from key buyers (including grocery and food distributors) to rise, partly due to further growth in the population, which will increase the amount of food shipped via corrugated boxes. Consumer spending is also pro- jected to continue increasing amid general wage growth, thereby increasing demand for various goods that are shipped in corrugated boxes.Additionally, ac- celerating mining, manufacturing and other industrial
