Is concussion therapy safe? The majority of the medical community came to a consensus that physical activity and cognitive stimulation (using your brain to read, watch TV learn or otherwise think) had an adverse effect on how quickly someone recovered after a concussion. However, recent research from the Academy of Neurologic Physical Therapy shows that starting physical therapy sooner can help recovery. In fact, people who have physical therapy in the first weeks after their concussion do not require any more sessions than those who wait until their symptoms become chronic. Rather than having adults wait two weeks before beginning therapy and having children wait as long as four weeks to start, new research suggests everyone could benefit from and should start physical therapy much sooner. If you or a loved one has suffered a head injury, you still have options. Call TODAY to schedule an evaluation with ProActive Physical Therapy.

There has been long-standing belief that the only way for a concussion to heel is to limit a person’s movement / activity. However, new research suggests that physical therapy can play an important role in recovery after a concussion. Curious? Call our office and find out whether concussion therapy is right for you or your loved one. What is concussion therapy? Most people with a concussion experience short-term symptoms including confusion, and headaches. However, many of these symptoms persist along with:

• Headaches • Neck Pain • Muscle weakness • Poor balance • Visual problems • Dizziness

• Nausea • Slurred speech • Sensitivity to light / noise • More fatigued • Irritable

Concussion therapy can use physical therapy processes to treat these symptoms rather than simply waiting for them to subside. This type of physical therapy typically begins once your initial concussion symptoms have subsided.

EXERCISE OF THE MONTH

What Is A Concussion Anyway?

DUE TO THE COMPLEX NATURE OF A CONCUSSION, PLEASE CONTACT YOUR PHYSICAL THERAPIST FOR DIRECTION BEFORE ATTEMPTING ANY EXERCISES ON YOUR OWN

A concussion can be considered a form of traumatic brain injury that can alter the way the brain functions. Concussions can occur from direct or indirect impact to the skull or brain. What is the most common misconception about concussions? A big misconception is that a concussion only occurs as a result of a direct blow to the head from events such as a car crash or football tackle. If an athlete gets a few seemingly minor hits in a soccer game or a basketball game, they don’t think they have a chance at suffering a concussion. So they don’t report it. Instead, they keep playing which can be very dangerous. A concussion may be caused by a direct blow to the head, face, neck, or elsewhere on the body if the force of the impact is transmitted to the head. It’s important for athletes, parents and coaches to understand that multiple small impacts can cause one to occur. These smaller impacts can still cause symptoms like headaches, trouble concentrating, and behavioral changes. When athletes and parents understand that a concussion can begin from multiple smaller impacts, they start taking note of those during games and practices which helps with early recognition. Why is it so important to have a program specific to concussion management? Education of understanding concussions is important. We educate patients and give them the tools they need to recognize when a concussion occurs so they are not putting themselves in potential danger for further injury by continuing to play. A concussion is a bruise to your brain that can affect a person’s performance physically and cognitively. Our care addresses both of these areas and monitors the patient’s symptoms to allow them to return to sport / activity with increased safety. How can a physical therapist help? Physical therapists can evaluate and treat many problems related to concussion. Because no 2 concussions are the same, a physical therapist will examine your neurological, orthopedic, and cardiovascular systems in order to best prescribe a routine to address your particular symptoms and your needs in all of your daily environments.

“With the help of the staff at ProActive, I was able to make full recoveries...” Over the course of my high school football career, I experienced two season-ending concussions. The first occurred in a game during my junior season. I was hit from the side by an opponent, and everything went black. Before I knew it, staff from ProActive was there to evaluate me. They went through the typical questions you might ask someone who is concussed, such as, “How many fingers am I holding up?” They determined it was not suitable for me to continue playing, and my season ended there. My second concussion came in a game during my senior season. I was again hit by an opponent from the side, but this time, it felt different. I was laying on the ground and thinking that hurt more than usual. Once I stood up, everything around me was moving, and I felt disoriented. Steve from ProActive came out on the field to evaluate me once again. We went through the same procedure, and my season was ended there for the second time. Some of the main symptoms I dealt with following my concussions were headaches, an inability to focus my vision on specific people or objects, and sensitivity toward light. I received instruction from ProActive on how to alleviate the symptoms as well as recover as safely as possible. When it came to resuming activity, one of the therapists would perform physical and cognitive tests to determine if it was safe for me to return to activity at that time. With the help of the staff at ProActive, I was able to make full recoveries, and I currently experience no lasting effects.” - Braden Jahn
