Art often starts with a line. Lines show the edges of objects. Artists look at an object’s edges and break those edges into smaller pieces that eventually fit together. We draw the edges of the whole figure and the edges of the parts of the figure as we identify and create purposeful lines.

When we look at this drawing we see very few lines, but they are purposeful the body. The artist completes the face and her hair with just a few lines. Which line shows us the lady’s curving arm? lines that show the edges of Which lines suggest the neckline of her dress? Which line shows the back of the neck and shoulder?
