Letter from Sylvia Strobel

3 Year in Review

Twin Cities PBS (TPT) is an audience-first organization. This means our programming is responsive to our community—you, our viewers— and what you need and want. The last few years have been challenging on many levels, and we heard you ask for hope, connection, creativity, and trust. That is what your support helped us deliver this year. At TPT, it was a year to inspire, build, and create. As you read through these pages, you will see that we continue to focus on what you care about most: education, information, history, arts, and culture programming. Yet, we have a tradition of innovation and experimentation. We tell stories differently. We deliver programs across many platforms—not just broadcast. We feature new collaborations and deepen engagement with longstanding partners. We bring our communities’ stories and talents to the national stage. As we look toward the future, we will continue to provide the high- quality programming our viewers expect from us. We will do this while educating, entertaining, and telling stories that matter—and are accessible to all. It is our privilege to serve the community we call home, and we hope you will share with us what resonates with you. We are here with you, for you, and because of you. Thank you for your support!

Bring Her Home tells the story of three Indigenous women fighting to vindicate and honor their missing and murdered relatives. TPT Inspires Action

Bring Her Home is a one-hour documentary that sheds light on the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW) movement and shares the powerful stories of three women — a politician, an artist, and an activist — each of whom is working to find healing and hope for themselves and for their community. TPT’s premiere event for Bring Her Home drew over 400 attendees from as far away as Alaska and Australia. After attending the virtual event: • 98% of survey respondents planned to learn more about the issue of MMIW. • 98% planned to share what they learned with others. • 93% felt inspired to act. Bring Her Home aired nationally in primetime on PBS, screened at 26 film festivals from Montana to New Zealand, and represented the United States at the international public television conference INPUT 2022 in Barcelona, Spain. The film also screened at the prestigious ImagineNative Film and Media Arts Festival in Toronto. To further the educational impact of Bring Her Home , TPT Learn collaborated with Native community leaders and educators to develop an educational content guide

I especially wanted young Native women to see the power in ourselves—to see how powerful we are when we unite and come together in community; strengthen our identities. Whether that is through art or language, your voice can be strong.” – LEYA HALE As reported by Tom Cherveny of the West Central Tribune for students grades 9-12. TPT Inspires Awareness and Change

Led by a racially diverse team of producers, writers, and community contributors, Racism Unveiled was a multi-year storytelling initiative that explored and brought awareness to Minnesota’s systemic inequities to help audiences envision and act toward a more equitable future.

A highlight of the Racism Unveiled initiative this past year was the launch of That Got Weird , an innovative, animated series that uses first-person stories, humor, and honesty to spur discussion of everyday racism in Minnesota. The series was released on TPT’s YouTube channel and website. To date, it has drawn over 72,500 views. The series is being actively used as a tool in racial equity training by organizations across the state and nation, including the Minnesota Department of Health, the Minnesota Department of Management and Budget, HealthPartners, and anti-racist community groups beyond Minnesota. Stream episodes online at tpt.org/that-got-weird .

Racism Unveiled also continued to illustrate how legacies of racism in Minnesota have contemporary impacts and how barriers to justice and equity are built into our systems. “Racism Is in the Air We Breathe,” a multimedia online storytelling project, spotlighted environmental racism, sharing the Phillips and Hawthorne communities’ fights in Minneapolis to protect the health of their community members (below).

I use these [episodes] as a teaching tool for my young son and cousins so that they can be informed as young adults.” – THAT GOT WEIRD VIEWER

WINTER WARM UP! EVENT | PHOTO CREDIT UCHE IROEGBU

Over the past two years, TPT has collaborated with the University of Minnesota’s Center for the Art of Medicine to produce a four-part series on the intersections of art and medicine. The second hour-long episode, Art + Medicine: Speaking of Race , premiered in April 2022 and featured physicians sharing stories about race, racism, and anti- racist efforts in the medical community. The episode won an Upper Midwest Emmy Award. One aim of Racism Unveiled was to connect with and engage Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) communities through relevant, accessible programming and events. Through collaboration with community- based partners, two events focused on engaging BIPOC communities in outdoors activities: • Biking Through History and for Your Health • Winter Warm Up! These events provided opportunities for people to connect with and explore outdoor activities. Biking Through History (above right) had over 75 attendees ride through South Minneapolis and Winter Warm Up! drew over 200 attendees to snow tube and cross- country ski in Theodore Wirth Regional Park.

MASHOPOLIS (WORKING TITLE)

What if there was a show that leveraged the mass appeal of video games, along with everything that’s GOOD about them? In the fall of 2021, TPT began development of a second national RTL children’s program. The series focuses on helping children ages 5-8 develop critical executive functioning skills that lay the groundwork for future success in school and the workplace. The project includes 80 11-minute animated television episodes in English and Spanish, a portfolio of interactive games and apps, and a website where children can explore visions of their future selves. Both Hero Elementary and Mashopolis (wt) are explicitly grounded in an equity framework. TPT’s Diverse Writers Workshop recruits and develops aspiring script writers, and the Mashopolis Equity Council developed Equity Principles for Media Production. TPT’s commitment to diversity and inclusion is integrated throughout all project components, and reflected in feedback from educators, parents, and children. [ Mashopolis (wt) activities] added that element of play and learning at the same time, which is something I always think kids need more of, especially at this age, that play-based learning.” – EDUCATOR

TPT Creates Critical Networks

TPT NOW is a multilingual, 24/7, health, safety, and emergency preparedness public information resource designed to fill communication gaps between public health/safety agencies and cultural communities. Through its network of cultural media partners, TPT NOW reaches thousands of people with culturally relevant, language-appropriate information about health and safety.

During COVID-19, TPT NOW worked with the office of Governor Tim Walz, the Minnesota Department of Health, and the Minnesota Department of Public Safety to simulcast real-time press conferences in English, Hmong, Spanish, and Somali languages. TPT NOW broadcast 27 multilingual press conferences reaching a combined 1.7 million people, added 114,000 followers via TPT NOW social media posts, and drew more than 75,000 engagements with content. Last summer, TPT NOW partnered with FBI-Minneapolis to raise awareness of hate crimes within Black, Hmong, Latinx, and Somali communities.
