November 4, 1951 GOD REVEALS HIMSELF TO MOSES Ex. 3:1-7,10,13-15

which was not consumed? First, it was a revelation of God as a holy being (v. 5). The fact of the holiness of God is fundamental in the Word. Moses needed this revelation of God to take to his own people, to the Egyptians, to the world. No revelation is more needed today. If men were convinced of the holiness of God they would not trifle with His laws as they do, the institu tion of marriage, for instance. Secondly, it was a revelation of God as a God of light and not of darkness. The prevailing idea of the gods of Egypt was that they dwelt in darkness and mystery. Moses now received a vision of God who shines brightly above the light of the desert sun. GOD IS LIGHT and in Him there is no darkness. This revelation kept getting brighter and brighter until finally He came who said “ I am the light of the world.” Thirdly, this was a revelation of God who dwells among His people but does not consume them (w . 2, 3). Moses was particularly attracted to the fact that though the bush blazed brightly yet it was not consumed. It spoke- of God who delivers His people. See v. 7. Though Israel was suffering affliction in Egypt, God had not forgotten them and was going to preserve them and deliver them. We need this revelation. God is still with His people in the bush. In their affliction. He cares, He provides. As God came that day to dwell in a humble desert bush so He has deigned to live in our hearts to give guidance, comfort and light. Finally, the burning bush was a reve lation of God whom man can know inti mately (v. 4). God talked to Moses face to face and called him by name, “ Moses, Moses.”

Pointers on the Lesson As God called David at a later time when he was shepherding the flock so the call of God came to Moses as he was in “ the backside of the desert” tending his father-in-law’s sheep. The circum stances connected with this call were different from those attending any other call. But the principles' connected with it were the same as operate in every call of God to man. The Time of the Call v. 1 God’s special call to Moses came dur ing the forty year period when he was in the land of Midian following his flight as recorded in chapter two. Moses’ life naturally divides into three forty year periods, the second of which re lates to our lesson. It was connected with his desert experience. Many a man has been called from some quiet, out-of- the-way place and occupation to become a mighty servant of the Lord. So it was with David, Elisha, John the Baptist, William Carey, and David Livingstone. The Manner of the Call vv. 2-7 The call came through “ the angel of the Lord.” Who is this Angel? It is Jehovah. See w . 4, 7, 14. It is even Jesus, the pre incarnate Son of God. It is interesting to note that the expression “the angel of the Lord” never appears in the Bible again after the birth of Jesus. Walking at the head of his flock one day, Moses saw a strange light in the midst of an acacia or thorn bush. He turned aside to see, and from out the bush the Lord spoke to him. What was the significance of the burning bush
