Our Award- winning NLS Legal Advice Centre

Our on-site teaching law firm – NLS Legal Advice Centre – is a fully regulated law firm that provides free and low-cost legal advice to the local community and businesses. It gives students an invaluable opportunity to gain fantastic practical experience working with real clients, as they see cases through from start to finish. Since its creation, our law students have worked with qualified solicitors and legal professionals in the Centre to support clients seeking guidance in social security tribunals, employment appeals, tenancy disputes, and much more. The Centre has won multiple national awards for its commitment to providing access to justice, and advises clients across a wide range of legal areas – from employment rights, to housing and welfare issues, to business law. It plays a key role in supporting the local community, whilst developing your practical legal skills and preparing you for a successful career. Over the last five years, the Centre has supported Nottinghamshire residents to claim over £4 million in compensation and recovered benefits.

Student opportunities

All Nottingham Law School students have the opportunity to get involved with the Centre, whether as part of their course or on a voluntary basis. There are numerous projects you can get involved in throughout your time at Nottingham Law School, with opportunities including: • legal advice and representation • the Outreach Advice Project • the Miscarriage of Justice Project • the Streetlaw Project • overseas placement opportunities • community engagement and volunteering • the Free Representation Unit (FRU) • the Student Pro Bono Committee • the Autism Law Service

Modern Law Awards 2020 Winning both ABS of the Year and Paralegal of the Year – awarded to Caseworker, Callum Scott. The NLS Legal Advice Centre was the UK’s first law firm fully integrated into a law school when we obtained our ABS licence in 2015. LawWorks and Attorney General Student Pro Bono Awards 2019 The NLS Legal Advice Centre was awarded Runner- Up in this category for their efforts in recovering compensation and benefits for their clients.
