NRO Trainer Casting Call Submitted by: Shannon Ciccotelli, Senior Training Manager, Nado’s PERi PERi

Objective

To provide successful training for a new restaurant opening in a short period of time with limited resources.

How an interview emergency ultimately led to a stronger training team and a new standard practice for group interviewing at Nando’s.

The Problem We needed to build a strong team of 10 trainers for a New Restaurant Opening (NRO) in just one week.

We decided to hold a group interview session in order to evaluate candidates quickly. We identified the key skills candidates needed to be successful on the NRO training team, and designed a day that brought all candidates together to assess their skills in less than 6 hours. How it Works The day started with an icebreaker that showcased candidates’ attention to

detail and ability to multitask. Then, we moved on to a training “how-to” activity to bring out leadership, mentorship, teaching ability, and organization. We incorporated games to allow candidates to show a variety of character traits and identify their individual strengths.

Results

We found that star candidates clearly stood out from the rest, and once selected, went on to contribute to successful restaurant openings—we saw above-average scores by our third opening using this method. Even more telling, the employees identified through this hiring process achieved a 27% promotion rate within the first six months. We believe this interview process has helped us identify emerging leaders in our organization quickly, easily, reliably, and inexpensively.
