Game On: Boosting Training Retention with Gamification Submitted by: Alex Govea, Sr. Manager, Ops Support & Communications, Del Taco

Objective

How it Works Create a game where trainees can use teamwork to compete against each other and practice their newly learned skills. As an example, let’s pretend our team members are going through training on how to make a new menu item—a pizza that requires 6 pepperonis to be placed in an “L” shape. Use a fun game to inspire competition and comaraderie, plus improved retention of training objectives. To incorporate immersive training experiences such as games to help team members learn objectives while having fun.

A training game based on this new menu item might go like this: 1. Divide learners into 2 teams of 3 people each. 2. Have them line up along a table or counter, with pizza-making supplies in front of them. 3. When the trainer says “Go” the first person from each team grabs a pizza crust (we practiced with tortillas) and 6 pepperonis and quickly puts them into the correct shape. 4. When the first person completes their task, the second person can start, and once they’re done, the third can start. 5. The first team to complete the task successfully wins!

Results You can offer a prize to the winning team, but just the excitement of winning and bragging rights are usually great motivators on their own. Training games can be free and don’t take a lot of time, but they can really skyrocket your employee engagement and retention of what they learned.
