Making Your Training Memorable with Music Submitted by: Jack Woznick, Director of Training & Development, Toro, Toro, Toro, Inc.

Objective

Music taps into emotions, aids recall, and can even help learners develop strong new memories. Plus, it’s fun!

To add music to training programs to incorporate a fun element and to help make training stick.

How it Works

Music has a unique ability to tap into our memories and transport us back in time. Almost everyone has a song that triggers a particularly intense memory like your first kiss, learning to drive, a dear friend, a special event, a pivotal time in your life, or a heartbreak. Music has deep connection with your brain and the ability to impact mood, memory, and it can even relieve illness and pain.

Two recent studies found that music not only helps us retrieve stored memories, but it can help establish new ones as well. Listening to music activates areas of the brain associated with reasoning, speech, emotion, and reward, in addition to memory. We wanted to tap into the power of music and it’s potential to create strong memories and aid recall by using it in a really fun way with our training videos.

We used music clips that connected with the training topic, such as an ingredient in a recipe that we were teaching. For example, a music clip of the iconic Beatles song “Strawberry Fields” plays during the training video for how to make a strawberry cucumber cocktail.

Results

Incorporating music into our training programs has been rewarding. Music has increased team member engagement and improved knowledge retention, due to developing a stronger connection to the content through music.
