FATHER’S DAY WITH 2 SONS Being a father is one of the most important jobs I have. Before I had Conor and Liam, my life revolved around my business and marriage. But now that I am a father, my priorities have shifted dramatically. Every day, I strive to be a better person so that I can be a good example for them. It’s important to be a positive reinforcement to help shape and influence their lives.

of the week, and then I have a three-day weekend. It’s great, but I think about how hard she has it because she’s with them all the time. I am so appreciative to know that I have someone who will be a good mother while I’m at work. I don’t know if I’d be able to handle that, personally. Nicole does an amazing job holding down the fort, and I’m glad that I can provide for her and the boys. Looking back to my childhood, I feel like there are a lot of similarities and differences. When you become a parent, there are a lot of things that you want to do differently than what you remember your parents doing. When I’m interacting with Conor and Liam, I can spot the similarities between my dad and me. The most important thing is how big of an impact I have on their lives. Father’s Day never meant much to me when I didn’t have kids. It was just another day. Now that I’m a father, it’s a unique feeling knowing that I have two amazing sons and I get to watch them grow into astounding individuals.

Fatherhood is very different from anything I’ve experienced. On the one hand, you lose all your free time, but on the other, it’s not disappointing at all — quite the opposite. Conor is 2 1/2, and watching him start to understand the world around him is really rewarding. He’s growing and learning so much! It’s exciting to look ahead and know how much more is in store for him. My free time is now all about my sons, and I love every moment.

- Dr. Todd P. Sullivan

When Liam came along, I was thrilled to have another son, but I learned pretty quickly that two kids is no walk in the park. Everything feels balanced when you have one, and you feel like you’re really busy, but with another you only realize how busy you hadn’t been before. Now, with two, I understand the true meaning of “busy” — there’s so much that goes on! Sometimes, I look at my friends who have four or five kids, and I can’t even imagine how busy they must be. Having two kids has been just a mind-blowing experience overall. It’s been delightful to create a bond with Conor and now to establish the same relationship with Liam. Both of them are incredible, and they’re both very different people. I’m looking forward to watching their personalities develop and seeing who they become.

I’m very thankful for my wife, Nicole, who always has my back. Nicole stays at home with the two kids while I’m at work. I’m away for four long days

THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX Unconventional Summer Jobs for Teens As your teen becomes more independent, they may be interested in getting a summer job. Whether they want to save up for a big purchase or just have some extra spending money, summer jobs can solidify the importance of hard work and responsibility for your child. Plus, the earlier your teen starts, the sooner they can learn how to manage their money. Fast-food restaurants and clothing stores are popular first jobs, but encourage your teen to think outside the box and try one of these creative money-making opportunities. ONLINE SURVEYS AND REVIEWS Companies are eager for consumer feedback, and they are willing to pay for it. Sites like Swagbucks and MySurvey offer members the opportunity to complete tasks like taking surveys, writing reviews, and watching videos to redeem rewards in the form of cash or gift cards. Teens can also preview up-and-coming music as reviewers on Slice the Pie. Sites like these require quite a bit of work for a relatively small wage, but they can be the perfect first job for a child who wants to try earning a few bucks for the first time. Teens under the age of 18 will require parental consent. VIRTUAL STOREFRONTS If your child has a flare for arts, crafts, or anything else DIY, encourage them to set up an Etsy shop. There are no membership fees, and after Etsy’s 3.5 percent cut, sellers receive their profits via PayPal. Minors age 13–17 must have a parent or legal guardian manage their Etsy account. PETSITTING AND HOUSESITTING If your teen is trustworthy and responsible, there’s no reason they can’t work for neighbors, friends, and family. Most professional petsitting and housesitting services require their sitters to be over 18, but Care.com allows teens 14–17 to register as “Teen Providers” with parental consent. Depending on where you live and how much experience your teen has, they can expect to earn $15–30 per visit, and they may be able to ask for more to stay overnight. Help your teen get the word out by posting on social media. Most importantly, keep your teen safe by helping them screen clients and teaching them what information to share. Summer jobs are a great way for teens to earn extra cash and learn responsibility. The next time your teen asks you for money to go to the movies, encourage them to earn some spending cash of their own. Who knows? They might actually treat you to a movie sometime!

IS TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE RIGHT FOR YOU? At NOVA Chiropractic & Acupuncture, we strive to provide the very best care with exceptional patient experience. We give our all to make Northern Virginia the healthiest it can be, one patient at a time. One way we do this is by providing a branch of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) that’s the oldest continuously practiced healing system worldwide — acupuncture. Acupuncture uses small needles with the width of a hair to help the body get more from its own natural healing resources. Our bodies produce a wide range of natural pain-relieving substances, anti-inflammatory chemicals, hormones, immune system enhancers, and so forth without the use of drugs. But we don’t always get 100 percent performance from our self-healing resources; acupuncture helps our bodies get closer to that percentage. Acupuncture can be helpful to you when other treatments have failed, and NOVA Chiropractic & Acupuncture utilizes the most advanced acupuncture techniques available today. Acupuncture can help relieve neck pain, back pain, headaches, sciatica, carpal tunnel syndrome, shoulder pain, allergies, infertility, stress, and anxiety. “I’ve seen cases that have had astounding results,” says Dr. Todd P. Sullivan, chiropractor at NOVA Chiropractic & Acupuncture. “Too many people suffer with pain and injuries. Acupuncture is an effective treatment that helps patients live their best life, pain-free.” Our acupuncture office provides a system that allows us to monitor your progress. The AcuGraph system is a device that helps us diagnose our patients accurately and quickly. It can check the acupuncture points throughout your body and graph the results on a computer so our patients can actually see themselves improving from treatment to treatment. The AcuGraph also allows us to reevaluate your treatment using the information it provides. We can see how you’re improving and modify your treatment as needed.

If you’re in pain and nothing has worked, it’s time to take action. Call our office today at 703-912-7822 to learn how we can help you.

WORKOUTS WITH A TWIST Make Exercise Fun This Summer

the intense cousin of tennis. Instead of hitting the ball back and forth over a net, racquetball players take turns hitting the ball against a wall. This creates momentum, and the ball moves much faster, so there’s a lot of jumping and lunging across the court as players try to reach the ball before it can bounce twice. Bring a water bottle, because you’re sure to sweat during this cardio workout.

Summer is a time for fun! The days are longer, so why waste the extra sunlight trapped on a treadmill? There are plenty of great opportunities to exercise without feeling bored out of your mind. Consider one of these fun activities you may have never tried before.

STAND-UP PADDLEBOARDING

INDOOR BOULDERING

Stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) is the fastest growing water sport in the world, and it’s pretty simple. You stand on a paddleboard — like a surfboard, but wider and more buoyant — and use a long paddle to glide across the water. It’s the simplicity that makes SUP fun. You can battle fierce river rapids and waves on the ocean, or enjoy a more relaxing experience paddling across wide lakes and lazy rivers. Whatever your skill level, you’re building core strength, improving your balance, and getting some fresh air.

Bouldering is a form of rock climbing using a boulder rather than the side of a cliff. You can bring the activity indoors, where artificial climbing walls and safety mats help climbers ease into the sport. This pastime works your arm muscles and core, but it also challenges your mind. There’s a lot of problem- solving as you figure out the best way to navigate the wall. Exercise doesn’t have to be a chore. There are plenty of great ways to work up a sweat and still make great memories this summer. You just have to be willing to try something new.

RACQUETBALL

In order to play racquetball, you need to have access to a racquetball court. If you can find a court near you, this game is certainly worth trying. It’s
