is therefore “touched with the feeling of our infirmities.” And so it is written with reference to Israel’s sufferings in Egypt, “In all their affliction he was afflicted, and the angel of his presence saved them.” Every varying circumstance in life is a fresh occasion for a deeper knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ. We cannot learn the precious truths of the tenderness of His humanity without passing through times of deep suffering, in which His divine sympathy is needed and realized. — S e le c t ed . JUNE 8 What to D o w ith Sinful Thoughts “Try me, and know my thoughts’’ (Psa. 139:23). Cleanse your heart of all unclean thoughts, of all angry and revengeful thoughts. . . . Let no sinful thought settle in your heart for a moment. Call aloud on God the instant you discover its presence. Wherever you are, and however you are employed, and in whatsoever com pany—that moment call on God. That moment pour out your heart before Him. He knows all that is in your heart in that moment of temptation, and He waits to see what you will say to Him about your heart, and what you will do with it. Dis appoint Him not. Neglect Him not. Dis please Him not. “JTrust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart be fore him: God is a refuge for us.” — A l e x a n d e r W h y t e . JUNE 9 Remember, Return, and Repent "Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen” 1 (Rev. 2:5). We speak of the commission of foul and deadly sins as “falls.” But losing the first love is also a fall, for it is a crime against the person of Jesus, our dearest Friend. Have you lost your first love? Put the question to yourself, and do not shrink. Then notice the Lord’s exhortation and promise. “Remember.” Reflection is the first step to restoration. Let memory travel back over the bright years of the long ago. Recall those days of fervor, of daring, of loyalty, of communion, of glad soul-laughter. Have they gone forever, like the swift stream whose waters return not? If so, Christ bids thee: “Repent.” Do not let pride conceal the facts from your heart. Face the matter, and turn around. Then, “return” ; do the first works. Get back to the simplicity of life and to child like confidence in God; get back to full surrender of spirit day by day. And then, as an overcomer, there is awaiting you the glad promise of mystical fruit from the paradise of God.— S e le c t ed . JUNE 10 When Adversity Is Opportunity “There was given me a thorn in the flesh . . . For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me. And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee : for my strength is made perfect in weakness” (2 Cor. 12:7-9); Paul’s thorn was not pleasant to him. He prayed to be rid of it. But when he found it had come to stay, he made friends with it swiftly. It was no longer how to dismiss, but how to entertain. He stopped groaning and began glorifying. It was clear to him that it was God’s will, and that meant new opportunity, new victory, new likeness to Christ. What God means is always too good to be lost and is worth all it costs to learn. Let us learn as swiftly as we may. Time is short. — M a l t b ie D. B a b c o c k .
