criminal charged with guilt. And there is the umpire, when the games are over, who tells you who has won the prize because he has run fairly and well, and who has lost the prize because he has not run fairly or well. What we have before us here is the Lord’s umpire seat, where He is going to judge about the races. It is a judgment for service from beginning to end, a time when every one shall have his praise—just the praise that he has earned from God. — H ubert B rooke . JUNE 28 Love That Is of God "Put on therefore, as the elect of God .. . bowels of mercies” (Col. 3:12). Put on a heart of compassion,_says the wise apostle. Some elect and gracious souls seem, indeed, to have this heart from the very outset of their lives. It is as if they could do nothing else. It comes to them spontaneously as the linnets pipe and sing simply because they must; as the flower unfolds, and cannot help itself. But how good it is for me, who have no inborn fac ulty of loving, that I may put on a heart of compassion! I can do it by asking God, day after day, to take out of me my selfish, censorious, critical, untender, evil .heart. . . . . I can do it by claiming, morning by morning, the grace of the Paraclete, the Comforter, the Holy Ghost. — A lexander S m ellie . JUNE 29_ . Enduring Derision “They talk to the grief of those whom thou hast wounded” (Psa. 69:26). God’s children, under His chastening hand, do not escape the derision of those who are enemies of the truth. In the midst of our deepest need and bitterest trials, we may have the perpetual sunshine of a Fa ther’s countenance. It is only sin that brings the dark shadow between our souls and God. If we know that we have His favor, we can patiently endure whatever suffering may come to us from the world. If He gives peace, who then can give trouble ? But the servant must not be surprised or discouraged if the enemies of God treat him in the same fashion as they treated his Master.— S elected . JUNE 30 Rest in the Lord "They that know thy name will put their trust in thee” (Psa. 9:10). In the measure in which we know the Ldrd, we are satisfied with Him, and we accept His discipline as a proof of His love. Those who would know that the Lord is satisfied with them, must be satisfied with the Lord. First, the believer sees all his salvation in the Lord; then chooses Him as his chief good, his all; then resolves to cease from any trust in himself, or circum stances, or creatures, and places all his con fidence in God. This is like stepping off the wreck onto the Rock. We all want a perfect one to love, to look up to, and trust in; and the Lord our God is that Perfect One. He is worthy of all our love and all our confidence. We should rest in His pres ence, in His pardon, in His preservation, in His provision, in His power, in His pa tience, in His peace, and thus live to His praise.— E v a n H . H o p k in s . nature have special value. I have observed from week to week the marked interest on the part of young and old as Mr. Talbot has given these object lessons. I heartily commend them to teachers, mothers, or any who are interested in the training of children. Any children's evan gelist will find them very practical.’’ DR. E. L. McCREERY, Dean of Bible Institute of Los Angeles: “I most heartily commend Mr. Talbot's book, OBJECTS THAT TALK AND TEACH, as it meets a long-felt need on the part of many pas tors and Christian workers, who are desirous of impressing .spiritual truth on the minds of the children of their congregation.’*

“The object talks by Mr. Talbot to the chil dren, young and old, at the Church of the Open Door, are the finest and most markedly Spirit- inspired of any to which I have ever listened. It is a joy to know that they are to be put in shape so a wider circle may get their messages, and perhaps some of God’s messengers may be able to use them again.’’ MRS. ANNA L. DENNIS, Teacher of Christian Education, Bible Institute of Los Angeles: “That is not first which is spiritual but that which is natural; and afterward that which is spiritual. This is God’s order.
