PRIDE OF JENNI’S QUEST TO BECOME ‘THE NEXT VO ROGUE’ Past of the

By Patrick Bartley

V o Rogue’s front-running tactics captivated the nation and earned him multiple victories in the late 80s and early 90s. Now, decades later, a new phenomenon, Pride Of Jenni, has emerged with remarkable speed and tenacity. As she prepares for the $3 million TAB Australian Cup (2000m), racing enthusiasts eagerly anticipate the outcome of this historic race, drawing parallels to champions like Vo Rogue. The 1988 Bicentenary Australian Cup was billed as one of the most eagerly awaited encounters the famous Flemington Racecourse had seen in decades. Vo Rogue, a crowd favourite due to his daring front-running style of racing, was up against the legendary Bonecrusher who was looking for back-to-back Australian Cup wins. An enormous crowd gathered to see Vo Rogue add the Australian Cup to his already imposing record. Despite being more than eight lengths in front with 300m to go, the horse was overtaken in the final 150m by unlikely contender, Dandy Andy, leaving spectators at Flemington astounded. Trained by country trainer Jim Cerchi, Dandy Andy was a five-year-old who started at 125-1 and left the crowd at Flemington stunned with the result. Amazingly, Dandy Andy finished fourth to Vo Rogue in the St George Stakes (1800m) at Caulfield two starts prior, a whopping thirteen lengths behind the champ.

ECHOES OF THE PAST

In his call of the race, Bruce McAvaney exclaimed “Vo Rogue is home, he’s so far in front!” Even after the race, McAvaney quipped that if he’d had the call again he would have said the same thing. But while Vo Rogue was defeated that day, he captivated the Australian public for the next two years. His origin story made his feats even more amazing. Neither his sire, Ivor Prince or his his dam, Vow, had ever won a race, making Vo Rogue’s galloping talent even more freakish. He was trained by ‘battler’ Queensland trainer Vic Rail, who was known for his unconventional training methods. Despite this, people came in droves to see the daring tactics of Vo Rogue. Bravely going straight to the front in his races, he carved out extraordinary sectional times that most horses found impossible to counter. He won 26 races, earning $3.1 million from 1986 to 1991. He scored six Group 1 wins, including two Australian Cup victories in 1989 and 1990, and two seconds in the race in 1988 and 1991. He also notched up ten wins at Group 2 level. He held track records in six metropolitan racecourses at the same time, a feat that no horse in Australia had ever achieved.

It’s an ability rarely seen that horses can run extraordinary sectional times and yet keep going. Cyril Small (Vo Rogue’s jockey) ”

Following an injury and a dip in performance, Vo Rogue was retired in 1991 to Jeff Perry’s farm, where he lived out his days until the age of 29. Thirty-six years since that epic 1988 Australian Cup, it would seem another racing phenomenon has emerged in Pride Of Jenni, a mare now garnering support not unlike Vo Rogue. Pride Of Jenni has served it up to her opposition by leading in staggering times against the cream of Australian racehorses. In the All-Star Mile, Pride Of Jenni left her opposition standing when she bounded away before the turn, proving that she will, like Vo Rogue, be highly competitive in this year’s TAB Australian Cup. Vo Rogue’s longtime jockey, Cyril Small, can see similarities between the two horses. “They can both go out and run, and run hard and manage to stave off their opposition,” he said. “It’s an ability rarely seen that horses can run extraordinary sectional times and yet keep going.” Pride Of Jenni’s jockey, Irish-born Declan Bates, agrees with Small that the mare has freakish tendencies that are rarely seen in racehorses. “In her younger days it took a little bit of training and settling, but once she matured she has become the fastest horse I’ve ever ridden in my career. She’s strong, she’s tough and just beats her rivals through sheer speed,” Bates said.

ECHOES OF THE PAST

ABOVE: Declan Bates and Pride Of Jenni after leading all the way in the 2023 Champions Mile. (Morgan Hancock/Racing Photos)

Both Small and Bates agree that their respective mounts were a pleasure to ride, as all they had to do was rate their horse in front and then they would largely do the rest. Even experts in equine health are at a loss to explain why horses like Vo Rogue and Pride Of Jenni have the constitution and ability to master a racing style that so few horses have. Could their endurance stem from a similar trait of another famous mare, Makybe Diva? One veterinarian suggested that Makybe Diva’s three Melbourne Cup victories were aided by her “huge lungs and an ever-so-slow heartbeat that helped her racing style no end when it came to the endurance of races over two miles.” Whatever it is, all eyes will be on the TAB Australian Cup, a race that Leigh Jordon, Executive General Manager – Racing says will be a ‘titanic battle’. “As well as Pride Of Jenni, we have the cream of Australia’s most brilliant weight- for-age horses chasing her. “It will be one of the most compelling 2000m races of the autumn and a battle of endurance. “Sadly, because of injury Gold Trip will not be in the race. He would have certainly relished a hard run 2000m at Flemington.” We can only hope that it is as incredible as that 1988 edition of the race after which even the trainer of the winner heaped praise on the freakish Vo Rogue. “I was fortunate to have seen Phar Lap as a young man, and I must say, I think Vo Rogue was the next best horse,” Jim Cerchi said. Such accolades highlight Vo Rogue’s stature in racing history, a position that Pride Of Jenni could ascend to if she emerges victorious in the 2024 TAB Australian Cup.

VALE John Russell

By Patrick Bartley

J ohn Russell, one of the last race callers from an era where entertainment was a priority, has passed away at the age of 93. John Russell, alongside Bert Bryant, Bill Collins, Joe Brown and Jack Styring, made a profound impact on horse racing in Australia with their colourful race calls. Russell, who was born in 1930, was the son of a railways ganger. Raised in Warrnambool, an area renowned for its racing scene, he soon developed a love of horse racing and sport. After leaving school at 14 following the death of his father, Russell worked at the Nestlé factory as a packer by day and by night he sang in a dance band. Following a chance meeting with radio identity, Harry Fuller, Russell was offered a job with a local radio station calling football to the Hampden League and broadcasting occasional race meetings. In 1952, Russell’s first break came when the legendary Bert Bryant fell sick before the Warrnambool May carnival and he recommended Russell take his position at 3UZ for the three days.

The radio station then offered Russell the role of second announcer alongside Bryant, recognising that their successful racing coverage was a key factor in their high ratings at the time. A devout Carlton supporter, Russell demanded that his contract stipulate that if the Blues made the Grand Final, he would have the day off regardless of the importance of the race meeting he was missing. Russell was also well-known for his photographic memory – if asked, he could still remember the names and colours of his first Grand Annual in 1937. Fellow race callers were saddened by the loss of Russell and remembered him for his quick wit, and that incredible memory.

These men called under often difficult circumstances, but they entertained, and people hung on every word. John was the same, and able to recount so much of the past. Greg Miles

Bryan Martin said that Russell came through an era of race calling that was so important to the industry. “There was no TV, there was just radio and they had to paint the picture for all of those at home, in pubs or in betting rings around the nation. “His recall for dates and places was extraordinary. He would tell you parts of racing history that very few would know. We were a part of a great team at 3UZ, and Bert Bryant and John Russell played pivotal roles in making racing an enjoyable and fascinating business,” Martin said. VRC Chairman, Neil Wilson, speaking on behalf of the VRC, was appreciative for the contribution made by John over a long period time.

John Russell was a friend to the Victoria Racing Club and our thoughts are with his loved ones. John made a significant contribution to racing and to the history of Flemington Racecourse as a voice of the Melbourne Cup for 20 years and a proud ambassador for the Cup Tour in later years, VRC Chairman, Neil Wilson

This week also marks 33 years since his longtime friend and colleague, Bert Bryant, also passed away. Russell called 20 Melbourne Cups during his long and outstanding service to the racing industry.

VALE Mel Schumacher

By Joe McGrath

Mel Schumacher returns to scale aboard Baystone, winner of the 1958 Melbourne Cup.

T he VRC was saddened to learn of the passing of 1958 Melbourne Cup winning jockey and prodigious riding talent Mel Schumacher. Schumacher would secure the 1958 Melbourne Cup aboard Baystone, a modest performer which hit peak form at the right time. Schumacher was 21 years of age at the time. In 1958 it would be a year of firsts in Melbourne Cup history with No.7 saddlecloth saluting for the first time and the first use of upright barriers when starting the Cup field. Schumacher would win other Flemington features including the 1961 VRC Australian Cup aboard Dream King and the 1968 VRC Sires Produce Stakes on the Tommy Smith-trained, Flying Fable. VRC Chairman, Neil Wilson acknowledged the achievements of Mel Schumacher, one of only 124 individual jockeys to win Australia’s most iconic horse race. “The Victoria Racing Club sends its condolences to the family and friends of Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Mel Schumacher after his passing,” Mr Wilson said.

Many jockeys spend their whole career trying to win the Cup and Mel managed to achieve it at 21 years of age thanks to his incredible skill in the saddle. He will forever be remembered at Flemington Racecourse.

From a non-racing background yet an outstanding apprentice, the Queensland-born Schumacher was not without controversy, falling foul of NSW Stewards post the running of the 1961 AJC Derby. Schumacher would be initially banned for life for impeding another race rider. The ban would be reduced on appeal to ten years and then subsequently to five and a half years. After a lengthy term on the side-lines, he returned to race-riding with success accumulating over 2000 race winners. Schumacher was first apprenticed to Brisbane-based trainer, Kevin Young before moving over to Melbourne Cup-winning trainer, Dick Roden. Based in Brisbane and later Sydney, his talents came to the fore very quickly securing a ride in the 1957 Cup as a 20-year-old. Mel was inducted into the Queensland Sport Hall of Fame in 2009.
