CROWN OAKS DAY
FLEMINGTON THURSDAY 5 NOVEMBER
THE CARNIVAL CONTINUES AT CROWN COME FIND IT
CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME
Crown Oaks Day! We celebrate a race day distinct from all others, with its relaxed yet glamorous ambience and its focus on the Group 1 staying classic for three-year-old fillies. It is a carnival day for all, featuring fun, food, friends, flowers, festivity and the best of Fashions on the Field. Welcome to fantastic Flemington. Oaks Day on the Thursday after the Cup
has been an integral part of the Melbourne Cup Carnival program for more than a century and a half. This year we are honouring the unique achievement of a super filly from Geelong, Briseis, who won the Derby, the Cup and the Oaks in the space of six days, exactly 150 years ago. The Oaks has produced so many champions. Auraria, Evening Peal and Light Fingers also went on to win a Melbourne Cup. In recent years we have celebrated the likes of Treasurethe Moment, Jameka and Miss Finland, while those with long memories revere great staying fillies such as Research, Rose of Kingston, Surround and Chicquita. Crown Oaks Day offers top class racing all day. It includes the Cirka Red Roses Stakes, a contest for our best sprinting fillies. The Channel 9 Chester Manifold Stakes of 1600 metres honours the memory of one of the VRC’s most revered past chairmen. The much-anticipated Melbourne Cup Carnival Country Cup final is restricted to winners and runners-up in qualifying races at Benalla, Murtoa, Cranbourne, Hamilton, Horsham, Geelong, Sale and Bendigo. The Sharp EIT Subzero Handicap is unique: open to grey horses only, in every shade from near black to white. It is our tribute to the late Subbie, the grey gelding who won the 1992 Melbourne Cup winner and who in long retirement became a universal favourite. Enjoy everything that Crown Oaks Day has to offer.

BRISEIS STAR OF THE OAKS
STAR OF THE OAKS Briseis
By Dr Andrew Lemon
W hen the Geelong filly, James Wilson’s Briseis, won the VRC Oaks in 1876 two days after winning the Melbourne Cup and five days after winning the Victoria Derby, the magnitude of her achievement passed most racegoers by. It was expected, after all. Although decent prize money was on offer, only three fillies came to the starting post for the Oaks, and Briseis was a cut above them. Peter ‘St Albans’, a lightweight boy, had won on her in the Cup, but at the higher set weights in the Oaks she was ridden, as in the Derby, by Tom Hales, the best in the business. Naturally Briseis started odds-on favourite. The distance was 1½ miles (2414 metres), the winning time was slow. She won easily.
18
BRISEIS STAR OF THE OAKS
The following Saturday she returned to Flemington to contest the rich Mares’ Produce Stakes. The prospect of four wins looked bright as Briseis led up the home straight, only to be passed by Pride of the Hills. What those racegoers of 1876 could not have guessed is that in the 150 years to follow, no filly would ever emulate those three victories: Derby, Cup and Oaks. Still, there are two other champion fillies who came close, and their achievements have too often been overlooked. Auraria, a daughter of dual Melbourne Cup placegetter Trenton, came to Flemington in spring 1895 with the Adelaide weight-for-age Elder Stakes and the South Australian Derby to her name. In the Victoria Derby on the opening Saturday she ran a close third to Wallace, champion son of Carbine. On Tuesday she won the Melbourne Cup in a huge field of thirty-six, beating Hova who had won a Newmarket Handicap. On Thursday, Auraria won the Oaks, easily. As with Briseis, it was a small field, four starters only. On the final Saturday she contested the weight-for-age C.B. Fisher Plate against Wallace and Hova. That race was two miles, like the Cup. The result was a thriller: Auraria in front, Wallace wearing her down. No photo finish in those days. Dead heat, said the judge! Frances Tressady has the distinction of being the last filly to win the Victoria Derby—and that was in 1923, more than a century ago. She

also won the Oaks. She came close to equalling the achievement of Briseis, because she too ran in the Melbourne Cup, finishing fifth to Bitalli. In modern times, owners and trainers prefer to keep their staying three-year-old fillies for the Crown Oaks alone. Between Auraria and Frances Tressady, four fillies won the Derby and Oaks double: Lady Wallace (1905), Wilari (1911), Carlita (1914) and Furious (1921). Of these, only Furious and Carlita attempted the Melbourne Cup in between. Both finished unplaced. While Briseis will retain her distinctive record, there are other reasons why her story attracts special notice. Her dam, Musidora, bred, owned and trained by James Wilson, ran in five Melbourne Cups, finishing second to Banker in 1863. It took a while for a Wilson horse to win the Cup. In 1870, his son James junior finished second on Lapdog to Nimblefoot, and next year again he rode second placegetter, Romula, behind The Pearl. At last the younger brother, William, won the Cup for the stable in 1873 on Don Juan. This bankrolled Wilson’s new establishment, the famous St Albans Stud in Geelong. The boys outgrew their jockey proportions and became footballers, so little Peter Bowden, riding as ‘St Albans’, became the stable lightweight.
20
BRISEIS STAR OF THE OAKS
Briseis was handicapped to carry 6 stone 4 pounds (just 40 kilograms) in the 1876 Cup, which explains why Peter got the mount. Earlier that year at Randwick, when Briseis was still a two-year-old, the pair won the Doncaster Handicap, as the filly had the even lighter weight of 35 kilograms. Rumours later arose that Peter was a ‘waif’ rescued from the streets by James Wilson, but family records show he was the son of Irish immigrants who settled at St Albans. The baptism register at St Mary’s Basilica, Geelong, tells us he turned twelve a few days after winning the Cup on Briseis. One other quirk belongs to the Briseis story. For the first time a gold cup was presented as a Melbourne Cup trophy, gift of the retiring VRC Chairman, James Blackwood. It was crafted by noted Geelong goldsmith, Edward Fischer, and was much admired. Alas, in a later generation, this elaborate trophy was sold and melted down for its gold, with only one portion retained for posterity, still in private hands: it took the shape of a medallion, inscribed with the names of Briseis, James Wilson and Peter St Albans. Briseis is best memorialised by the flourishing Briseis Club, founded in 1995 and actively supporting not just racing but sporting excellence in the City of Geelong and region. This super Oaks filly will not be forgotten.

CROWN OAKS THE HISTORY OF THE
F irst contested in 1861, the same year as the inaugural Melbourne Cup, the Crown Oaks gives three-year-old fillies the opportunity to shine over the classic 2500-metre distance. The race has produced several future Melbourne Cup contenders, including two winners of the great race, Evening Peal and Light Fingers. On two occasions, however, the winner of the Melbourne Cup has returned just two days later to claim the VRC Oaks, with Briseis achieving the feat in 1876 and Auraria in 1895. The Oaks brings together fillies who showed Group 1 talent as juveniles and those who have taken longer to mature, developing with age and the rise in distance. Former elite two-year-olds and juvenile Group 1 winners such as Miss Finland, Samantha Miss and Slight Chance feature alongside talented early performers including Jameka, Mosheen and Dear Demi. The honour roll also includes later-developing stayers such as Miami Bound and her dam, Arapaho Miss, as well as more recent winners Brazilian Pulse and Faint Perfume. Bart Cummings and James Wilson share the record for training the most VRC Oaks winners, with nine wins apiece. Bobbie Lewis and Damien Oliver have each ridden seven winners, with Oliver securing three consecutive victories from 2019 to 2021. Last year’s winner had an Irish flavour, with trainer, jockey and breeder all from the Emerald Isle. Remarkably, Strictly Business progressed from a Ballarat maiden to Group 1 Crown Oaks winner in just 13 days. Confident he was aboard the best staying filly in the field, John Allen angled her towards the centre of the track, where she powered home to deliver Ballarat trainer Thomas Carberry his first Group 1 victory.
