EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Coventry University is a dynamic, modern university with a proud tradition as a provider of high quality education and a focus on applied research. The University ranked 13th in the Guardian University Guide 2019 and was voted University of the Year for Student Experience in The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2019. We are continuing the evolution of the University Group and as we look to build on our position of strength we aim to continue to create state-of-the-art campuses for our students, staff and visitors. Our Strategy to 2021 will enhance our position as a leading provider of innovative education and impactful research both nationally and internationally, reinforced by the fact that we were awarded the Gold rating and ranked 2nd in the UK for Teaching Excellence in the Teaching Excellence Framework (2017). A very high quality of estate provision is a key enabler to this.
We have invested £500m in the estate in the last 9 years including the addition of a ground-breaking £55m Engineering and Computing Building, an award-winning £35m Student Hub as well as the new £64m Science & Health Building which was opened in 2018 by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. To deliver the vision of the Corporate Strategy we have ambitious future Estate Development plans with several key projects underway including a second building for the Engineering and Computing Faculty, the redevelopment of the Faculty of Art and Humanities Building and a new home for our CU Coventry subsidiary. In addition we are moving ahead with the masterplanning and redevelopment of the 4.3 acre City Council Civic Centre site to create a truly world class headquarters which will give the University a real focal point for students, local people and visitors.
Reporting directly to the Chief Operating Officer & Deputy Vice-Chancellor, the Group Director, Estate Development will lead the delivery of the masterplan and capital pro- gramme supporting the strategic development of the Group’s Estate (in the UK and beyond), ensuring that development is forward thinking, has student satisfaction at its heart and is future proof and sustainable. We are seeking an individual with a proven track record in a senior estate development leadership role with experience of initiating, developing and delivering estate development strategies and programmes to support an organisation’s institutional strategy. You will have strong leadership and management skills, with the ability to lead and inspire team members and internal and external stakeholders whilst effectively managing resources across a complex portfolio of activities.

COVENTRY UNIVERSITY GROUP
We are a leading edge University Group with a dynamic operation, which is globally enabled and technologically advanced. The Coventry University Group is known for providing a ground-breaking high-quality learning experience for all of its students; delivering research which is focussed on “excellence with impact” in areas of niche dominance; a commitment to internationalisation in student recruitment, partnership and collaborative working, alongside a global curriculum and staff and student mobility; and a real “business engaged” model of enterprise and innovation. While we have become a global institution, we respect our history. In 2018, we celebrated 175 years since our ground-breaking institution began in Coventry. Our origins in Coventry as an industrial city serve as a reminder of the need to ensure that our courses reflect the needs of individuals and employers, that our research should have “originality, significance and rigour” with a world-leading reputation, and that our engagement with business in enterprise and innovation should support social and economic prosperity – all within a local, national and international knowledge economy. A focus on growth and continuous improve- ment in teaching and learning, research and internationalisation has seen the University rise rapidly in both the Guardian University rankings and in the Times and Sunday Times Higher Education UK rankings.
Through an approach that is partnership driven, entrepreneurial and sustainable, both financially and operationally, we are recognised within the higher education and business sectors as leading edge. Our reputation reflects an institution that is confident in its mission, in itself and in its consistent execution and delivery of objectives. We recognise that our staff are central to the success of the University Group and continue to build the capacity and capability of our people to achieve impact on the quality of teaching and learning, research outputs and impact, enterprise development and our ability to operate globally. We are an employer of choice and aspire to be rated nationally as one of the best places to work. In recent years Coventry’s student satisfaction levels and teaching quality have been rated amongst the best in the UK, culminating in being awarded The Times and Sunday Times University of the Year for Student Satisfaction 2019, which in turn has led to impressive rises in every major university league table. The institution is the country’s top modern university in the Guardian University Guide 2019 in which it ranks 13th overall – and is The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide ‘Modern University of the Year’ for 2014, 2015 and 2016. In 2017 the University achieved the top accolade, TEF Gold, in the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF), published by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE).
A total of 134 higher education institutions took part in the TEF with just over 30% achieving Gold, meaning that Coventry scored higher than several Russell Group institutions. The TEF judging panel noted that Coventry - where the focus on outstanding teaching and student experience sits alongside developing research excellence - has: • “Consistently outstanding student support services to all students, in particular those from disadvantaged backgrounds, that assessment and feedback that effectively supports students from all backgrounds towards progression and attainment” • “An outstanding institutional culture that places emphasis on recognising and rewarding excellent teaching” • “An outstanding focus on employability and developing entrepreneurship skills that are highly valued by employers.” The Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014 results portend well for the ambitions that Coventry University has going forward – the university was ranked joint 5th in the UK for the quantity of its research in the allied health professions category receiving the top ratings of four or three stars, with many other areas also being rated as ‘world leading’ and ‘internationally excellent’. support retention and progression” • “A rigorous and critical approach to

The University and the city of Coventry itself has a lot to look forward to over the next decade. As far as ‘town and gown’ relationships go, the University and the city council enjoy a hugely positive rapport which has paved the way for the University to transform the city’s skyline and make an enormous contribution to its economy over the years. It was announced in 2015, a deal with the council, Coventry University will be investing a further £125 million into new buildings in what will be the largest and most significant development in its history. The project still in early design stages, will house a new headquarters, new international student centre and new business incubation unit are all part of the plan, and will all have a role to play in the University’s ambition to be truly world class in everything that it does. OTHER LOCATIONS Coventry University has a wide-ranging and innovative portfolio. Having successfully launched its London campus in 2010 – which is now thriving with around 1,000 students – and CU Coventry in 2011, the University has extended its geographical reach further launching CU Scarborough Campus in September 2015 and CU London in 2015. Bringing a new era in higher education to the region, its focus is on making it more accessible, flexible and affordable to meet the lifestyle and career aspirations of modern learners. True to Coventry University’s longstanding reputation for having strong links with industry, it has collaborated with the Unipart Manufacturing Group a ‘faculty on the factory floor’ which was created in response to increasing demand from students to have industry experience and employability embedded in their course. The Institute for Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering allows students to study and work alongside industry professionals in a real manufacturing environment, with a unique opportunity to engage with genuine industry projects. When students graduate, they already have the frontline experience that they know is sought after by employers.
