From the General Manager
Hi everyone, Welcome to our Summer edition of Home Stories – the last one for 2022! It’s been a busy time for us here at Housing Choices Tasmania. To mark Anti- Poverty Week (16-22 October) we held a range of resident events and activities including Story Time at the Burnie Child and Family Centre and The Big Table Community Lunch at the East Devonport Neighbourhood House. It was great to see so many of you there, and we couldn’t have done it without the hard work and contributions from our community volunteers, partners and service providers. You can see some photos from the events on page 6-7. We caught up with our incredibly talented Shorewell Park resident Ian, who has been making wooden model boats by hand for almost 28 years. Being completely blind
has not stood in Ian's way! You can read his interview and see his inspiring works of art on page 4. We have recently received the results from our 2022 Resident Satisfaction Survey. The surveys are an important opportunity for us to hear from you - your thoughts, feelings, and opinions. Your feedback helps us to understand what you’re happy with and where we need to improve, so a very big thank you to everyone who took the time to respond. We will share the results with you in our next Home Stories newsletter. It was a privilege to meet with two of our ‘Your Future Scholarship’ winners; Maryam and Mohadisa. They’ve each been granted a $1,000 scholarship to put

Despite being completely blind, long-term Shorewell Park resident Ian has been making intricately detailed wooden boats by hand for over 28 years.
Ian came to Shorewell Park almost 32 years ago, when he moved from Strahan in order to take his then-young daughter to a local school. Over three decades later, he has laid down roots and become a part of the local community. “I love this place. I know where everything is. The shops are close, only about 100 metres away. There’s plenty of people here who know me. They help me to cross the road and check on me to make sure I’m doing okay.”

Ian’s connection to boats goes back a long time, having been a cray fisherman for 35 years on the West Coast. “I’d been on fishing boats all my life, going with the fisherman along the reef coasts. But when I moved here, I had to find something to do with my time.” It wasn’t until Ian was visiting a friend in Somerset who had a model boat, that Ian had the idea of making them. “I thought I was only going to make one...28 years later, here I am.”
The wooden boats are time-intensive to make and require a huge amount of focus, patience, and skill. “Each one takes about 100 hours to make. I probably make six or seven a year. I think a lot of people may not have the patience to make them, but they give me something to do.” Ian uses Huon Pine and is fortunate enough to have a friend who gives him offcuts from his sawmill. He also uses fibreglass, and material from blinds for the sails.
He estimates that he’s made about 220 since he started. “I’ve given some away to friends, occasionally I’ll sell one, which will cover the costs for materials and lets me take a trip to Bunnings.” Ian’s boats showcase his skill in both craftmanship and creativity. His most recently completed work? “I’ve just finished a pirate ship!”

Story Time at the Burnie Child and Family Centre To kick off Anti-Poverty Week, children were invited for Story Time at the Burnie Child and Family Centre on Tuesday 18 October. There was morning tea and lots of activities for the kids. Around 50 people attended, young and old! Families, grandparents and children from the community were joined by Burnie Child and Family Learning Centre staff,
St Vincents, The Smith Family, Boomerang Bags (community sewing group), West North West Working Group and the Pataway Collective. Hot drinks were enjoyed by all, and the kids were given a morning tea fruit and cheese platter, ‘what to pack’ lunchbox refill containers and free school library bags. Thanks to the sunshine the children were able to play freely outside.
Anti-Poverty Week 2022 events and activities To mark Anti-Poverty Week (16-22 October 2022) events were held around Tasmania with our incredible partners. Thank you to everyone who supported these events by showing up. It was great to see so many

Big Table Community Lunch
Neighbourhood House Block Party We were delighted to take part in the Ulverstone Neighbourhood House Block Party on Wednesday 19 October. Almost 100 people attended, including some of our residents along with Ulverstone and West Ulverstone community members. A very big thank you to Neighbourhood House staff and volunteer community helpers for making this happen! Andrew from the Neighbourhood House said, “I would like to thank everyone involved with the Block Party for Anti-Poverty Awareness. From the chefs in the kitchen through to the face painter, and childcare minders which gave the parents a chance to shop at the pop-up op shop. Your help and support for the community is amazing and highly valued.”
Family BBQ And to conclude our Anti-Poverty Week events we held a Free Family BBQ at the Wedge Street Community House in Smithton on Thursday 20 October. Thanks to everyone who came along! Hannah helped to serve a free breakfast to the local community, along with staff from Anglicare, Safe Spaces Burnie and the Salvos. St Vincent's Anti-Poverty Week Breakfast We also took part in St Vincent’s Anti-Poverty Week Breakfast on 19 October in Burnie. Our Community Development Officer
On a beautiful sunny day after almost a week of flooding, 90 community members joined us for the Big Table Community Lunch at East Devonport Community House on Wednesday 19 October. In recognition of Anti-Poverty Week, this year’s theme was ‘join our call to halve child poverty by 2030’. Guests were welcome to take their lunches away, but due to the beautiful weather, most people stayed and ate together. Residents were also given a bag filled with assorted goods including biscuits, pancake mix, and canned soups. Big thanks to the East Devonport Neighbourhood House and
their dedicated team of volunteers for organising such a great day.
