Titans triumph over Invaders in NFC final

The Northern Football Conference (NFC) final over the August 18 weekend finished with a 52-0 blowout victory for the Toronto Titans, giving the club its first NFC title. Tom Denison led Toronto’s offence with 24 completions in 32 attempts for 404 yards and four majors along with one run across the goal line himself to earn the Offensive

Player of the Game honour. Titans Sean Spencer was named the Defensive Player of the Game. The Titans now prepare for a run at the Canadian Major Football League Champi- onship trophy when they face the Lloyd- minster Vandals Sept. 22 on the Vandals’ home turf in Lloydminster, Alberta.

Ottawa’s NFC team looks back on a good season with the Invaders winning their title shot in the quarter-finals August long weekend by roping the Oakville Longhorns 29-7 at Carleton University’s Keith Harris Stadium. That earned the Invaders a run with the Tri-City Outlaws, NFC defending champions, in the semi-finals over the Aug. 11 weekend at Keith Harris Stadium. Ottawa edged Tri-City out of the running 15-13 with the Invaders’ final two plays of the night. The win was sweet revenge after last year’s 12-11 defeat for the Invaders to the Outlaws in the 2011 NFC champion- ships at the University of Waterloo. “I told the guys that since this was our last home game of the year, it was their last chance to put on a show for their family and friends,” stated Coach Ken Evraire. “It may have been a little too muchy of a show.” The Outlaws leaped into the lead when Shawn Ashe blocked a punt from Ottawa’s Jeff Morris and then recovered the ball in the end zone. The Invaders took over the game with a 15-7 surge on touchdown passes from Jeff Hildreth to Matt Harmer and Brandon Weekes with Morris providing two conversion kicks and also a single point on a missed field goal effort. Tri-City made a fourth-quarter push for a touchdown by Chris Kusch on a fourth down and a five-yard goal run. Invaders de- fensive back Allens Pierce sabotaged a two- point conversion for the Outlaws and saved the lead for Ottawa when he tackled Kusch. Ottawa mustered its own long drive with fullback Raymond Alidu running hard across the field. The Invaders ran down the clock time until a turnover with 17 seconds left to play put the ball on Tri-City’s 37-yard line. Hodges and Shaw sacked Outlaws quarterback Brian Rose to fix the win for Ot- tawa.
