Algonquin land claim progress report
governments and the Algonquin Nation have all agreed to further review of the preliminary draft based on the comments and suggestions made during the various public meetings and stakeholder inter- views. The goal is to have a possible final draft
AIP ready to present to Algonquin Nation voters for ratification at the end of this year. The draft AIP will be available for public review at least two months prior to the ratification vote. Once all three sides have approved the draft AIP then negotiations can begin on
the final land claims agreement. Crane noted that, based on past examples of other aboriginal land claims in Canada, this stage of the process may take be- tween four and five years to conclude, including time spent in public consulta- tions.

L’ORIGNAL | Another step forward is taken on the Algonquin land claim treaty pro- cess for Eastern Ontario. Results of nine public information ses- sions plus more than 100 separate meet- ings with stakeholder groups took place over the past eight months since the pre- liminary draft agreement-in-principle (AIP) was posted for public review and discussion in December 2012. The United Counties of Prescott-Russell council (UCPR) reviewed a four-page sum- mary from Brian Crane, chief negotiator for Ontario on the results of the preliminary draft AIP review during its Aug. 28 session. Crane stated that the provincial and federal
OPP weekly report and Fraud Alert
Hawkesbury Ontario Provincial Police offi- cers (OPP) responded to 227 occurrences, of which 26 were concluded with accusations, in the week of September 2 to September 9. While no assaults have been reported, of- ficers investigated four break and enter in- cidents, six thefts and one impaired driving related incident. On September 4, officers stopped a ve- hicle on Regent Street for excessive loud
music. Further investigation revealed that Pierre Cormier, 36, of Regent Street, had blood alcohol content over the permitted limit and was in possession of metham- phetamines. The driver was charged under the Criminal Code of Canada. Fraud Alert A fraud alert has also been emitted by Hawkesbury OPP Street Crime Team and Hawkesbury OPP Crime Unit to inform all
local merchants in the area to be on the lookout for anyone placing large orders of building materials or other supplies over the phone. Local and regional officers have investigated incidents of fraud where large purchases were made where it was found that the credit cards used were stolen. It is suggested that merchants be diligent and ensure the credit card information is valid along with the purchaser’s identification.
