PROJECT

WILTON HOUSE, BELFAST

ALUMINIUM WINDOWS AND DOORS market-leading products at a fair price, providing value for money. At Wilton House, they delivered on those promises on time, within budget and to a very high standard. T urkington Windows and Conservatories supplied and installed the eye-catching aluminium windows

and doors in the brand-new, five-storey tower at redeveloped Wilton House. The original building from 1837 and the new one are connected by a courtyard and together offer 23 luxury apartments in boutique-hotel style. The windows and doors were fabricated and installed to Secured By Design (SBD) standards for maximum security. SBD is the only way for companies to obtain police recognition for security- related products in the UK. The doors and windows also incorporate non-vision frosted film for the residents’ privacy. QUALITY TO A T Founded in 1982, Turkington is now one of Ireland’s leading suppliers and installers of windows, doors and curtain walling for both the public and private sectors. The Portadown-based firm believes in offering P almer’s Moulding displayed and coving in Wilton House, but also recreating them for all rooms in the 19th- century building. Owner Trevor Palmer was given practically a puzzle of bits and pieces of salvaged coving and used silicone rubber moulds and a lot of talent to put everything together. “It was very time-consuming as we had to replicate all the delicate motifs. Some rooms required up to 200 separate pieces to be lined up and attached to the ceiling,” Trevor explained. “But it turned out well and I would love to work on a project like this one again.” Michael Brannigan from Poplar Investments Limited was very impressed with the result. “I had worked with Palmer’s Moulding before in modern buildings, and Trevor was up to the challenge,” he commented. “He has done an absolutely amazing job!” Michael said

Stephen Gamble, Commercial Manager for Turkington said, “We have the ability to offer high-performance, cost-effective solutions for projects across the commercial, residential, health, retail and private sectors. This experience, together with our commitment to building long- term sustainable partnerships means our clients are assured of excellent quality and value for money every time. Our ethos is one of quality, honesty, reliability, safety and sustainability – Quality to a T. We are delighted to add the redevelopment of Wilton House to our ever-growing portfolio of commercial projects.”

COVING AND CENTREPIECES the only difference between the new work and the original coving is that the details on Trevor’s are much better, while the original incredible craftsmanship by not only repairing the original centrepieces

motifs covered by 200 years’ worth of layers of paint are not as clear. Back in the day, the covings were made of lime plaster and mortar, and bound with horsehair. Even though Trevor’s work recreated the design down to a T, he used plaster and fibreglass for the new pieces. “No horses were harmed during this project,” he joked. Based in Newry, coving specialists Palmer’s Moulding offers a complete “match new to existing” refurbishment and repair service. They also supply and install high-quality plaster mouldings in homes and commercial spaces.
