#NIAW2020 Pictured at the launch of the NI Apprenticeship Week in Belfast are Heather Cousins from the Department for the Economy and the Chairs and representatives from the Departmental Working Groups set up to oversee the NI Apprenticeship Week 2020 and plan key events and regional activity across Northern Ireland: (l-r) Chris Corken, Belfast Met; William Greer, South Eastern Regional College (SERC); Heather Cousins, DfE; Barry Neilson, Construction Industry Training Board (CITB); and Rhonda Lynn (Mid and East Antrim Borough Council).
A fter almost two years of intensive medical treatment, Sean Cox has finally returned to his family home in Dunboyne, County Meath. The former Sales Director at Precision Cables suffered serious brain injuries in an unprovoked attack by Roma hooligans prior to Liverpool’s Champions League semi-final in April 2018. Sean will continue to require round-the-clock care and an extensive programme of rehabilitation, but this remains a landmark moment for a family that continues to handle this most challenging situation with fortitude and dignity. Sean returns home
F ebruary 3-7 marked some Ireland – the first ever Apprentice Week. The week saw educational events take place across the province, with many companies showing their support on social media, encouraging prospective apprentices to take the leap and celebrating those that already had. Many colleges and schools took very important days for the electrical industry in Northern part as well, offering information to employers and the future generation of the industry. During the week,
PAC Group Apprentice, Ben Brown participated in the Inter-Campus Skill Build competition. Ben is a first year Electrical Installation Apprentice at Northern Regional College, Newtownabbey. The judge couldn’t believe that Ben is a first year when he commented on his standard of work, which just shows how quickly and effectively young people can learn on the job. The first Northern Ireland Apprenticeship week proved to be a massive success and we can’t wait to see what’s in store for 2021!
Commenting on his return, Sean’s wife Martina said: “This is a day we as a family have been looking forward to for a long time. While Sean still has a long road to travel, having him

LTP INITIATIVE
THE ECS CHECK IS SET TO MAKE ITS MARK IN NORTHERN IRELAND…
Safety on site
A fter getting the green light from the Northern Ireland Government, ECS Check is now approved and active as a pilot that meets the Licence to Practise (LtP) requirements on government public sector construction contracts throughout the country. The LtP initiative was developed in order to improve Northern Irish electrical safety standards and prevent unqualified persons labelling themselves as electricians. In meeting the requirements laid out in the associated Procurement Guidance Note (PGN 01/16), the new ECS Check allows electrical contractors working in Northern Ireland to meet their LtP obligations free of charge. As well as allowing main contractors and clients to verify the ECS status of
on-site electrotechnical personnel, ECS Check’s online portal lets users produce electronic summaries for auditing and reporting. Free to access, the service shines a light on the entire supply chain workforce, instantly displaying details of qualified electricians, apprentices and other electrical workers employed across multiple projects. For greater flexibility, an ECS Check App is available and enables real-time on-site auditing. Using ECS Check in Northern Ireland is straightforward and hassle-free – the operator simply requests that the main
contractor uses ECS Check to comply with LtP requirements and if they are already using the Employer Portal then this function will be added to their account. In helping to promote a safer working environment, ECS Check plays an important role in continued efforts to establish the highest levels of on-site competency in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. CHARITY NEWS
IEBAupdated events
T he date for the Irish Electrical Benevolent Association (IEBA) annual Race Day in Leopardstown has been changed to Saturday 17th October 2020, after the event was postponed in line with the Irish government’s guidelines on COVID-19. It’s set to be a brilliant day, with many members of the Irish electrical industry coming along to enjoy the fun and thrill of a day at the races at a beautiful venue, with delicious food and beverages on offer. To add to the fun, a racing tipster will be there to keep all guests in on the action. Why not come on down, whether you want to test your luck or just have a great day out. Golf The annual IEBA Charity Golf Outing, which was to take place on 24 April at Killeen Castle Golf Club has also been postponed for now, and the Golf Committee plan to reschedule the outing when possible, so the IEBA can continue to raise funds for all the hard work it does throughout the year. With your help, awareness and support the IEBA can continue to assist those less fortunate in the electrical industry in Ireland through the current crisis. www.irishieba.com
EICElectric Lunch 2020
A drian Logan has compered more than his fair share of functions. So when the former UTV sports presenter says he has seldom encountered the generosity of spirit on show at the 2020 Electric Lunch it’s worth noting. The annual event, organised by the Northern Ireland branch of the Electrical Industries Charity (EIC), brought together close to 250 like-minded individuals from across the island of Ireland. Gathered in Belfast’s Europa Hotel, they were on hand to support the EIC’s designated charity for 2020 - Support for Brain Injury Campaign. EIC Managing Director, Tessa Ogle took centre stage to explain the aims of the latest charitable effort by the industry, and to introduce a touching video focussing on someone from Northern Ireland who has directly benefitted. Assaulted on a night out and left in a coma, Parr Group employee Stephen Ennis and his family were given essential emotional, practical and
financial support by the EIC. To date more than £250,000 has been raised and distributed to worthy causes by the EIC’s Northern Ireland Committee. That total was added to significantly by those in attendance in Belfast. With the man affectionately known as Logie stirring up the crowd, a staggering £19,000 was raised by raffle and auction, with a feature being the decision by several winners to immediately hand back their prize for re-auction. Adrian Logan and guest of honour Liam Beckett MBE, the former Irish League footballer turned author and television pundit, had the crowd in stitches with their witty repartee. Throw into the mix some fine food (and the odd glass of vino) and once again the Electric Lunch proved why it continues to be such a popular part of the electrical industry’s social calendar. SMART TECHNOLOGY
Bridging the gap TIMEGUARD OFFERS INSIGHT INTOWHAT SMARTWIFI TECH MEANS FOR INSTALLERS…
W ith so many smart technology options on the market, both cabled and WiFi, it’s hard to know where to place your bets and which manufacturers to believe. Right now, there is plenty of mainstream work to do, as electricians continue to feature prominently in the skills shortage statistics. You may be reluctant to invest in training and smart tech certification when only picking up smaller jobs that are just beyond the upper limit of DIY-ers’ confidence. That’s where Timeguard’s new WiFi Accessories range comes in. Launched this Spring – it is designed to neatly bridge the gap between DIY and professional installation. Wholesalers who saw the prototypes loved the idea and have been quick to place advance orders – but along came Coronavirus which has temporarily affected production in some factories.
What’s in store when goods begin shipping in a few weeks’ time? Timeguard has designed a whole newWiFi Accessories range, which includes hard-wired smart wall sockets and a core range of out-of- the-box controls. The thought process behind the WiFi Accessories range is that countless DIY gadgets have opened customers’ eyes to the possibilities of smart control, but also showed them all the downfalls. People are ready for professional help and for branded quality and reliability. No-one wants the hassle that comes along with poor quality, inadequate specification and instructions, and lacklustre support. Timeguard and Tuya Smart - world-leading IoT platform The Timeguard development team chose the proven Tuya Smart IoT (Internet of Things) platform
for control of its WiFi accessories range of Wi-Fi controlled devices. Tuya works with Alexa and Google Assistant, and the free app enables consumers to control all of their smart home devices from a single app, as well as any of the other 90,000 compatible products from other manufacturers. Not all Tuya devices are equal, of course – it all depends on what functionality manufacturers decide to build in to their devices and what control to offer users. While the processes for tailoring the Tuya app and getting devices approved is quite robust, a quick internet search will tell you that some device manufacturers have confused and disappointed end- users, and that branded quality will have growing value. With Timeguard you know for sure that genuine Tuya chips have been used, and that good support (from online videos to real people at the end of the phone line) is provided.

SMART TECHNOLOGY
What’s in the Timeguard WiFi accessories range? As ever, the Timeguard approach has been to look at the market, see what devices are available, and then apply lateral thinking to make them do more, and do it better! The Timeguard WiFi accessories range includes… Indoor camera The Timeguard difference: Highly- specified with high-resolution two- way audio, night vision, detection masking, and complete with a USB power supply adaptor, these cameras will get the job done. There is the choice of SD storage or easy upload to subscription- based cloud storage. Doorbell with chime The Timeguard difference: Wait for someone to press the bell or be notified as they approach the built-in PIR detector. Everything you need to get set up is supplied – you’d be surprised how many Wi- Fi doorbells come without a chime! Multiple chimes can be connected, and they plug in to any 13A socket. The doorbell has reliable,
Twin socket The Timeguard difference: These 13A (3kW) sockets for professional installation also provide a handy USB port. Daily and weekly timing programmes and countdown timing are offered via the app, with each socket under individual control. WiFi in-line smart switch The Timeguard difference: The functionality of the WiFi in-line smart switch adaptor is much the same as other products in the range. Just wire this in and pop it through the ceiling aperture or in-line with the power cord of an appliance. There you are - everything you need to supply smart home control that both you and your customers can trust.
Panasonic-branded batteries and is easily recharged via its USB cable when needed (a single charge should last for four months). Plug in timer adaptor The Timeguard difference: Small but mighty, these 13A (3kW) adaptors offer daily or weekly programming as well as countdown timing and overload protection. Power monitoring lets users see at a glance how much power a connected device is using. These are timers you can trust. 3-way trailing socket with 2 USB The Timeguard difference: Pretty much all you need in a single device! Users can time and control each socket individually. Manual over-ride is built in. Bayonet lamp holder adaptor The Timeguard difference: At last, a lamp holder adaptor that will hold a standard BC/B22 bayonet lamp. Naturally, daily/weekly and countdown timing are also provided by Timeguard.

BAHCO ENHANCES ITS VDE INSULATED TOOLS RANGE… Exceeding standards
The Bahco ERGO and VDE certified screwdrivers.
B ahco has strengthened its certified, providing electricians and other users with an extra safeguard. The VDE tools now include an insulated, thumbscrew adjustable wrench, suitable for electrical, plumbing and automotive tasks. All Bahco insulated screwdrivers, plier sets and wrenches meet the international IEC 60900 standard and every tool is tested at 10,000V to ensure it is safe to use for working live at up to 1,000V. While insulated tools provide vital safety protection, Bahco’s ERGO™ tools, many of them range of insulated screwdrivers and pliers, which are VDE VDE certified, protect hands and wrists from the risk of muscle strain or injury, which using tools every working day can cause. These tools fit the contours of the user’s hand, providing safe, firm grip and ‘feel’ as
well as enabling maximum force. VDE stands for Verband der Elektrotechnick, the original Association of German Electrical Engineers. To gain VDE certification, tools have to pass independent, tough safety and quality tests. Bahco’s VDE range includes ERGO™ standard diameter or slim blade insulated screwdrivers with a choice of slotted, Phillips, Pozidriv, Hex or Torx® heads. BahcoFit VDE screwdrivers are also available with the same choice of heads, individually or in sets of two, five or 12 pieces. KLAUKE PROUDLY INTRODUCES THE FIRST 1000V VDE INSULATED BATTERY POWERED HYDRAULIC TOOLS IN THE WORLD…
Anewstandardof safety
I n certain sectors, working on live parts in the low-voltage range of up to 1000V is part and parcel of day-to-day-work. Until now, such tasks have essentialised the use of insulated hand tools. In tight work areas, or when precision is required, the mere use of force required to operate insulated manual hand tools and the necessary associated space pose a safety hazard. Klauke has again set a new standard for innovation and safety in the power cable termination market. Its new Orange line of cable-cutting and compression tools has been carefully developed in the R&D department in Remscheid, Germany and thoroughly tested by VDE for a voltage withstand of 10,000 volts for safe working at 1,000 volts. The new range provides every cable jointer, lineman or contractor with an added layer of safety from electric shock.
The design of the Orange line has
Every single Orange tool undergoes a dielectric test as part of Klauke’s production process.
created an insulation barrier between the working blades/jaws and the body of the tool. If a power cable becomes live, or the wrong cable has been identified, then the new Orange line will add a further layer of protection against electric shock.
“New range provides every cable jointer, lineman or contractor with an added layer of safety from electric shock.”
In the new range there are cable cutters up to 50mm dia, which can cut different cable constructions including steel wire armour, and crimping tools up to 300mm2 Cu and Al. T: +44 (0)1986 891 519 E: klauke-sales@emerson.com W: www.klauke.com/de/en/orange

Some LAs served as a trial site for the
SmartLINK Gateway, Project Managers commented: “In a building that relies on residents for access, we can monitor alarm systems remotely to make sure everything is working correctly, and the tenants are kept safe. The main benefit of this product would be saving time and money while getting an immediate response, rather than going through the normal procedures.” Ei have continuously been at the forefront of Radio Frequency (RF) technology and are now leading the way in revolutionising this technology. The foundation of RF technology simply enabled wireless interconnection between Ei alarms, allowing ease of installation. This technology has been expanded upon and has progressed to now having more capabilities than
ever before. By using in-built GSM data connection and RF interconnection to interface the SmartLINK Gateway with Ei alarms and accessories, easy installation and reliable connection is assured, meaning full visibility of connected RF systems. The Ei1000G SmartLINK Gateway aims to improve efficiency, reduce costs, aid with replacement forecasting and maintenance and enable smart asset management. Events are reported directly as they happen via the online portal, which gives accessible intelligence that can be actioned, reported on and documented. This groundbreaking technology gives a proactive approach to fault-finding, defining any trends in alarm activations and maintenance requirements, while drastically minimising the issue of property access. The SmartLINK Gateway will revolutionise the way in which alarm systems are managed, paving the way to a solution-focused approach to asset management.

HARDROCKHOTEL - DUBLIN
A ROCK STAR ADDITION TO A VIP PROJECT PORTFOLIO BY MICHAEL NUGENT LTD... IRELAND’SFUNKIESTHOTEL
M ichael Nugent Ltd hits the Hard Rock Hotel in Dublin. The company played a central role in creating this latest icon in Dublin’s flourishing hospitality scene, and as the M&E contractor on the project, the team worked closely with the client, Tifco, Caldwell Consulting, architect Consarc and main contractor John Paul Construction to transform and link two heritage buildings into Ireland’s funkiest new hotel. Squeezed into a complex and confined inner-city site on Lord Edward Street, in Dublin’s City Centre, this €52m project involved the refurbishment of the existing three-storey, right notes to deliver a stellar electrical installation at the new Listed redbrick Exchange Building. This property dates back to 1912 and was previously the location for the
Parliament Hotel. It also involved entirely rebuilding the adjacent seven- storey Fashion House along with constructing a glass link bridge that connects both buildings. Style-wise, the hotel retains the red brick façades of its original buildings, but completely reimagines the interiors, with other displays from Hard Rock International’s legendary Florida ‘Vault’ including cymbals that once belonged to The Rolling Stones’ Charlie Watts, and Hozier’s first-ever electric guitar. The four star Hard Rock Hotel features 120 bedrooms, a bar, restaurants and a merchandise shop, and its jewel in the crown – a fifth-floor penthouse boasting a four-poster bed, a handwritten letter by Van Morrison to guitarist Mick Cox and a private, rooftop terrace where guests can

barbecue for up to 40 buddies. The stunning interior design showcases even more iconic music memorabilia and art, all with Irish connections. Working in conjunction with John Paul Construction, Michael Nugent Ltd provided the full mechanical and electrical services installations for this headline project; Ireland’s first-ever Hard Rock Hotel. The Hard Rock Hotel’s location within the heart of Dublin’s Temple Bar created logistical restrictions in terms of site access, high volumes of pedestrian footfall within the vicinity, and considerable and consistent vehicular traffic. Michael Nugent Ltd was onsite from October 2018 to February 2020 as the main M&E contractor, playing a key role in its complex design, mitigating any issues and working tirelessly to ensure the hotel opened on time. The project was a complex electrical installation, which included mains ESB and LV switchgear, kitchen control panels, bedroom consumer units, sub- mains cabling and mechanical controls
cabling. General, emergency, external and bespoke decorative lighting were fitted along with VDA lighting, access control systems and Mode Lighting dimming controls. An intricate fire alarm system was designed along with disabled refuge, toilet alarms and a tailored telephone and data system. Michael Nugent Ltd has a wealth of experience providing M&E services for hotels, with a portfolio that comprises projects across the UK and Ireland, including a previous job with John Paul Construction in Cambridge: The Tamburlaine / O’Callaghan Hotel (now the Clayton Hotel) is a four- star hotel which was also a Listed building. Others include Hampton by Hilton, Edinburgh Airport; Premier Inn, Maidenhead; Lough Erne Resort & Spa, Enniskillen and Hillgrove Hotel and Spa, Monaghan. The Hard Rock Hotel further enhances this ever-growing portfolio and again demonstrates the company’s wealth of experience in providing a professional, high quality service.

EE PROVES THE PERFECT ELECTRICAL SUPPLY PARTNER BY DELIVERING ON TIME WHENEVER NEEDED... ELECTRICAL SUPPLIER
M ichael Nugent Ltd only work with trusted suppliers which is why they turned to The Electrical Equipment Company (EE) to supply a wide range of electrical products for the Hard Rock Hotel project including accessories, bedroom lighting and emergency lighting. The EE team worked closely with Michael Nugent Ltd to ensure deliveries arrived on time – a factor that was critical to the smooth running of the project as it was built on a restrictive site with little room for storage. “We are delighted to have been involved in this fantastic new hotel and add the Hard Rock Hotel to our growing list of prestigious projects,” commented Jake Keyworth, Branch Manager at EE Greentech. “This project required a diverse range of electrical solutions to meet a variety of needs and, working with M&E contractor, Michael Nugent Ltd, we were
able to meet all these requirements.” “The company’s involvement at Hard Rock Hotel is reflective of EE’s ability to provide a high quality service to customers working on projects of all sizes.” EE works across the UK and Ireland and provides a fast and efficient service along with reliable delivery direct to site. “We’ve built up a strong relationship with EE over the past number of years, working with them on several major projects,” says Gareth McAleer, Technical Administrator, Michael Nugent Ltd. “They’re well established and perfectly set up to aid contractors delivering projects of this size. LIGHTSOURCE ILLUMINATES THE LATEST ADDITION TO DUBLIN’S HOSPITALITY SECTOR... HITTINGTHERIGHTNOTES
‘B ohemian and luxurious’, Dublin’s new Hard Rock Hotel brings a distinctly Irish twist to the iconic American chain. So, when the features include a punctuation-free letter penned by Van Morrison, Phil Lynott’s leather jacket, and handwritten Bono lyrics, you’d better have a rockin’ light show to match. Enter stage left Belfast-based Lightsource. A project lighting company with an extensive hospitality portfolio, Lightsource was the obvious choice for the M&E contractor. “We’ve worked with Michael Nugent Ltd on past projects like the Tamburlaine Hotel in Cambridge and Belfast’s Grand Central Hotel,” said Lightsource Director, Anthony Brown. “We have a good working relationship built on trust and our ability to provide comprehensive lighting solutions.” In the case of the €52m Hard Rock Hotel, this involved consultation on the initial concepts created by the Douglas Wallace interior
design team. From there it progressed to global sourcing, production, and installation. It’s an all-encompassing, complete project provision that sets Lightsource apart from the competition. Anthony explains: “There were products from six or seven different countries used on this project, including custom lighting from Barcelona company Bover, from LZF in Valencia, and architectural lighting from the Italian Linea Light Group.” Some of the hotel’s most striking lighting features originated closer to home. “We also designed and manufactured a 34-metre long bespoke chandelier that replicates a musical note,” added Anthony. “In all, we were responsible for 98% of the hotel’s lighting, from the façade to the architectural and front of house lighting, the bedroom corridors through to bedside and desk lamps that were again designed and manufactured exclusively by Lightsource.”

You’ve got the power
D uring these times of uncertainty brought on by the coronavirus, those in the electrical trade may find not only their business and work being negatively impacted, but also their mental health. The Electrical Industries Charity (EIC) is keen to outline what support it can provide to industry members. We understand this is a complex and difficult time for everyone. We are living in a time of great uncertainty and increasing worry about our health and livelihoods. We understand that the effect of COVID-19 on industry and income will be great and we will all be affected. In times of darkness and insecurity we want to let our Industry members know that we will be here to help you. Like industry, the EIC will be financially burdended by the ramifications of COVID -19, but the welfare team are doing their best to provide both financial and emotional support to those in need. The charity is adapting its support service to help

COVID-19
MYTHS TO IGNORE
I think by now we are all aware that the single most effective way of preventing the spread of the Coronavirus is washing your hands. However, that has not stopped social media from being swamped by fake health advice. Here are just five of the not-so-intelligent suggestions currently doing the rounds: 1 Eating garlic helps to avoid being infected by the coronavirus - NO. Not that garlic isn’t good for you, but the World Health Organisation says there’s no evidence eating it will protect you from Covid-19. You will, however, have no issues with vampires. 2 Drink water every 15-minutes. Again, staying hydrated is good, but you can’t flush the coronavirus out of your system. The only flushing taking place will be you in the bathroom. 3 Don’t eat ice cream or other cold foods as it helps prevent the virus taking hold. NO. 4 Heating your body up is good as it makes it inhospitable for the virus. And again NO. 5 Some Hindu groups in India believe cow urine has medicinal properties, including the ability to ward off the coronavirus if you drink it. Perhaps not surprisingly, the experts disagree.
• Review of individual welfare benefits, your eligibility and support with the application process were necessary. • Food vouchers if in immediate and urgent need. Mental Health Support • Self-isolation is likely to have a negative impact on our mental health and it is important we remain aware of this and try to buffer against it by putting support strategies in place. The EIC can recommend support strategies to help you cope through this time of isolation.
• Signposting to other mental health support services and online services.
Symptoms, hygiene and self-isolation
• The EIC is recommending that individuals with pre-existing health conditions i.e. heart disease, diabetes, those undergoing cancer treatment, and others should self-isolate and managers need to be informed as soon as possible if you care for or reside with a family member or person who is deemed as having pre-existing health conditions. The EIC can provide further guidance to you if you feel unsure as to how to communicate this to your employer.
• Telephone and skype counselling are available to industry members.
For hygiene tips and resources for managing self-isolation, call our confidential helpline
• Psychiatric assessments for complex mental health issues are available to industry members.

DOWDS GROUP PLAYS A VITAL ROLE IN PHASE ONE OF BELFAST CITY COUNCIL’S LEISURE TRANSFORMATION PROGRAMME… DIVINGSTRAIGHT IN
D owds Group was an integral part of the team that completed two state-of-the-art leisure centres in the first phase of Belfast City Council’s ambitious Leisure Transformation Programme. Another sister centre has also recently been completed, shortly after Brook and Lisnasharragh, which Dowds also provided its services to - the Andersonstown Leisure Centre. The Ballymoney-based company was contracted to provide both Mechanical and Electrical services for Lisnasharragh Leisure Centre, formerly the Robinson Centre on the Montgomery Road; and Brook Leisure Centre, on a site close to the former Brook Activity Centre in Twinbrook. Part of a 10-year, £105m investment in Belfast’s leisure services – marking the biggest investment in leisure services in the UK - M&E work on the new sports facilities would
eventually overlap. Dowds supplied full electrical works to both centres, including the main switchboard and all lighting, power and data. Extensive security was also provided, with fire and intruder alarms installed alongside door guard monitoring and CCTV operation throughout all of the centres. Although there is a lot of common ground between the two centres, each was customised to meet different needs and ensure they each had their own unique selling point. The Brook Leisure centre required specialist pitch lighting for its primary focus, which was ‘outdoor leisure provision’ with eight 3G pitches for gaelic and football. Brook also brings swimming facilities to the Colin area for the first time with the addition of a four lane, 25 metre pool that can be transformed into a sensory pool – the first in Belfast. Lisnasharragh had the
role of becoming the leading Aquatic Centre in Belfast, now boasting the city’s biggest swimming pool with eight lanes. The two centres are equipped with multi-purpose health and fitness studios, gyms, sports halls, and community facilities. Dowds was very pleased to be selected for such a prestigious project which will alter the athletic scene in Belfast for years to come.
