Silence is golden for these teams

VANKLEEK HILL| The clip-clop of hooves was the most prominent sound as parade participants exchanged pleasantries with spectators in Vankleek Hill Sunday. “Horse people really like this because it is such a quiet event,” said Phil Arber, describ- ing the main appeal of the annual Horse and Buggy Parade. As the 17 th annual procession demon- strated, the activity has legs. In fact, this year’s activity was the second largest since the first parade was held to mark the vil- lage’s bicentennial in 1997. Some 33 en- tries and 108 participants were featured in the parade that included an assortment of horse-drawn vehicles and a wide range of breeds. “It was just great,” said Arber. “It was fabu- lous. We heard many positive comments. Some of the participants wore costumes; we had carriages dating back to the 1900s. People put a lot of effort into it,” he added. Because of the length of the route, it is almost impossible to estimate how many spectators were in attendance. “Lots” of people took in the event which include a reunion between three long-time friends. Parade Marshall, Gordie Allen, of Vankleek Hill, got a chance to take the reins behind a team he recently sold. The current owner, Keith Evans of Cowansville, Québec, agreed to bring the horses back so that the 88-year-old Allen could drive them once more to open the parade. The event drew horse people from all over the region. One participant travelled from Howick, located in Québec’s Eastern Townships. About 60 per cent of the horses came from Québec.

Equine entries of all sorts trotted through the streets before ending at the fair- grounds where a strawberry social was held.

Gordie Allen was reunited with his team.
