yields abundant evidence of loving and reverent fellowship with the holy, men of past ages, who wrote and spoke as moved by the Holy Spirit. It is especially remarkable that the Lord Jesus in His temptation, in all His teaching, and in the agony of the cross bore constant witness to the unique authority of the Word of God spoken through the Old Testament sainte.—Charles E. Fuller. 28. Not I, But Christ “Not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by. the faith of xthe Son of God, who loved me, and gave him self for me” (Gal. 2:20). “Not I, but Christ.” $ I could not brave the storms that rise; I would but faint with fear Before the anger of the skies. “Not I, but Christ.” ’Tis He, my blessed Lord, who gives me- grace to go With radiant face along the shadow- '| ed way. He loves me. This I know. “Not I, but Christ.” He lives within, and grants me sweet release From care. Come life or death, may He be magnified! This is the secret of my peace. —Lillian M. Weeks. 29. Love “Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins” (1 John 4:10). And now I found, as I thought, that I loved Christ dearly. Oh! methought my soul cleaved unto Him; I felt love to Him as hot as fire; and as Job said, I thought I should die in my rest; but I did quickly find that my great love was but little; and that I, who had, as I thought, such burning love to Jesus Christ, could let Him go again for a very trifle. . —John Bunyan. 30. Utter Obedience; Utter Contentment “I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, they law is within my heart” (Psa. 40:8). The Holy Ghost is given to those who obey God, those prepared to do His will at all costs, with, as was said of Borden of. Yale, “no reserve, no retreat, and no regrets.” This means an utter obedience in every realm of one’s life, leaving the choice of friends and fortune, of health and wealth, of future vocation and present ways of living, entirely in His hands. It means an utter contentment with God’s dealings in our lives. —Hugh A. Evan Hopkins. .

So far as the Christian is concerned, the fear of death is abolished. The closer his fellowship with God, the greater is his confidence of the eternal nature of that fellowship. He is held in a love from which nothing can separate him. . . . The love which guards us, sustains and guides us in this present life, is eternal and will not forsake us at the last. When our life’s work is finished, the love of God will still embrace us and carry us safely into the land of light and love.—Arthur Hedley. 25. Rejoice “Rejoice in the Lord always: and again I say, Rejoice" (Phil.,4:4)-. It is better to rejoice than to be resigned. The word “resigned” is not found in the Bible, but “rejoice” runs through the Scriptures like a great carillon of music. There is danger of self-pity in resignation—and self- pity is a deadly poison. There is no danger that we may be pitying our selves while we are rejoicing “with joy unspeakable. and full of glory.” —The Overcomer. 26. He Commandeth the Winds “What manner of man is this, that even this wind and the sea obey him?” (Mk. 4:41). If I did not see that the Lord keeps watch over the ship, I should long since have abandoned the helm. But I see Him through the storm, strength ening the tackling, h a n d l i n g the yards, spreading the sails—nay, more, commanding the very winds. Let Him govern—let Him carry ,us forward— let Him hasten, or delay—let - Him plunge us even to the bottom of the deep—we will fear nothing.—Zwingli. 27. Authority. of the Word “Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path” (Psa. 119: 105). The Scriptures are mentioned in every verse of Psalm 119 with one exception, and the constant quotation of the Old Testament by our Lord
