Avery Dennison Joins Recycling Consortium

AF&PA Recognizes Sustainability The American Forest & Paper Asso- ciation (AF&PA),Washington, has an- nounced its Better Practices, Better Planet 2020 SustainabilityAward win- ners. According to AF&PA, the award winners all feature exemplary sus- tainability programs and initiatives in the paper and wood products man- ufacturing industry. The association presents its awards based on the mer- it of entries received across multiple categories. Better Practices AF&PA’s Better Practices, Better Planet 2020 Sustainability Initiative was developed nearly a decade ago. The initiative recognizes three pillars of sustainability—economic, environ- ment and social—that collectively support long-term viability, growth and improvement. The following companies received AF&PA’s Better Practices, Better Planet 2020 Sustain- ability Awards: Resolute Forest Products — Lead- ership in Sustainability: Energy Effi- ciency / Greenhouse Gas Reduction

A very Dennison Corporation has joined with other compa- nies in the pressure sensitive label (PSL) industry to form the Circular Economy for Labels (CELAB) consortium. The consor- tium aims to offer solutions and provide education throughout the industry to enable matrix and release liner recycling. Currently only 52 percent of matrix and liner waste is recycled globally. CELAB is catalyzing a unified effort to accelerate ma-

trix and liner recycling industrywide to create greater circularity for la- beling products. Avery Dennison has stated that this aligns with the company’s sus-

tainability commitments to address waste, including 2025 tar- gets to ensure its operations will be 95 percent landfill-free, 75 percent of the company’s waste is repurposed, and that the company helps customers reduce the waste from Avery Denni- son products by 70 percent. “Collaboration is at the heart of our sustainability vision,” said Renae Kezar, Senior Director, Global Leader, Sustainability, Label and Graphic Materials,Avery Dennison. Founding Member Avery Dennison is a founding steering committee member in CELAB,which the company states is part of its strategic commit- ments to circularity — to not only launch products that promote recycling, but to also take responsibility for the waste generated as a result of manufacturing labels, including waste by custom- ers and the end users, or CPGs.

• In Latin America,Avery Dennison Brazil’s Programa Circular collects PET and paper label liners and film label matrix from converters and end-users. The pro- gram is a collaboration with the São Paulo firm Boo- mera, which specializes in repurposing waste material. The paper liner is processed by Polpel, and returns in the form of cellulose pulp for the manufacture of tis- sue paper. Sustainable Innovations Additionally,Avery Dennison’s Brazil team was recog- nized last month by the Label Industry Global Awards for its Programa Circular recycling program -- the third year in a row, and the fourth year overall, that Avery Dennison has won the award for its innovations in sus- tainable labeling products and services. CELAB is guided by four principles: • Develop cost effective solutions and work towards the most environmentally favorable options. • Utilize the value chain to build scale and effectively advance recycling solutions for the label printers and applicators. • Establish an impartial organization to drive progress aligned to legislative and consumer requirements. • Enable, through regional working groups, global oversight for consistency of communications and process.

The company’s work to help form CELAB is part of stepped-up global actions by Avery Dennison to ad- vance circular approaches globally to its matrix and liner recycling through its AD Circular Program. This includes: • The launch in September 2020 of a scalable matrix recycling program in NorthAmerica with RoadRunner Recycling to help label converters achieve their zero waste-to-landfill goals; • A collaboration in Asia Pacific with EcoBlue, a Thai- land-based company that specializes in recycling PET (rPET) label liner for use in other polyester applica- tions, to add PET label liners to its liner recycling pro- gram; and in China,Avery Dennison has launched the PET liner and matrix waste recycling program in part- nership with Lvhuan; • In Europe, Avery Dennison has successfully pilot- ed a liner collection program in selected countries. Among others,we partnered with Romei Replastics to convert waste material from the labeling process into new raw materials. The process includes collecting PET liner from cus- tomers, reshaping into flakes and high-performance compounds, and recycling into new products. We plan to extend the liner collection activities to other coun- tries in the near future; and

Resolute Forest Products was awarded for its modern- ization of Coosa Pines,Alabama, mill that has helped to reduce the company’s carbon footprint. AF&PA says Resolute’s $4 million upgrade to the Co- osa Pines mill’s co-generation turbine resulted in a 65 percent reduction in purchased energy and enabled the mill to self-generate 40 percent of its energy use in 2019 and to increase total energy sourced from renew- able sources, including biomass and hydroelectricity, to 68 percent. Clearwater Paper — Leadership in Sustainability: Safety Clearwater Paper was awarded for its aspects and im- pacts process to identify and reduce serious injuries and fatalities risks. Taking a proactive and systematic approach, Clearwater Paper’s risk-based assessment program resulted in an immediate improvement in specific safety targets and employee engagement; each site met its 20 percent improvement goal within the first year. Evergreen Packaging — Leadership in Sustain- ability: Sustainable Forest Management Evergreen Packaging was awarded for its family for- ests project. Through major investments in regional programs,AF&PA said Evergreen Packaging is reducing barriers and increasing access for small landowners to participate in forest certification programs and ulti- mately increase sustainable forest management prac- tices in the region. Sappi North America — Leadership in Sustain- ability:Water Sappi was awarded for its Somerset mill’s caustic re- claim and reuse project. Sappi North America’s Som- erset Mill designed and installed a system that recov- ers used sodium hydroxide during boiler feed water preparation and repurposes caustic.According toAF&- PA, the process has reduced the use of caustic pur- chases of wood-related products by 660 tons per year, reduced water use by more than 12,000 gallons per day, as well as reduced acid consumption in the waste- water treatment plant by 816 tons per year. WestRock — Innovation in Sustainability WestRock was awarded for its Pak On Demand pouch system. Pak On Demand is a major advance for the paper-based packaging market, enabling companies to produce right-sized, highly sustainable fiber-based pouches, AF&PA states. The pouch system uses auto- mation to increase packing rates by up to five times. In addition, the fiber-based pouches are 100 percent curbside recyclable. AICC Creates Foundation To Sustain Packaging Education by Len Prazych The Board of Directors of AICC, The Independent Packaging Association, announced on November 16 that it has created a new nonprofit charitable founda- tion, the Foundation for Packaging Education (FPE),an educational endowment that will support the devel- opment and distribution of employee education and training resources for the work force in the corrugat- ed, folding carton, rigid box, and related supply chain industries. A charitable organization with an educational mis- sion, the FPE will serve as a complement to AICC’s other educational foundation, the International Corru- gated Packaging Foundation (ICPF), which focuses on bringing talent to the industry from two- and four-year collegiate level programs.AICC and Fibre Box Associa- tion (FBA) will continue to be co-sponsors of the ICPF. The Packaging School, which serves as the platform for AICC’s instructional courses, will continue to be AICC’s most important educational partner. FPE will not be providing curricula, education, translations and learning man agement systems, but will provide the funding for the programs of The Packaging School and AICC seminars and webinars. “It’s been a recurring theme withAICC’s Board of Di- rectors for a few years now and it’s best summed up by the fact that utility demands growth,” said AICC Presi- dent Michael D’Angelo of the need and the timing for the new foundation. “The creation of the Foundation for Packaging Education by AICC members is a ring- ing endorsement of the success that AICC’s education programming, particularly AICC’s Packaging School online, has achieved. Members want to ensure and sustain growth in curricula for industry employees by providing a reliable, enduring financial basis. Thus, the Foundation for Packaging Education was born.” “It really comes down to the sustainability of the AICC’s educational benefit,” said Al Hoodwin, Chair- man of the AICC’s Past Chairman’s Council and one of the board members, who along with Joseph M.Palmeri of Jamestown Container and Jana Harris of Harris Pack- aging and American Carton Company, brought up the concept of a second foundation atAICC’s winter board meeting. The three were also responsible for helping to develop the business plan for the foundation along with D’Angelo,AICC Ambassador SteveYoung, and the entire AICC staff. Hamillroad Software is working with Harper Corpo- ration of America to accredit its XLT anilox range for use with Bellissima DMS. Initial compatibility testing of the XLT 60-degree Hex anilox range with Bellissima DMS has been completed at Clemson University’s Sonoco Institute, and work to- ward full accreditation is in process. Once accreditation is complete, Hamillroad will up- date its customers with details of which aniloxes are supported. In other news, Hamillroad Software has appointed ColoRole, a flexographic platemaker, to take its Bellis- sima DMS screening to market in China from its offices in Qingdao, Shanghai, and Guangzhou. Smurfit Kappa Targets ‘Net Zero’ Emissions By 2050 Smurfit Kappa has announced new targets to further reduce its fossil CO2 emissions, including its ambition to reach at least net zero emissions by 2050. It has also increased its existing intermediate 2030 CO2 reduc- tion target by 15 percentage points to 55 percent, in comparison to the 2005 baseline. The company will have these targets validated by the Science Based Tar- get initiative as being in line with the objectives of the Paris Agreement. Before today’s announcement, Smurfit Kappa had al- ready achieved a reduction in CO2 emission intensity of 32.9 percent on its 2030 target of a 40 percent re- duction. This achievement has resulted from the suc- cessful implementation of key projects that form part of the company’s medium-term strategic plan. One such project was the installation of a recovery boiler at the company’s Nettingsdorf Paper Mill in Austria, which began operating in June of this year. The new boiler is set to cut CO2 emissions by an additional 40,000 tons, which translates into an additional 1.5 per- cent reduction in CO2 emissions across the business.
