Consumers Remain Environmentally Aware

Avery Dennison To Cut Carbon

Avery Dennison announced its am- bition to be net-zero on greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. This commit- ment comes as the company raises the bar on its sustainability goals with new targets for 2030. As part of these new targets, the Label and Graphic Materials (LGM) business commits to 100 percent of its core film and paper product cat- egories globally containing recycled or renewable content. And all of its regions will also have labels that en- able the circularity of plastics. This will ensure that Avery Dennison is well-positioned to satisfy current or future recycling, composting or re- use requirements for single-use con- sumer plastic packaging. The compa- ny is also expanding its portfolio to include more intelligent labeling to advance the communication of data, reduce costs and waste, and create better recycling processes. The specific 2030 targets fall under three broad sustainability goals: deliv- er innovations that advance the cir- cular economy; reduce environmen-

world on its head. Yet, despite the seemingly endless turmoil, consumer commitment to sus- tainability remains unshakable. Sixty-seven percent of consum- ers still report that they are envi- ronmentally aware and that sus- tainability remains paramount in their minds, according to a new report from Trivium Packaging. The report, entitled 2021 Global Buying Green Report: Sustain- able Packaging in a Year of Un- paralleled Disruption , demon- strated that 70 percent of overall consumers expressed a willing- ness to pay more for sustainable packaging, while that number rockets to a stunning 83 percent among younger consumers (44 years old and younger). The study also showed that younger consumers were 23 per-

the midst of the largest destabilizing events in a gen- eration, consumers still did not abandon their belief in the importance of working toward a stronger and healthier environment. More than half of consumers (54 percent) said that sustainability of packaging is a factor in their purchas- ing decision; 52 percent of consumers look for infor- mation on the recyclability or sustainability of the packaging of the product they buy; and 57 percent of consumers are less likely to buy products with packag- ing they believe harmful to the environment. Sadly, the United States lags behind other regions in the world in terms of both appreciating the value of sustainability and the behavior associated with being a good environmental citizen. South American consumers are the most likely to adopt sustainability-oriented values. Seventy-seven percent of South Amer- ican consumers report values associated with sustainability while 58 percent exhibit behaviors. This compares to 50 percent of U.S. consumers exhibited values and just 40 percent demonstrating behaviors associated with sustainability. For Europe, the numbers are 70 percent for values and 57 percent for behaviors, respectively.

not de-prioritize sustainability in the face of the pan- demic, a true testament to the unwavering sustainabil- ity movement led by young consumers,” said Trivium Packaging CEO Michael Mapes. Additionally, 67 percent of those surveyed identified packaging that is recyclable as important, 64 percent identified packaging that contains recycled content as a priority in their buying decisions and, perhaps most surprisingly, fewer than 1 in 3 consumers de-pri- oritized sustainable packaging due to COVID-19. COVID-19 has given food and beverage companies worldwide a crash course in operating during a pan- demic and most expect to be faced with a similar situ- ation again in the future. According to a new study by AIB International, 78 percent of food and beverage executives say they are actively preparing for a future global pandemic, with 30 percent expecting another one within the next four years and 50 percent expecting one within the next decade. “Even after the past year of disruption, almost half of respondents indicated they are still not adequately prepared with a plan for the future. Combined with the fact that 30 percent believe another global pan- demic will occur in next four years –and a full 50 per- cent say within the next 10 years –that lack of pre- paredness is startling,” said Anne Coulter, Managing Director,Research Strategy Group.“Further,62 percent of respondents experienced an increase in operating costs due to the pandemic, while the average increase

• 61 percent of respondents said their company did not have an adequate plan in place to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic when it began. • 62 percent of respondents said they were not “very prepared” to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic. This included 83 percent of respondents from the retail industry, 57 percent of respondents from processing/ manufacturing, and 66 percent from packaging, stor- age and distribution, import/export and other. • Respondents from companies with revenue of less than $250 million felt less prepared than larger compa- nies for the COVID-19 pandemic. • 76 percent of companies with annual revenue of $1 billion or more reported an increase in operating costs, compared to 62 percent of companies overall. • 19 percent of companies realized an increase in op- erating costs and a decrease in revenue, while another 43 percent saw an increase in operating costs and no decline in revenue. • There were two causes of increased operating costs mentioned most often. 75 percent of companies noted that PPE/updated work environments to meet COVID-19 protocols increased their operating costs, while 74 percent noted that sanitation increased their operating costs. • One third of companies saw a decrease in revenue, and among those the average decrease was 27 percent. • Employee absenteeism and canceled/reduced or- ders were the top issues faced by companies due to COVID-19.

Panther Print Sets Flexo Preprint World Record Panther Print GmbH, a Panther Group company headquartered in Wustermark, Germany, used a Bobst 96S central cylinder, CI flexo print- ing press to print more than a million square meters of liner board (preprinted corrugat- ed board) in 24 hours — thus setting a new world record. The Bobst 96S — the newest generation of this machine is called the BOBST MASTER CI 90 SIX — printed 1,174,000 square meters of liner board in one day. That’s an average of 489 meters per minute,or 48,917 square meters an hour, meaning the machine was almost contin- uously running close to its maximum output of 600 meters per minute, including roll and job changes. The machine is the world’s first BOBST 96S with a 2,800 mm printing width. The BOBST 96S installed at Panther Print is equipped with eight inking units on the central cylin- der and a separate varnishing unit. Its automation in the setup process and tool handling, fully automatic print cylinder storage, and automatic splicing at speeds up to 450 meters per minute, reportedly allow for fast job changes.

The machine also features the BOBST smartGPS sys- tem. This offline system for registration and impression setting uses RFID technology and reportedly reduces both machine setup times and waste.

With its BOBST 96S central cylinder flexo printing press, Panther Print GmbH in Wustermark (a divi- sion of the Panther Group) produced more than a million square meters of liner board in 24 hours to set a new world record.

Data already shows that, despite the pandemic, sus- tainable marketed products continue to grow, and that they did so at a rate 7.1 percent faster than products not marketed as sustainable. The Buying Green survey noted an increase in will- ingness to pay more for sustainable packaging in both the United States and South America, though consum- er preference slightly decreased in the overall amount they are willing to pay compared to 2020. For example, in South America the willingness to pay is the highest globally with about 84 percent of consumers willing to pay a premium for eco-friendly packaging.

Students Create Packaging For All Five Senses What makes a packaging concept not only func- tional and visually appealing, but also able to interact with senses when it comes to sound, touch, taste, or smell? That’s the challenge for this year’s design stu- dents in BillerudKorsnäs’ Packaging Impact Design Award, PIDA. This year’s event is the 16th event since the start of the competition back in 2005.This year the competi- tion is expanding geographically by including design schools in the USA in the competition.During May and June, BillerudKorsnäs will host the competition at four events: Sweden, France, Germany, and a joint event for the UK and the United States. In September, an inter- national winner will be selected in a Grand Finale at Luxe Pack Monaco. “Packaging that speaks to our senses is a fast-de- veloping trend. In the future, we can expect packag- ing concepts with sound effects, visual illusions and augmented reality. In an increasingly digital world, the packaging needs to stand out and in the interac- tion with consumers speak to all their senses,” said Anders Gathu, Marketing Manager Cartonboard at BillerudKorsnäs. FPA Develops Roadmaps For Packaging Supply Chain The Flexible Packaging Association (FPA) has an- nounced the development of five roadmaps to assist companies in moving towards a circular economy. • Moving Toward a Circular Economy via Packaging Collection • Moving Toward a Circular Economy via Packaging Design • Moving Toward a Circular Economy via Packaging End Markets • Moving Toward a Circular Economy via Packaging Reprocessing • Moving Toward a Circular Economy via Packaging Sortation Across the packaging value chain, the FPA reported seeing a renewed focus on collecting and recycling packaging materials to foster a circular economy. To close the gaps and move the industry forward with flexible packaging aligned to a circular economy framework, roadmaps are needed to guide key players involved in the packaging supply chain, said the asso- ciation. While not all actions in the roadmaps apply to every company, individual organizations should: • Look for insights, direction, and priorities for their own individual organization; • Identify collaborative relationships to help achieve their goals; • Identify how to work with the FPA to influence future industry opportunities; • Identify technology and investment opportunities; • Understand how their organization plays a critical role in the system of driving flexible packaging to a circular economy; and • Customize the roadmaps for their organization to set strategic goals for 2025 and 2030. FPA partnered with PTIS, LLC and Priority Metrics Group (PMG) on the development of the roadmaps and the recent research report, Flexible Packaging Path to a Circular Economy, that explores the future of sustainability and flexible packaging through 2030. It provides information, knowledge, and insights related to flexible packaging and sustainability, circular econ- omy, legislative trends, impacts to the industry along with key outcomes, and actions to enable the industry to align with circular economy principles where mate- rials are collected, sorted, processed, and turned back into new products or packaging. The roadmaps are designed for FPA members, poli- cymakers, NGOs, consumer product companies, con- sumers, local municipalities, and other associations to advance sustainability and circular economy packag- ing efforts.
