4.2 Downtown Benchmarking The national and regional benchmarking exercise was focused on two main geographies: the City and the downtown. This is because comparative downtown geographies and related Census tract based data are readily available. The national and regional benchmarking exercise aimed to compare growth trends in the City and the downtown with other comparable downtowns. Key findings from the benchmarking exercise are summarized below: • Among the top 35 metro areas nationally, the City of Fort Worth ranks 11 th by population and 22 nd in terms of employment. The City’s downtown, however, ranks significantly lower compared to other downtowns nationally at 34 th for population and 28 th for employment. • Downtown Fort Worth has a relatively low share of the City’s population (0.5% -1% compared to 2%-8% for the national sample). Despite steady population growth since 2010, overall population density in downtown Fort Worth remains lower than national benchmarks (Figure 5).

• Majority of the City’s employment growth has been outside of the City’s downtown, reducing the downtown share of the City’s total jobs (Figure 6).
