few other agencies. Knowing that the coun- ties budget may not require a rate increase, St-Pierre observed, makes it easier to ex- plain to taxpayers who their tax bill works out. “I’m very happy that the counties are in such good shape,” said François St-Amour,

The Nation mayor, adding that when he was the UCPR warden there was a focus on building up the counties’ budget reserves. He also cautioned that one reason why the counties is able to enjoy a“zero budget” situation is because the provincial govern- ment has begun uploading some expenses.

“Whenever you put forward a budget of zero per cent (tax rate), I will never question your ability to deliver,” said Mayor Jean-Paul St-Pierre of Russell Township. St-Pierre noted that the counties prop- erty tax portion represents about half of the total tax bill homeowners and business owners receive in their mail each year. The municipal property tax allocation makes up most of the other half along with those for the school districts, provincial government, South Nation Conservation Authority, and a Robillard-Cardinal, while on patrol in Alfred, intercepted a black 1997 Honda Civic on County Road 17 for expired licence plates. Daniel Brabant, 57, was charged with driving while his blood alcohol level was above the legal limit. Racing on the 417 While on patrol on Highway 417 in North Glengarry Friday, Constable Mario Gratton observed a blue 2013 Mazda M3i traveling at 178 kilometres an hour in a 100 km/h zone. A Hudson Heights individual was charged with racing a motor vehicle. The vehicle was impounded for seven days and the driver’s licence was suspended for a week.

On the night of October 21-22, crooks broke into the Villeneuve Garage, 32 Main Street West, Hawkesbury, stealing a weld- ing machine and two Arctic Claws tires. While officers recovered the welder and returned it to the owner, the tires have not been recovered yet. October 25, a burglary at a Chartrand Av- enue residence in Hawkesbury was report- ed. Sometime that afternoon, crooks broke a window to enter the home and stole a 42-inch Sony television set, a 32-inch TV, a 17-inch Toshiba laptop and a Samsung camcorder. Other personal items were also stolen. The theft is being investigated by Constable Chantal Duchesne. Teens tracked down Two 14-year-old boys were tracked down following an October 23 break-in at the former Hawkesbury Lumber building, at 920 Cartier Boul. When Constables Jean- François Leclerc, Steve Roy and Shawn Mc- Clements arrived on the scene, they found that someone had broken into the empty building by breaking a back window. The responding officers were assisted by Con- stable Gilles Beaulne of the Canine Unit and Emergency Response Team (ERT) members Constables Jonathan Lacelle and Jean- François Meloche.
