William Coates Ltd rose to the challenge of producing an electrical system to meet the needs of the building both today and for the future. Judges commented that undertaking an electrical restoration project on such an old property clearly had many challenges. Its listed status, value to local heritage, time scales and Covid problems all added to what must have been a challenging and complex project. Grand Opera House Chief Executive, Ian Wilson provided a glowing testimonial and commented that the auditorium is “stunning!”

WINNER: Apprentice of theYear

This category always attracts a fantastic calibre of individuals who are highly regarded in their sector, and we were thrilled with the applications we received. We know from previous years that many of the young people who applied will progress significantly within the electrical industry with bright futures ahead of them. However, there can only be one winner. This year’s Apprentice of the Year award, sponsored by Edmundson Electrical, went to Troy McConville from Vaughan Engineering Services Ltd. Troy’s application not only highlighted his passion, interest and commitment to learn, but it also included glowing testimonials from his college, lecturer and employer. The judging panel was moved by comments from his college noting how Troy tremendously overcame personal difficulties, progressing into a well-disciplined and experienced apprentice with a truly bright future ahead of him. One judge noted how they were particularly impressed with his college lecturer’s comments in reference to Troy’s learning difficulties. They said: “Any learning difficulty is a challenge. Dyslexia is particularly challenging for an apprentice electrician when plans, specifications etc need to be looked at constantly. “The glowing testimonials provided, combined with Troy’s personal application, not to mention that he is a UK-ranked underage athlete, warrant first place for us.” Congratulations again to Troy, we wish him every success in the future.
