The 2021 award for Independent Wholesaler of the Year was presented to BM Electrical Ltd. This Coleraine-based firm proved to our judging panel that it really is a business to be proud of. The local independent electrical wholesaler operates successfully within an extremely competitive market competing against all the large corporations. Founded in 1993, BM Electrical set out to rival the national electrical wholesaler networks and provides a local, efficient and personal service to the electrical installation and associated trades. With four separate locations in Northern Ireland and 35 employees, the company celebrated its 25th year in 2018 and has continued to develop and grow throughout its many years of trading. In 2019, BM Electrical acquired the business interests of Fairley & Smyth Electrical Wholesalers Ltd based in the Duncrue Industrial Estate in Belfast. The business is currently operating with a fleet of seven delivery vans and with a diversity of experience, is looking forward to the next 25 years. Crowning them the deserving winner, judges noted how management continue to invest in its staff and provides a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere for both staff and customers.

This year’s Wholesaler of the Year Award was presented to a forward-thinking wholesaler with the biggest branch network in Northern Ireland. City Electrical Factors stood out from other entries as the clear winner in the multinational category. The company places customers as central to its business, assuring them of a superior level of service and attention. CEF commits itself to staff training programmes to improve knowledge and skills, while aiming for excellence in customer service. With nine custom-made stores across the province the company has recently expanded its services through e-commerce to ensure customers remain at the heart of this. Customers are now able to place online orders, and in addition, a mobile trade app can be used to access more than 35,000 products from over 300 leading suppliers. CEF won acclaim from our judging panel for its commitment to carbon neutral, raising £1million for Macmillan and for supporting the next generation of electrical apprentices. Speaking at the virtual awards ceremony, Group Manager of CEF, Tommy Barrett said the team was absolutely delighted to receive the recognition. Tommy explained that the reason for their accomplishment was down to quality staff throughout the store network, supplier relationships and the company’s vision through the last 70 years.
