FIBER INSTALLATION

FIBER INSTALLATION IS BACK: WHAT YOU’LL SEE AND WHAT IT MEANS Fiber optic network installations will continue throughout Chanhassen this spring, summer and fall. We understand this work can feel disruptive and this guide explains what is happening, why it is happening and what residents can expect.

What Does the Process Look Like? Fiber installation follows a consistent sequence: 1. White flags or paint mark the proposed construction path. 2. Utilities mark existing underground lines with colored flags. 3. Construction begins as crews drill, dig or vacuum to locate utilities and install vaults. 4. Initial restoration occurs for lawns, concrete and asphalt. 5. Fiber wires are installed between vaults. 6. Service becomes available. When a customer signs up, a temporary line may be installed and later buried, with restoration completed afterward. Questions or Concerns? If you suspect tree damage, please report it promptly, as tree health is important to the city. Residents may ask questions of crews working nearby and we ask that conversations remain respectful. Residents should first contact the installer listed on the door hanger or construction notice. If you are not receiving a response or need additional assistance, contact the city’s Engineering Department (952) 227-1100 . City field staff will continue supporting residents and installers to help ensure work follows permitted plans. More detailed FAQs, contact information and updates are available on the city website, ChanhassenMN.gov/Fiber

Who Is Installing Fiber?

Fiber installation in Chanhassen is being completed by private internet service providers, not the city. While the city does not build these networks, all work is permitted and reviewed by the Engineering Department, with city staff in the field to help ensure installations follow approved plans and assist residents when issues arise. Comcast has largely completed its citywide installation, with some final restoration continuing this season. Two additional providers are preparing to build in many areas: ITG (building for AT&T) and Metronet (building for T-Mobile). Residents may see multiple providers working in the same corridors because each company builds and maintains its own network. Mediacom and Lumen may also complete targeted upgrades in select locations. Contractors are responsible for restoring affected areas, including repairing property damage, replacing grass and landscaping, fixing sidewalks, curbs or driveways and removing locate flags after work is complete. Early- season activity often includes crews addressing settled ground, reseeding lawns or completing final restoration from prior construction. Where Will Work Occur? Most work occurs near the property line within the public right-of-way and designated drainage and utility easements (see page 8 of this issue to learn more about the public right-of-way). Flags appearing months after construction usually indicate a homeowner has signed up for service and a line is being connected to the home. Restoration requirements still apply.
