CHANHASSEN FIRE DEPT.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF OUR FIREFIGHTERS

An average day for a Chanhassen firefighter is filled with training, emergency responses and teamwork, all while maintaining readiness to protect lives and property.

A typical day for a Chanhassen full-time firefighter starts at 4 p.m. and goes through 4 p.m. the next day. Paid on-call firefighters work from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Often beginning with a shift change at 4 p.m., firefighters check their gear and equipment and have a short briefing, where the outgoing crew shares important information about ongoing situations and equipment status. After this, they will usually have a group dinner to foster camaraderie and prepare for the shift ahead. After dinner, they will do some group training or station chores and then head to bed around 10 p.m.

DAILY RESPONSIBILITIES

After breakfast, firefighters engage in various training exercises and equipment/truck checks. This includes practicing skills such as:

» ladder operations » rescue techniques » using firefighting equipment

EMERGENCY CALLS

Throughout the day, firefighters remain alert for emergency calls. When an alarm sounds, they quickly don their gear and respond to incidents, which can range from structural fires to car crashes and medical emergencies. Upon arrival at the scene, they assess the situation and implement strategies to control the emergency, often working alongside other emergency services.

Firefighters must stay physically fit, as the job demands endurance and strength to handle heavy gear and perform rescues.

AFTERNOON ACTIVITIES

When not responding to emergencies, firefighters may conduct fire safety inspections in the community for residents or businesses, participate in public education events and fire and fall prevention for older adults.

EVENING AND SHIFT END

As the day progresses, firefighters continue their training and prepare for the next shift. They may engage in physical training or review safety protocols. The shift typically ends with a debriefing session, where they discuss the day’s events and prepare for the incoming crew.

They also spend time completing necessary paperwork related to their activities and training.

Being a Chanhassen firefighter is a demanding yet rewarding profession that requires a commitment to public safety, teamwork and continuous training. Chanhassen firefighters play a crucial role in the community, responding to emergencies and working proactively to prevent fires and save lives. Their dedication and bravery make them essential members of society, deserving of respect and admiration.

CHANHASSEN ROAD PROJECTS

YOUR 2026 GUIDE TO ROAD PROJECTS

1 This project has two distinct areas. The first is the Fox Hollow neighborhood, which will undergo a full street reconstruction along with replacement of watermain and storm sewer. The work in this area is expected to take all construction season to complete. The second area is the Vasserman Ridge neighborhood, which will undergo a mill and overlay rehabilitation along with spot repair of curb, sidewalk and pedestrian ramps. The work in this area is expected to take two months to complete. 2026 Street Improvements 2 This Carver County led project will include expanding Highway 5 from two to four lanes, reconstructing existing pavement, upgrading intersections and improving pedestrian access. This project is designed to improve capacity and safety. A full closure is planned in 2027 to accelerate construction. State Highway 5 Improvements 3 This project was originally planned for construction in 2025 but was postponed to 2026. The scope shifted from a full reconstruction with dual roundabouts to a more targeted pavement rehabilitation approach. Planned improvements include widening at the railroad crossing, rehabilitation of street, trail and sidewalk pavements and replacement of the traffic signal at West 78 th Street. Additional work includes pavement along Chan View, watermain improvements, street lighting and landscaping. A key component is the downtown water reuse system serving the Civic Campus and City Center Park ballfields. Market Boulevard Improvements

CITY OF CHANHASSEN | SUMMER 2026

RIGHT OF WAY

PUBLIC RIGHT-OF-WAY: WHAT IT IS AND WHAT IT MEANS FOR YOU You mow it. You edge it. You might even landscape it...but part of what looks like your front yard may not actually be yours. In fact, “public right-of-way”—the strip of land between the street and your yard adjacent to the street—is actually owned by the city for things we all rely on like streets, sidewalks, utilities, drainage and snow storage. And it plays a bigger role than most of us realize. (It’s different than an easement, which usually means you own the land, but the city or a utility has permission to use part of it for a specific purpose, such as a water line or drainage).

Why it matters Setbacks are measured from the right-of-way line, not from the edge of the street. That is why a fence, shed or retaining wall may not be allowed as close to the road as you expect. Visibility also matters. At intersections and driveways, vegetation cannot block sight lines. In general: » Vegetation should not exceed two feet in height in sight areas » Tree branches must provide clearance over streets and sidewalks » Signs and hydrants must remain clearly visible Landscaping You may mow and maintain the boulevard area. Permanent structures, large landscaping features, boulders and walls are generally not allowed in the right- of-way. Private trees may not be planted there. If you install irrigation heads, decorative lighting or other items in the right-of-way, you assume the risk of damage from plows and maintenance equipment. Mailboxes Mailboxes are allowed but must meet city and USPS standards. If a plow directly strikes a mailbox, the city will repair or reimburse up to the standard amount. Before you build or dig Planning a fence, driveway expansion, tree planting or landscaping project near the street? Call first. It is much easier to confirm where the right-of-way line is before starting work than to fix something later.

The bottom line The public right-of-way may feel like part of your yard, but it plays an important role in keeping Chanhassen safe and functional. When in doubt, a quick call to Planning or Engineering (952) 227-1100 can save time and frustration.

COMMON RIGHT-OF-WAY QUESTIONS Can I remove a tree near the street?

Check with the city first. Some trees are within the right-of-way and cannot be removed without approval.

What if I want to dig?

Always call 811 before digging. If your project extends into the right-of-way, a permit may be required.

SUMMER 2026 | CITY OF CHANHASSEN

FIBER INSTALLATION

FIBER INSTALLATION IS BACK: WHAT YOU’LL SEE AND WHAT IT MEANS Fiber optic network installations will continue throughout Chanhassen this spring, summer and fall. We understand this work can feel disruptive and this guide explains what is happening, why it is happening and what residents can expect.

What Does the Process Look Like? Fiber installation follows a consistent sequence: 1. White flags or paint mark the proposed construction path. 2. Utilities mark existing underground lines with colored flags. 3. Construction begins as crews drill, dig or vacuum to locate utilities and install vaults. 4. Initial restoration occurs for lawns, concrete and asphalt. 5. Fiber wires are installed between vaults. 6. Service becomes available. When a customer signs up, a temporary line may be installed and later buried, with restoration completed afterward. Questions or Concerns? If you suspect tree damage, please report it promptly, as tree health is important to the city. Residents may ask questions of crews working nearby and we ask that conversations remain respectful. Residents should first contact the installer listed on the door hanger or construction notice. If you are not receiving a response or need additional assistance, contact the city’s Engineering Department (952) 227-1100 . City field staff will continue supporting residents and installers to help ensure work follows permitted plans. More detailed FAQs, contact information and updates are available on the city website, ChanhassenMN.gov/Fiber

Who Is Installing Fiber?

Fiber installation in Chanhassen is being completed by private internet service providers, not the city. While the city does not build these networks, all work is permitted and reviewed by the Engineering Department, with city staff in the field to help ensure installations follow approved plans and assist residents when issues arise. Comcast has largely completed its citywide installation, with some final restoration continuing this season. Two additional providers are preparing to build in many areas: ITG (building for AT&T) and Metronet (building for T-Mobile). Residents may see multiple providers working in the same corridors because each company builds and maintains its own network. Mediacom and Lumen may also complete targeted upgrades in select locations. Contractors are responsible for restoring affected areas, including repairing property damage, replacing grass and landscaping, fixing sidewalks, curbs or driveways and removing locate flags after work is complete. Early- season activity often includes crews addressing settled ground, reseeding lawns or completing final restoration from prior construction. Where Will Work Occur? Most work occurs near the property line within the public right-of-way and designated drainage and utility easements (see page 8 of this issue to learn more about the public right-of-way). Flags appearing months after construction usually indicate a homeowner has signed up for service and a line is being connected to the home. Restoration requirements still apply.

made to improve functionality and long-term operations while maintaining the vision supported by voters in 2024. Core features remain unchanged, including two ice rinks, a walking track, fitness spaces, indoor playground, field house with gym and turf, dance studio and flexible gathering spaces. Updates include replacing the originally proposed restaurant with an expanded concessions area and larger community room. The project remains aligned with the approximately $80 million budget framework approved by voters. Design work, engineering and construction preparation are now underway, moving the project steadily toward its anticipated 2028 opening. Scan the QR code above to view updated renderings, floor plans and a virtual fly-through tour.

In January, the City Council approved a simplified name for the project. The “Chanhassen Bluffs Community Center” is now officially the Chanhassen Community Center, reflecting resident feedback that requested a clearer, more intuitive name for the city’s main community-owned facility. In February, the City Council unanimously approved the project’s site plan. This milestone confirms how the building will fit on the property, including parking, access, trails, landscaping and safety elements. This allows the project to advance from planning into implementation. As detailed design progresses, refinements have been

NATURAL RESOURCES

As snow melts and temperatures rise, Chanhassen's street sweeping crews head out each spring with an important mission: protecting our lakes and waterways. During the winter season, sand, salt, leaves and debris build up along streets. When spring rains arrive, that material can wash into storm drains, flow through the stormwater system and end up in nearby ponds, creeks and lakes. Street sweeping interrupts that journey by removing debris before it reaches the water, which is why crews begin early to collect winter materials before snowmelt and storms can carry them away. A typical mile of street contains a surprising mix of sand, salt, leaves, dirt, sediment and litter. Removing these materials helps reduce phosphorus and sediment that contribute to algae growth and water quality issues. Chanhassen uses both mechanical and vacuum sweepers on residential streets, main roads and cul-de-sacs throughout the season. Residents can help by keeping nearby storm drains clear of leaves and debris. STREET SWEEPERS Unsung Environmental Heroes

PROTECTING HERITAGE TREES

Trees are one of the defining features of Chanhassen They shade neighborhoods, support wildlife, improve air quality and help shape the natural beauty residents experience every day. To help ensure those benefits continue for generations, the City Council recently adopted a Heritage Tree Ordinance that encourages preservation and requires replacements when preservation is not possible. The ordinance builds on the city’s longstanding commitment to protecting natural resources while planning for growth. Healthy tree cover helps stabilize soil, reduce stormwater runoff, improve air quality and enhance overall quality of life. Preserving mature trees also helps maintain the natural character that makes Chanhassen such a desirable place to live. The ordinance defines “heritage trees” as healthy trees of certain species measuring at least 25 inches in diameter and updates “significant trees” by lowering the threshold from 12 inches to five inches so more trees are identified early in the development process. It also establishes a “critical root zone," which is the area that must remain undisturbed to protect tree health during construction. When heritage trees must be removed, replacement is required. Up to 25 percent of heritage tree removal is allowed during development. If removal exceeds that level, replacement trees must be planted at a one-to-one ratio based on the diameter removed. Preserved heritage trees can count toward replacement requirements, encouraging designs that keep large trees in place. The ordinance reflects a balanced approach, supporting thoughtful development while protecting one of the community’s most valuable natural assets for current and future residents.
