MADDEN Not Just Lucky PHYSICAL THERAPY DISPELLING THE NOTION THAT LUCK DETERMINES SUCCESS

E very March, we don our greenest attire, enjoy a few drinks with friends, and toast to the luck of the Irish. While St. Patrick’s Day feeds into our wildest dreams of capturing a little luck for our future, the reality is that luck has little to do with our successes or failure. You dictate what happens with the actions you take every day. Of course, some things are beyond our control, but how we respond is more important than just letting it happen to us. It takes a lot of work to succeed and create a life for your family. People often see picture-perfect families and entrepreneurs on social media and feel a tinge of jealousy. Why can’t I have luck like that? Sure, some of it might be luck and the lot they were drawn in life, but we don’t see all the hard work that went into building a life like that. We don’t see the nights they didn’t go to bed because they were working on something big. We don’t see the missed holidays or soccer games they gave up so they could have freedom later. We don’t see the birthdays or weekends they worked through, pushing themselves for something better.

and earn a living for her family, despite the hand life had dealt her. It would have been easy for her to fall back on bad luck, blaming the

universe for the end of her marriage and the financial strain this put on her family. But she sacrificed so much

to make a life for us. Watching my parents, and especially my mother, work hard and persist despite the challenges they faced taught me such a valuable lesson as a kid. Today, I work hard because I want to pay off my student loans and create a great future for my family and myself. I know that if I work hard now, put in many hours, and make the sacrifices today, then I’ll be better off tomorrow. Sometimes it’s hard to see the big picture when you’re inundated in the daily grind, but it’s always powerful to look back and see how far we’ve come. I try to teach those lessons to my patients, too. As a patient, it may be hard for you to imagine life doesn’t involve a wee bit o’ luck. It’s easy to get lost in the mentality that you sustained bad luck and that’s why you’re injured or in pain. But you also have to remember how far you have come! Asking for help and seeking treatment from physical therapy are great first steps. After a few months, you may be more mobile than you were just weeks ago. You can overcome a lot just by starting.

Whenever I think of luck, I’m motivated by my parents.

My brothers and I grew up in a broken home. Our mother essentially raised us on her own. We would watch our mom get up every day, commute to work,

You have the power to determine your luck, and it isn’t always easy. But it will always be worth it. You don’t need good luck. We’re here to help.

The Power of Pretend

Imaginary Friends Promote Real Life Skills Studies show that up to 50% of young children have imaginary companions, ranging from entirely conjured entities to beloved stuffed animals. The popular social stigma around imaginary friends is that these children must be shy or lonely, but psychologists disagree. In fact, if your child develops an imaginary friend, most psychologists say it’s an activity you should promote instead of discourage. Psychologists claim that the invention of an entire friendly persona points to the fact that the child is both creative and highly social. Imaginary scenarios also give kids an opportunity to indulge in their wildest aspirations, like going to the moon or inventing a time machine. Their creativity gives them the ability to dream, explore, and experiment in useful ways. Imaginary friends can also be there to comfort your child when they’re feeling down or experiencing a tantrum, which is helpful when they are learning how to manage their emotions. There are also many ways parents can take part in interactions with imaginary friends to strengthen their own relationship with their child. Imaginary friends can make interactive play more meaningful and can be useful in accomplishing daily routines, like cleaning up or getting ready for bed. They also provide a window into the way your

child’s mind works by encouraging the vocalization of thoughts and feelings they may not otherwise share. Imaginary friends are often a proxy for the children who invent them, so the conversations your child has with or about their friend can provide a lot of insight into how your child views the world and themselves. Imaginary friends are so important to how some children learn and grow that they’ve been featured in pop culture for many years. Entertainment like “Calvin and Hobbes,” “Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends,” and even adult shows like “Supernatural” — which featured an episode about a main character’s childhood imaginary friend returning to teach him valuable lessons as an adult — portray the inventors of imaginary friends as outgoing and creative. It just goes to show that letting the imagination run wild not only encourages healthy development but can also lead to lots of fun.

Back to walking! “When I began with Madden, I could not walk without a walker and could not lift my right leg myself. I could not do any house chores or make any meals. Now, through therapy and home exercises, I can do all my own cooking and house chores. I am walking by myself without any assistance. “The experience I have had here was very pleasant. The staff are very pleasant and accommodating, and they’re fun to be around. Dr. Danny Willey was great and always answered all of my questions. I will continue to recommend this place of therapy.” –Betty G.

Injuries and pain can be debilitating, and the road to recovery can be long and tough. But with help from your physical therapist, you can hit the trails with your friends and the park with your grandkids without thinking twice.

But is your mental health being treated, too?

As you heal from an injury, you’re faced with many psychological roadblocks. There’s the initial injury and overcoming the pain and shock. There’s the first real test your physical therapist makes you do. There’s the plateau you reach and have to overcome as you work through your treatment. As you overcome each one, your confidence will start to come back, and you’ll feel encouraged. But what happens when it gets tough? What if you are limited in what you can do until you heal? Are you comfortable asking others for help, or will you feel like a burden? What if you can’t garden or work on your car? Do you have outlets to tide you over until you can do so again? Psychology and physical medicine have been linked for some time. In addition, chronic pain and emotional wellness share a strong connection, so it’s imperative that you nurture your
