La Cité rouvrira le site d’enfouissement du chemin Lalonde à Bourget le 5 mai. Cela comprend également l’accès au dépôt de recyclage pour l’élimination des métaux recyclables, l’entreposage sécuritaire de certains types de déchets ménagers dange- reux, la disposition des pneus usagés aux fins d’élimination ou de recyclage, et aussi la disposition de gazon et de rognures de jardin pour le compostage. Le dépotoir rouvrira à 8h30 le mardi 5 mai. La Cité a mis en place un horaire spécifique d’accès public pour la période du 5 au 16 mai. Le dépotoir sera ouvert le 7 mai de 8h30 à 15h30, le vendredi 8 mai de 8h30 à 17h, et le samedi 9 mai de 8h30 à 16h. L’horaire de la mi-mai est de 8h30 à 15h30 les 12 et 14 mai, de 8h30 à 17h le 15 mai, et le samedi 16 mai de 8h30 à 16h. Après le weekend du 16 mai, des horaires d’été

Les municipalités de Hawkesbury, de Casselman et de Clarence Rockland ont décidé d’annuler les festivités de la fête du Canada. Les célébrations organisées dans plusieurs municipalités depuis des années à l’occasion de cette fête annuelle seront-elles aussi victimes de la pandémie. Le vendredi (1 er mai), la Ville de Hawkesbury a annoncé le report des célébrations annuelles, qui devaient se tenir le mardi 30 juin et le mercredi 1 er juillet 2020. La Ville a indiqué, par le biais d’un communiqué, que cette décision a été prise en tenant compte des directives de la santé publique éta- blies pour la pandémie de la COVID-19. La Ville a expliqué que l’ordre provin- cial d’interdiction des rassemblements de plus de cinq personnes rend l’orga- nisation de cet évènement impossible. Cependant, elle étudie actuellement d’autres options pour célébrer le jour du Canada, sans préciser quelles seront ces options. D’autre part, la Cité de Clarence- Rockland a été la première municipa- lité de Prescott-Russell à annuler les célébrations de la fête nationale. Elle a été suivie de Casselman qui en a fait l’annonce le mardi dernier (28 avril) via sa page Facebook. Au moment de mettre sous presse, les autres municipalités de la région ne s’étaient pas encore prononcées sur le maintien ou l’annulation des célébrations entourant cette fête.

Un nombre limité de véhicules sera autorisé sur les lieux en même temps. On demande à chacun d’être patient et d’attendre dans son véhicule son tour pour aller sur le site déposer ses ordures.

Clarence-Rockland homeowners doing spring cleanup for their yards have a place again for their grass clippings. The municipal garbage transfer station on Industriel Street in Rockland reopened Saturday, May 2. The site is accepting yard waste only. That includes grass and hedge clippings, garden waste like weeds, and leaves and small branches. Grass clippings and leaves must be packed inside paper sacks, not plastic bags. Branches for drop-off cannot be longer than four feet with a maximum diameter of four inches. Residents bringing in yard waste for
drop-off must present their driver’s licence to the station attendant for proof of residence. They are urged to remain in the vehicle when doing so. They should only exit the vehicle only to deposit yard waste. A limited number of vehicles will be
allowed on the site at the same time in order to comply with social distancing rules under the provincial pandemic protection plan. The transfer station will be open to the public on Wednesdays from 3 to 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

of jumps in the total number of cases is the result of recent outbreaks in long-term facilities within the Five Counties area. As of May 4 the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases for the EOHU’s jurisdiction is 101, and that figure includes 20 cases resulting from outbreaks in three group care facilities, along with two fatalities. The CV19 status summary on the EOHU website noted 54 cases resolved, which means that more than half of the individuals who were infected have recovered. The EOHU website noted that the Pinecrest Nursing Home in Plantagenet and the Woodland Villa long-term care facility west of Cornwall have confirmed outbreaks. The first confirmed deaths due to COVID-19 have occurred in Plantagenet. Another outbreak was recorded for Milieux de vie à l’Érablière, a Valoris group home in Plantagenet but is now classed as resolved.
Some of the provincial government’s pandemic control restrictions over businesses are starting to relax, but Eastern Ontario’s regional health of- ficer urges residents in this area not to stop practising social distancing just yet. “We’re at the point where people are anxious and want to get outside,” said Dr. Paul Roumeliotis, chief medical officer for the Eastern Ontario Health Unit (EOHU). “Just be a bit more patient.” Dr. Roumeliotis noted, during his regular media teleconferences on the COVID-19 situation in Eastern Ontario, that the overall number of COVID-19 cases resulting from “community transmission” has remained stable for the most part. EN BREF • BRIEFS BURN PERMIT SUSPENSION Alfred-Plantagenet Township has suspended approval of new burn permits for the duration of the pandemic situation. Residents who want to have a campfire for backyard barbecue purposes are still allowed but only dry wood fuel is allowed and the campfire must not be larger than one cubic metre, including the height of the flames. Open fires for spring yard work cleanup are not allowed. – Gregg Chamberlain TREES FOR FREE The South Nation Conservation Authority (SNC) is preparing its annual Community Free Tree Days program for 2020. The SNC is contacting all municipal govern- ments, within the watershed region, to arrange for host places and days in May. The first deaths due to COVID-19 are confirmed for the Prescott-Russell region. Two residents at the Pinecrest Nursing Home in Plantagenet have died as a result of complications related to COVID-19. The Eastern Ontario Health Unit (EOHU) confir- med the deaths in an email news release sent out to local media. “I am saddened by the news,” said Dr. Paul Roumeliotis, EOHU chief medical officer. “On behalf of the Board of Health and all EOHU staff, I am offering our condolences to the family and friends of the deceased residents.” A woman in her 70s and a man in his 80s died at the local nursing home over the first weekend of May. They died of complications from the disease on May 3. The nursing home is dealing with a COVID-19 outbreak which affected eight residents and three staff members. The EOHU is doing priority testing of all 17 long-term care facilities within its jurisdiction and will also focus on priority testing of 35 seniors retirement centres along with other group home lodging operations within both the Five Counties region and the City of Cornwall. The EOHU is also focusing its attention on assessment testing for all the emergency daycares that the provincial government has

La genèse du projet vient d’une conversa- tion entre les quatre acolytes. Ces derniers ont constaté que de telles initiatives étaient élaborées à Ottawa, mais que la région de Prescott-Russell demeurait orpheline de projets communautaires de la sorte. Les quatre étudiants ont décidé de changer cette réalité en proposant le projet Sac-Bien-Rempli Prescott-Russell , qui fait relève d’une initiative lancée en Alberta. Le but de projet est de promouvoir la santé communautaire et aider à protéger les populations vulnérables au sein de la communauté de Prescott-Russell durant ces temps incertains. «On a tous des grands-parents et des personnes vulnérables dans nos familles. C’est certain que notre initiative découle d’un vécu personnel aussi», a lancé Valérie Lavigne. En effet, la jeune étudiante en médecine, originaire de Limoges, a expliqué que le projet repose sur deux services. Le premier est la récupération et la livraison des com- mandes en ligne des épiceries. Le deuxième

Ils s’appellent Olivia Dupuis, Valérie Lavigne, Benjamin Raymond et Niève Séguin. Ces jeunes personnes originaires de Cas- selman et de Limoges viennent de lancer un service de livraison d’épiceries gratuit pour les personnes vulnérables. L’objectif de cette initiative est de combler l’écart d’accessibilité pendant la pandémie de COVID-19. Cette initiative citoyenne permettra d’aider une partie de la population isolée en cette période de pandémie. «Ce service est destiné aux personnes malades, âgées, auto-isolées et immunodéprimées n’ayant pas la capacité de sortir faire l’épicerie», a expliqué Valérie Lavigne, la coordonnatrice du projet.

service est l’achat des épiceries. Ces services ainsi que les livraisons sont assurés par une trentaine de bénévoles situés dans presque toute la région de Prescott-Russell. Valérie Lavigne assure que l’objectif est de pouvoir livrer les commandes dans les 48 heures après la réception du formulaire. Les services sont entièrement gratuits. Depuis mercredi dernier, le groupe a entamé une campagne de promotion à l’échelle locale pour faire connaitre son initiative. Bien que le jeune groupe n’avait
reçu aucune commande depuis le lancement de l’initiative (le 29 avril), le projet a tout de même reçu 1000 $ grâce à la plateforme de financement participatif «Gofundme». «On est en première année de méde- cine et on voulait apporter notre aide sur le terrain, mais ce n’est pas possible. Cette initiative est une autre manière d’aider. Aujourd’hui on veut que notre message arrive à tous pour qu’on puisse aider le plus grand nombre de personnes dans le besoin», a conclu Valérie Lavigne.

When they were done with the dirty job, they refused Anthony’s offer of payment, insisting that he give the money to the Embrun Food Bank to help support its operation during the COVID-19 situation. Anthony agreed, and matched the money he was going to pay the four lads, making a total of $500 to the Bons Voisins/Good Neighbours Food Bank. “Their future looks bright,” Anthony said, regarding the generosity of the four young men.
Four Russell teens got down and dirty to help out the food bank. Doug Anthony needed some help moving 10 yards of topsoil as part of a backyard renovation project. He asked a few local youths if they wanted to earn some money. They did, but not for themselves. “It is heartwarming and inspiring to see such generous and considerate young men like these four,” Anthony said. The dirt that Anthony wanted moved was under a large deck and not easy to access.
