The future of arcades on wheels

FRANCIS RACINE francis.racine@eap.on.ca

CORNWALL | Mike Pliss’ 24-foot-long trail- er is something of a wonder in Cornwall. Although it sports an extremely well-de- tailed paint job, some might dismiss it as a simple car hauler. But one step inside reveals what has taken the modern world by storm and what Pliss describes as the future of arcades . “It’s simple,” explained Pliss. “We come to you. We service everything from festivals, birthday parties, fairs, school functions, tournaments, camp functions and bar mitz- vahs.” So what exactly is Mobile Gamerz? It is four 51-inch televisions, each with their own sound system, a big 100-inch screen and of course, countless lasers. And to make everything even more surreal, there’s also a sound system located inside the seats. “In all, we have 20 paddles,” outlined Pliss. “We can therefore accommodate a lot of people. It really comes in handy when we’re doing tournaments.” The trailer boasts a wide array of consoles, such as the Microsoft Xbox 360, the Sony PS3 and the Nintendo Wii. All are also con- nected to the same network, making the tournaments extremely popular. “Sometimes the competition gets really intense in here,” added the businessman. “You can feel it. We get groups of friends who really want to win. We also offer cash

prizes, which sweetens the deal.” Over 65 games welcome participants, ranging from racing to first person shoot- ers. Not satisfied with providing his fans with a D.J service, Bliss also came up with the idea to project the screen.“If we open the back door, we can project any footage,” he explained. “That way, we can make the screen even bigger.” Even though he loves video games, Bliss admits that he hasn’t had the time to pick

up a paddle in a long time. “Ever since we started, about three years ago, I haven’t had any time to play.” But it’s a sacrifice the local businessman is willing to make. When he established Mo- bile Gamerz, it was only the fifth business of its kind in North America.“It’s very popu- lar. When I drive around town, I actually see kids running after the trailer, wanting me to stop,” he said, chuckling. Although he attended Lift-Off and other local festivals, Pliss said that he services Montreal a lot. “I’m there often. They really like us over there,” he said. “I also service the

area between Cornwall and Ottawa.” Parents of children enjoy Mobile Gamerz too! “When we do birthdays, the kids are entertained, so the parents can do their own thing.” Although it’s become quite popular in the city and surrounding areas, Pliss still be- lieves in giving back to the community. “We work with several different local charities and organizations,” he highlighted. “Every year we do work with Children’s Aid (CAS), The Boys And Girls Club and The Cancer Foundation. We’re actually going to be at the Purple Ribbon campaign for CAS.”
