INTRODUCTION

Dear Leaders at Island Shangri-La, Hong Kong

I hope you are well and greetings from Dubai.

As you already know, on Monday 21 st and Tuesday 22 nd we will be gathering to complete an important exercise for your hotel:

1. We will be creating a Strategic Plan that will allow the entire team to focus on the future of your property by clearly outlining what will success look like in the next three years.

2. We will be exploring your leadership personas by focusing on traits and attributes that will give you insights on your current team dynamics; but also how to use everyone’s strengths.

These two days together are not just a workshop. These two days will be a significant milestone for your hotel to anticipate the desired results that you want to achieve collectively.

The purpose of this document is to provide you with information regarding the pre-work activities that you will need to complete in preparation for the two days.

PRE-WORK No. 1: SWOT ANALYSIS

A key concept of Strategic Planning is to understand what is the current reality of your hotel performance highlighting Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats.

As such, please follow the instructions below for the pre-work No. 1.

1. Individually, you will need to complete a SWOT analysis for your entire hotel. Please do not focus just in your department but rather in the entire business. 2. In a SWOT analysis, Strengths represent advantages that you currently have in comparison to other businesses / markets. Weaknesses represent disadvantages in comparison to other businesses. These are things that affect us negatively. Opportunities are items that represent a potential gain in the future. Threats are external factors that we cannot control that have the capacity to impact the performance of the business negatively. 3. Using the template included in the e-mail, please conduct the SWOT analysis and bring it to the workshop.

PRE-WORK No. 2: MB ASSESSMENT

An important aspect of effective leadership is to take some time to learn about our individual traits as people and to recognise how these traits have an effect in the way we lead.

Traits can be understood as characteristics in our personality. They manifest in different situations and sometimes they can be a great source for effective leadership but also at times they can have a less positive effect. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator assessment measures certain personality traits allowing leaders to develop higher self awareness about how their personality relates to their leadership persona. 1. Using the Excel File attached in the e-mail called MB Assessment, please answer all the questions in the first tab. 2. Once you finish, you will see that the second tab will produce 4 letters with a brief description on your profile. Please print that second page only (the results page) and bring it to the workshop. 3. Please answer the questions thinking of you in the now. Do not answer the questions thinking as “you would like to be in the future” but rather as you are (your current behaviours). 4. It is highly advisable that you do this task in a quiet place, do not overthink your answers just select the option that better describes your current behaviour. Please follow the instructions:

PRE-WORK No. 3: WHAT IS LUXURY?

As Island Shangri-La, Hong Kong is recognised as one of our most luxurious hotels in the network, we will be having some conversations about Luxury as well. There are multiple perceptions on “What is Luxury?” however very few people have actually taken the time to explore Luxury in a more systematic way. In the current world, we know Luxury is changing fast. The emphasis on the experience rather than the object also poses a challenge to businesses that cannot innovate.

The BBC Network created a series of documentaries featuring Luxury Hotels in the World.

As part of your pre-work, you will need to download and watch an episode related to the Giraffe Manor Hotel in Kenya, and please note anything that you found interesting in the episode.

OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

Please consider the following information regarding the meeting:

Dates: Monday Oct 21 st and Tuesday Oct 22 nd Duration: 9:00am to 5:00pm each day. Dress code: Casual . (No suits, or formal attires or uniforms allowed). Please dress very casually (example, jeans and a t-shirt).

Please bring your three prework activities completed. Please bring your mobile phone fully charged.
