Partick has a long history dating back to the Roman era, when it was a strategic crossing point on the River Clyde, later becoming an important royal centre for the Kings of Strathclyde during the dark ages. In the centuries that followed, the area developed into an important commercial hub, with shipbuilding and textiles playing a major role in the local economy. Partick became a burgh in 1852, evolving from a rural village to an industrial town.
