deal with all issues and prevent recur- rence.” But, the CFIA statement noted, the lat- est agency inspection along within in- formation the company provided Sept. 26 indicated all the problems were not yet corrected. That includes failure to provide an acceptable plan to deal with long-term issues of meat quality and health safety. The company did launch a voluntary recall in late August of some of its meat products when the first reports of sus- pected E. coli contamination came out of Edmonton after several people became sick after eating Kirkland brand strip loin steaks bought at a local Costco outlet. The recall expanded by the Labour Day weekend in September to all XL Foods meat products, which were shipped to various grocery store chains and inde- pendent outlets across Canada and some in the United States. In Ontario the recall affects stores in the CO-OP, Foodland, Kirkland Signa- ture, Metro, Northern, Safeways, Sobeys, Sobeys/Foodland, and Sobeys/IGA chain. In Québec the recall affects stores be- longing to the Entrepôt de Viandes, Kirk-
land Signature, Metro, Presto and Club Entrepôt, and the Super C chains. More information, including a com-
plete list of all the name brand and other meat products included in the recall, is at the CFIA website at www.inspection.gc.ca.

An Alberta-based company has had its operations licence lifted because some of the meat it has shipped out across the country may contain E. coli bacteria. Plant op- erations will not re-start until CFIA’s or- ders for changes in the handling of meat at the plant, including measures to pre- vent contamination, are put in place. “The company took initial steps to en- sure the safety of food being produced,” stated a CFIA news release, “and, at the time, committed to additional steps to
