Alicante provides the perfect start to summer With a sun that almost never takes a break and a sea that changes all shades of blue, this city has the energy of a Mediterranean holiday while maintaining a serious urban rhythm T his city is often left in the shadow of Barcelona, Ma- drid or Valencia, but that’s actually its greatest ad- vantage. Alicante is a city that still has a local pulse. People don’t rush around for no reason here, coffee is sipped slowly, lunch seriously lasts and the evenings only arrive when the sun sets behind the port and the castle that dominates the city.
The sun really does play an impor- tant role here. Alicante enjoys more than 300 sunny days a year, which is why it often ranks among the European cities with the best climate. Early June already looks like high summer here – with the temperatures ideal for swim- ming, but free of the extreme heat that can bake Spain later in the season. And that’s precisely why early June is per- haps the perfect time to get acquainted
with this city.
The heart of Alicante isn’t only rep- resented by its coastline, but also by the impressive Santa Barbara Castle, a ma- jor fortification that stands on Mount Benacantil and offers views over the en- tire bay.
