SOLUTIONS

The documentary was accompanied by one of the most ambitious outreach and engagement campaigns in TPT’s history. Funded by CPB, TPT provided grants of up to $20,000 to 10 stations across the country, allowing them to create local engagement and produce locally focused programs on topics as varied as suicide among older populations, farmers, and the incarcerated. Broadcast, streaming, and outreach messages from the initiative were seen over 2 million times. TPT also produced Facing Suicide: Let’s Talk , a four- episode companion YouTube series, creating a space of understanding, hope, and action for young people whose lives have been impacted by suicide.

National Award Winner

In March 2023, Facing Suicide received the Christopher Award, which celebrates writers, producers, directors, authors, and illustrators whose work “affirms the highest values of the human spirit.”

Jim Crow of the North Stories

In 2019, Jim Crow of the North premiered, a documentary chronicling the lasting impacts of Minneapolis’s history of racially restrictive housing covenants. Later that year, the Minnesota legislature passed a law allowing homeowners to denounce racial covenants on their property deeds. In 2023, Jim Crow of the North Stories premiered, a docuseries following up on the award-winning film. This series examines race, place, and the past by detailing the legacy of these covenants and showcasing the people and organizations taking action to make change and repair the damage of systemic racism. I can’t believe how well you took these HUGE histories and complex projects and broke them down into such accessible segments. The stories throughout made me weep. You know so intuitively and profoundly how to blend the deeply personal with the hugely political. Masterful storytelling.

The four-episode digital series was the basis for three community conversations across the Twin Cities metro area led by Mapping Prejudice and Just Deeds – organizations whose work were part of the inspiration behind TPT’s film and series.

Watch Facing Suicide and Facing Suicide: Let’s Talk at tpt.org/facing-suicide .

In September 2022, Facing Suicide had its national broadcast premiere on PBS. The 90-minute film combines personal stories with science to understand why people attempt suicide and what can be done to prevent it. Facing Suicide Facing Suicide takes a much needed and long overdue step toward fostering the very necessary public understanding about what suicide is and how to prevent it, and at the same time giving people touched by crisis or bereaved by suicide their voice. That is critical to implementing the practices and systems that will ultimately stem its tragically rising tide. That is a tremendous public service. – DR. THOMAS JOINER, PREEMINENT SUICIDOLOGIST

Engagement efforts equipped audiences with the knowledge and skills to take action to address suicide: • 92% of people who attended events reported a greater understanding of suicide. • 90% were more comfortable talking about suicide and seeking help. • 90% had a better understanding of how to take action when someone close to them is at risk, and 85% were more confident in their ability to do so. • 88% learned about suicide prevention resources in their communities. • 96% planned to continue talking to others close to them about suicide and mental health.

Stories With Impact

A companion email series featured Jim Crow of the North Stories and highlighted TPT content about housing disparities in the Twin Cities. The email series engaged more than 4,000 subscribers. By sharing important history and providing resources to take action, Stories with Impact helps Minnesotans better understand what can be done in the present to ensure a more equitable future. Watch Jim Crow of the North Stories , explore more TPT content, and subscribe to the Stories with Impact email series at tpt.org/jcon.

Hype has given me opportunities I wouldn’t usually be exposed to in my day-to- day life. It’s given me a sense of clarity in who I am and what I’m fully capable of. – HYPE CREW MEMBER To meet the needs of Minnesota’s educators, TPT Learn also produced standards-based activities and resources that align with TPT-produced content, including Jim Crow of the North , Bring Her Home , STAGE , and more.
