We will elect 4 Governors from those Resident Members who are on Active Duty or Selected Reserve Resident status. We will elect 11 Governors from those Resident Members who are in the All Others status. We will ensure that nomination forms are available in the Administration Office and on the Club’s website no later than Monday, 1 June 2020. To ensure the publication of the nomination in the Annual Meeting Packet, we must receive the nomination no later than Wednesday, 1 July 2020. We will permit nominations from the floor at the Annual Meeting, but please advise me of any such notifications prior to the meeting so I can ensure the floor nomination is of a qualified Resident Member. The use of military rank for nomination and election purposes is permissible under Title 10 of the US Code. For example, an Active Duty army officer may identify herself in the form of “CPT Jane Doe, USA,” and a retired army officer may identify herself as “CPT Jane Doe, USA (Ret.). Former military officers may not use their former rank as a preface, but may use their highest wartime rank as follows: Ms. Jane Doe (CPT, USA). I strongly encourage those who are interested in serving on the Board of Governors to familiarize themselves with our By-Laws, Club Rules, and Organization Manual. I am available to answer any questions you might have about this process at arthurwhite501@comcast.net or by phone at (571) 432-7261.

Impact Tire Drill Tim Ritter, Assistant Golf Professional Click on the image to the left to watch Tim Ritter, Assistant Golf Professional at Arlington, teach you a drill you can do at home with your car. Using a towel, the tire of your car, and for best results - a 7 iron, this drill is great practice to set up your golf shot, rotate in a full body motion and generate power in your swing!
Chipping Drill with a Towel Nancy Harvey, LPGA Director of Player Development Here’s an easy chipping drill to help with low point control. Place a folded towel about the width of your foot directly behind the ball. Set-up with the ball just inside your back foot and your weight towards your front foot. We want to avoid attacking the ball too steeply and move the low point of the swing to the correct position which is right after you make contact with the ball. Notice in the video I am able to keep the club shallow but miss the towel because the low point is in the correct position. If your low point is to early you will hit the towel. Hitting the towel can be associated with “center of pressure issues” – how is your weight distributed. Either your center of pressure is not starting on your lead side (front foot) enough at set-up, or it is shifting backwards (towards your back foot) during the swing. Our goal is to keep our weight forward, the clubhead low and brush the ground after contact with the ball. This drill should help you to more consistently get the ball rolling on the green and increase your chances of chip-ins!!

A JOKE, A QUOTE AND A TIP
The Joke… What’s the difference between a golfer and a fisherman? - When a golfer tells a lie he doesn’t have to bring anything home to prove it. The Quote… “The more I practice, the luckier I get.” - Gary Player The Tip… Lots of golfers struggle to get out of greenside bunkers. I don’t mean they struggle getting onto the green or near the hole. I’m talking about simply getting OUT of the bunker and back onto grass.
If that’s you, here’s a tip to help change the way you maybe think about bunker shots that might just help the way you approach them. And that might make a difference in the outcome. It’s not about the ball. That’s it. That’s the tip. Short. Simple. Easy. It’s not about the ball. Getting out of a greenside bunker has nothing to do with the ball – at least not so far as how you should think or execute the shot. The golfer’s job here is to knock some sand out of the bunker – specifically the sand that’s located underneath and just around the ball. If the sand comes out, the ball comes out with it. Every time. Here’s an illustration to prove the point. Stand in the middle of a greenside bun- ker. Fill your hand with sand and put a ball on top of the sand that’s in your hand – but not so that the ball actually touches any part of your hand or arm. Now toss the sand. Where did the ball go? I’ll bet it went almost exactly where the sand went. If the sand landed back in the bunker, the ball landed in the bunker. If the sand landed on the slope just outside the bunker, the ball landed on the same slope. But if the sand landed well outside the bunker –
GOLF
maybe even on the edge of the green – there’s a pretty good chance the ball did the same. So, here’s the explanation. And there are really two parts to making this simple philosophy work. First, you need to be able to strike the sand – that is, make first contact or enter the sand with the club – at or very near a specific point that you determine. And second, make a ‘big’ enough swing to actually make the sand you hit land outside the bunker. Now, here’s a guide for how to practice. Start by drawing a straight line in the sand with you club, say five of six feet long. I recommend you start in a fairly level part of the bunker to get started. You can move to explore more compli- cated lies as you improve. With sand wedge in hand, straddle the line and set up with your club hovered just above the line. Your job now is to make a swing and have the club strike directly on the line. Not behind it or past it – directly on the line. Instant feedback! How did it go? So, move up six inches and do it again. OK, move forward an- other six inches and do it again. Repeat. Repeat again. Keep repeating till you run out of line. With a five-foot line
you ought to get at least 10 attempts before you stop, rake up your damage. Now do it again. Once you can first strike the sand in the spot you choose, you’re well on your way. But that’s only half the battle. Once you find yourself hitting your spot (the line), begin to notice where the sand you’ve just hit lands. My bet is its just moving a few inches or a few feet – but likely its not landing outside the bun- ker. So you’ve got to swing ‘bigger’. In this context, ‘bigger’ might be referring to the size or your swing. Or it might speak more to the effort you put into the motion. Or maybe it’s a bit of both. I find that most folks who struggle to get out of the sand tend to make little bitty ‘scared’ swings. That won’t work at all here. Give yourself plenty of motion. Let you weight shift and accelerate like you’re hitting a full shot. Try to end up in a full swing finish position. And hold the pose till the sand – and the ball – land outside the bunker. Now think of the earlier illustration. Where the sand goes, so goes the ball. But wait. We haven’t introduced the ball yet! Let’s do that now.
Since you’ve practiced enough times to strike the sand in the right spot and are making a ‘big’ enough swing to move the sand you hit well outside the bunker, it’s time for the ball. Set up the line drill again. But this time add a ball approximately 2”-3” beyond the line. This should be pretty much directly un- der the center of the sand you’ve been knocking out of the bunker during your practice swings. Now, remember the tip and forget about the ball. Do the drill like the ball isn’t even there. Strike the line (direct- ly behind the ball, please) with a big enough swing to make the sand fly out of the bunker. If you manage to do that – forget about the ball and move the sand out of the bunker – I’ll bet the ball gets out of the bunker too. And it won’t be some half-bladed, over-the- green sort of thing. It will be a relatively soft-landing affair that you can be proud of and say, “I meant to do that!” Now, if you can remember what Gary Player said about practice! See you around the course,
Greg Scott, PGA Director of Golf

The first White House Putting Green was installed by President Dwight Eisenhower in 1954 with help from the United States Golf Association and private donations. Eisenhower was a very avid golfer and was sometimes criticized for it, but he and his doctor readily defended the habit as good for his health, which had suffered during his presidency.
