OCTOBER 1 Looking unto Jesus "Mine eyes are unto thee, O God the Lord” (Psa. 141:8). This is the day of obeying the command, “ Be filled with the Spirit” ; be strength ened in the Lord. Allow yourself to be empowered in Him. . . . We are not only born from above, pardoned and brought nigh, but we are united to Him on whom the fullness of the Holy Ghost has been bestowed. In Him “the promise o f the Father” has been fulfilled for us. He has the plenitude o f all Holy Ghost power. He has become to us the Fountain of all bless ings of the Spirit. . . . In Him you have all the fullness you need. . . . Thank God that He has blessed you with all blessings of the Spirit in Christ Jesus. To wait on the Lord is to know that fact. —Life o f Faith. OCTOBER 2 Just Open the Door “ That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith" (Eph. 3:17). How does He thus manifest Himself as He does not unto the world? I like to think, beloved, that He Himself brings us into this state. . . . Poor Bunyan, when God came to him with conviction of sin? saw in his vision a house o f beauty and of blessing where holy men and women were singing together in the very light of the Lord. But he was outside, and could not get within. . . . And that is the way it seems to some of us. W e say, “It is beautiful to live a life like that, where it is constant rest and victory, and we have Christ all the time to bless us and to make us a blessing to others.” “Yes,” they say, “it is a blessed way to live, but it [is not possible for us to get there.” Why, the incoming of Jesus will be the holiness, if you will just open the door. —A. B. S im pson . OCTOBER 3 His Benefits "Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits" (Psa. 103:2). The benefits of God are very high. They reach the sun, all-splendid in the sky. They reach the breezes and' the fruitful rain. They touch the stars that stud the nightly plain. The benefits o f God are very high. The benefits o f God are very wide. They stretch as far as pulsings o f the tide. They reach the farthest nation, tongue? and race. They meet the need o f every time and place. The benefits o f God are very wide. The benefits of God are very deep. They probe the chasms of profound- est sleep. They sink to misery’s extremest woe. Down to the blackest pit o f sin they go. The benefits o f God are very deep. . . . Bless God for all His benefits, my soul!— A mos R. W ells . OCTOBER 4 Getting Ready to Move “ W e have a building o f God, an house

n o t made w ith handsyieternal in the heavens’’ (2 Cor. 5:1). The owner of the tenement which I have occupied for many years has given notice that he will furnish but little or nothing more for repairs. I am advised to be ready to move. . . . It is strange how quickly one’s interest is transferred to the prospective home. I have been consulting maps of the new country and reading descriptions o f its inhabitants. One who visited it has returned, and from him I learned that it is beautiful beyond de scription. . . . Another, whose love to me has been proven by the greatest possible test, is now there. He has sent me several clusters of the most delicious fruits. After tasting them, all' food here seems insipid. . . . Often I am asked to make some new investments here, but my answer in every case is,M‘I am getting ready to move.” — S elected . OCTOBER 5 Training the Conscience "Holding faith, and a good conscience" (1 Tim. 1 :19). What a wonderful power is this con science that I carry within myself — a power that exercises authority over m e! . . . And how little time I spend in instruct ing this conscience of mine 1 How heed lessly I permit it to go its way, and lead me with it! Sometimes it speaks with the voice of God; sometimes I allow the ad versary to use it for his evil mouthpiece. Oh, purify my conscience, Thou God o f all spirits. Purify it from dead works to serve Thee unto life eternal. May all holy ambitions be my only desire. Make it as easy for me to do right as it has been to do wrong. Dwell Thou in me, and permit me to dwell in Thee, that Thy thoughts may be my thoughts forever. Amen.— S elected . OCTOBER 6 Clinging Faithfulness “ Ye are they which have continued with me in my temptations" (Lk. 22:28). Be faithful. The more faithful you are to Christ, the more joy you give to Him. Trust Him when all around doubt Him. Cling to H im ; continue with Him when all others leave Him, when Satan tempts you most to forsake Him. Be faithful to Him, and as He gave to the disciples greater opportunities, so •will He give to you. “Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy o f thy Lord.” Whoever you are, whatever position you occupy, be faithful, and Christ will one day say that to you. —J. D. K il b u r n . OCTOBER 7 Abounding Life "I am come that they might have life , . . . more abundantly" (John 10:10).
