OCTOBER 14 Bearing Fruit

OCTOBER 18 The Key to a Restful Life “Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for him" (Psa. 37:7). The habit of reckoning on Christ is the key to a restful life. Not only depend on His promises, but count on Him. Christ is more than His spoken and recorded words. . . . Is there an evil lurking in your heart, which you have tried in vain to quell? Is there some anxiety about one, dearer to you than life, who is drifting be yond your reach ? Is there a yearning for all that can be realized o f deliverance from sin, the filling o f the Spirit, the life and love o f God? Hand it all over to H im ; then go home and sit still. If there is any thing for you to do, He will tell you what it is, and give you grace to do it. But, if not, sit still, wait patiently, quiet yourself like a weaned child. He cannot forget; He will not procrastinate; He cannot fail. — S elected . OCTOBER 19 Waiting and Working “ Laborers together with God” (1 Cor. 3:9 ). Not only is God’s grace needed to open the door for His work to be done, but also to give wisdom and boldness in doing it. . . . . If we believe that God has opened the door in any matter, we should show our belief by stepping boldly in. . . . Ac tion at the right moment is as necessary in the Christian worker and soldier as prayer and patient waiting were at an earlier stage. And that action will be firm, sure, and accurate, in proportion as all the needs of the work have been carefully con sidered beforehand. It is evident that Nehemiah used his own common sense at the very time when he was depending abso lutely upon God. . . . He had foreseen the different branches of the work which he would need to take up, and the provision which would be required for them all. He presents a fine example of businesslike method and order, foresight and exactness, in their relation to God’s work. — H ubert B rooke . OCTOBER 20 I Know Christ “I know whom I have believed” (2 Tim. 1 : 12 ). I do not know Tomorrow’s way, I f dark or gladsome it may be But I know Christ, and come what may, I know that He abides with me 1 I do not know what may befall, I f gloom or gladness, peace or pain; But I know Christ, and through it all, I know His presence will sustain. I do not know when evening falls, If soon or late earth’s day grows dim; But I know Christ, and when He calls I know He’ll call me home to H im ! —E. M argaret C la r k s o n . OCTOBER 21 Promises and the Promiser "Keeping the covenant and mercy” (Dan. 9:4). At the back o f every promise stands the living, pleading, and prevailing High Priest o f our profession. W e may forget the faithful promise, but He will not; He will .present the incense of His merit and the engagements of God on our behalf in that

“ The Spirit o f truth . . . . he shall testify o f me: And ye also shall bear witness" (John 15:26, 27). Teaching must ever be a personal testi mony from experience to what Christ is and can do. As this note is sounded, the Holy Spirit carries the message as a liv ing reality to the heart. It is this that •will build up believers so that they can walk in such fellowship with Jesus Christ that He can reveal Himself through them. And it is this that will lead them to the knowledge of the indispensable secret of spiritual health—the prayer life in daily fellowship, in childlike love, and true consecration with the Father and the Son. — A ndrew M u r ray . “ The cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?" (John 18:11). Art thou unwilling, O believer, to drink the cup which thy Father hath given thee? It is a very different cup from that which the Saviour consented to drink for thee. It is wreathed around with the declaration: “All things work together for good to them that love God.” To look upon an affliction as indicative of alienated feelings on the part o f God is base indeed for those who profess to believe the testimony o f the cross. May not the Father and the Saviour be trusted to govern us, to guide us, to cor rect us, and to bless us? Shall we teach God what our interests demand? . . . Take the cup and drink it. Lo 1 one by one, the precious things you were demanding will be found in the cup. — G eorge B o w e n . OCTOBER 16 By a Sure Way “ I am the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6). In early life our path seems clearly de fined. W e must follow the steps of others, depend on their maxims, act on their ad vice, till suddenly we find ourselves at the head of the march; no footprints before us on the expanse of moorland, or o f sand. It is only when the years grow upon us that this sense o f waylessness, as it has been termed, oppresses us. At such time the lips of Christ answer, “I am the way.” . . . . “ The Lord will go before you.” Remember that the Good Shepherd, when He puts forth His sheep, goes before them, and they follow Him.— Alliance Weekly. OCTOBER 17 Promises Which Cannot Be Broken “Having therefore these promises, . . . . let us cleanse ourselves?’ (2 Cor. 7:1). “The promises o f God do not belong to you,” is one o f the malicious falsehoods which Satan insinuates into the hearts of Christ’s disciples. The Bible is, substan tially, a book of promises. It begins with the promise of a Saviour, and ends with “whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.” . . . . Now, what does Satan attempt to do? He insinuates the falsehood into the hearts o f men that these promises do not belong to them! . . . . A thirsty soul is made to say, “Alas, they are not for me.” Up from the fountain o f God’s infinite benevolence come welling the precious words, “Ask, and ye shall receive,” “All things are yours,” “ How shall he not with him also freely give us all things?” —W .
