THE NEWEST ADDITION TO THE JONES FAMILY Welcoming Baby Georgia Into the World

On the afternoon of May 16, Margaret and I welcomed the newest addition to the Jones Smiles

with that subtle infant awe, taking in everything that she’s never seen before.

These moments in life definitely make you feel grateful and appreciative. We are grateful for our new arrivals, these moments together as a family, and for health. We are also thankful to all the doctors and nurses that have cared for Margaret and little Georgia. Finally, I want to thank all of our

family: our new baby daughter, Georgia Ruth Jones. There’s

nothing quite like holding a newborn — even if this is my fourth time around. She was a perfectly healthy, happy newborn, 7 pounds 5 ounces, and 20 inches.

We have all been eagerly awaiting

the arrival, but it’s possible that my oldest daughter, Eloise, could have been the most delighted to finally meet Georgia. Ever since finding out we were having a little girl, Eloise has been absolutely thrilled with the idea of no longer being the only girl amidst a pair of energetic boys. When we told her that she’d soon have a brand-new baby sister, I’m not sure I’ve ever seen anybody so excited. It’s adorable to see how all the kids have adapted to their latest sibling. Everyone is eager to hold her and to get her to look at them and smile, though she’s only just now beginning to show real awareness of her surroundings. She looks around

patients for being so patient and understanding; my schedule (and world) has been turned upside down the last few weeks, but I wouldn’t have it any other way! – Dr. Eric Jones

THE POSSIBILITIES OF BROTH

For centuries, broth has been a culinary staple among cultures the world over. You can sip it as a warm beverage, use it to make soups and sauces, or use it as a flavor enhancer for rice, vegetables, and countless other foods. Whether it’s bone, beef, chicken, or fish broth, the possibilities are practically endless! What makes broth really special is the liquid’s remarkable nutritional content. The protein-packed brew is loaded with vitamins and minerals, along with collagen and amino acids — everything a body needs. Broth has even been called an immunity booster and an inflammation reducer. When it comes to its effect on inflammation, it’s easy to see how it earned its reputation. It’s a source of many joint-friendly nutrients, including glucosamine. While broth is said to alleviate different kinds of inflammation — from joint aches to gastrointestinal discomfort — as well as shorten colds and even reduce symptoms related to allergies, the jury’s still

out on the science behind it. Research into these benefits of broth is extremely limited.

That said, this astonishing liquid still deserves a place in your kitchen. Though research into broth’s many benefits may be limited, the research into its nutritional value is not. We know it’s a great source of many of the nutrients our bodies need to function — and function well. Think of broth as a supplemental source of everyday nutrition. It’s certainly not a meal replacement. If you haven’t, give it a try. You may find it helps with our aching joints or digestion. As a beverage, it makes a great addition to any daily routine. Have a cup with lunch or dinner, or as an afternoon snack. Or, make broth- based soups a regular part of your diet. After all, there is a very good reason why so many people swear by the healing powers of chicken noodle soup. Discover it for yourself!

NOT-SO-PEARLY WHITES? The Facts About Teeth Whitening

Even if you’ve been brushing and flossing every day of your life, you may find that your teeth lack the luster or bright white hue they used to have. Lucky for you, there are numerous treatments that can bring the shine back to your smile. How It Works Teeth whitening is a simple process. Either you or your dentist will apply products that contain one of two tooth bleaches, either hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. These chemicals break tooth stains into smaller pieces, dispersing the discoloration and brightening the teeth. Whitening Options There are three ways to get your teeth glistening again. Whitening toothpastes that have special chemical or polishing agents can aid in stain removal. But unlike bleaches, these products are only able to remove stains on the surface of your teeth. In-office bleaching is often your best option, and this option usually only requires a single office visit. During the process, dentists place either a gel or rubber shield to protect your gums, then apply bleach to the teeth. Often, this is accompanied by a special light or laser to enhance the effectiveness of the whitening agent. SUDOKU Puzzle 1 (Medium, difficulty rating 0.45)

If you want to bleach at home, you can get peroxide-containing whiteners from your dentist. Usually, these come in the form of a gel that is placed into a tray that then fits over your teeth. Whitening strips may also be used. It’s important to note that the bleaching agents used in at-home bleaching are less concentrated than the ones your dentist uses in the office.

Ask your dentist today if teeth whitening is an option for your smile — and start restoring your teeth to their former beauty!

THE MOUNTAINS FROM HELL?

With names like Mt. Baal, The Ogre, and Goblin, you might guess that the Idaho mountains known as the Seven Devils are rough going — and you’d be right. Most of the peaks in the range sport intimidating names that bring Dante’s “Inferno” to mind and are some of the toughest territory in the Pacific Northwest. They also comprise some of the prettiest territory, because that’s how these things work. Spectacular views of Hells Canyon, the Snake River, and western Idaho will blow adventurers’ minds. Thick with dense pine forests and dotted with lakes, the Seven Devils range is unmatched in its splendor and diversity. Many fishermen hike into the mountains to experience the excellent trout fishing in the area’s alpine lakes. This is a trip best suited for experienced backpackers. Backpackers on the Seven Devils Loop, the most popular trail in the region, face a 27-mile hike best spread out over three to five days due to the massive elevation changes. With water sources few and far between, and help much further away than that, the Seven Devils range is not for the faint of heart or the inexperienced.

on the whole trek. If you’re trying to escape the crowds at more popular hiking locations, this is the place to go. Come to think of it, if you’re trying to escape anything — from angry creditors to mafia loan sharks — you should load up your pack and head for these hills.

For this reason, it’s a badge of honor among those who love the outdoors. You’d be lucky to run into more than a handful of people
