October Kitchen During Thanksgiving Is Like …

If I were on death row and they asked me what I wanted my last meal to be, my answer would be easy: Thanksgiving dinner. I don’t know if it’s the food or the sense of family that comes with gathering around the table for a meal, but it’s terrific. I think that’s why I’ve always enjoyed preparing our Thanksgiving menus and providing customers with delicious meals. While I’ve always made family dinner Thanksgiving boxes, I began making single- person boxes during the pandemic. Many people didn’t have family gatherings in 2020, but I still wanted people to have the chance to eat a festive meal. It was a huge hit, and I decided to serve the boxes again in 2021. After seeing October Kitchen’s success last year, my team and I are making even more individual boxes this year. I want everyone to enjoy the holidays, and I understand that some people may not have the means to cook Thanksgiving dinner, or they may not have family nearby to visit or cook for. No one should feel excluded during the holiday season, and it’s heartbreaking to see people alone at Thanksgiving. October Kitchen continues to make single-person boxes so everyone can have a little taste of home when they eat our meals. Prepping for an Olympic Sport

Preparing for these meals feels like an Olympic sport — it amazes me how, each year, my team and I can get everything done while we’re running around like chickens with our heads cut off. To stay ahead of the curve and prepare for the holiday, I prep my team for Nov. 24 back in September. We first finalize our Thanksgiving menu and begin outlining the recipes we’ll use. Then, in October, we receive all our orders and ensure we have everything we need the weekend before Thanksgiving. That’s when things get really crazy. I could count on one hand how many hours of sleep I got during the days of making our Thanksgiving boxes. My team and I are in the kitchen nearly 24 hours every day the weekend before the holiday simply to push turkeys through our ovens. We can’t waste any time if we want to make all our dinner boxes in time for our customers to pick them up.

Is Met With a Great Reward ONE TEEN’S HONESTY

To thank Rodriquez for his kindness and honesty, Martin and Marquez created

If you’ve ever lost your wallet or purse, your main worry might be that you’ll never get it back and that you’ll have to cancel your credit cards. Even if someone returns your belongings to you, the first thing you might do is check to see if anything is missing. But there are still honest people in this world, like 17-year-old Adrian Rodriquez. Rodriquez found a purse in the parking lot of a grocery store, and instead of bringing the bag inside and hoping a worker would contact the owner, he decided to hand-deliver it himself. When Rodriquez arrived at his destination, the purse’s owner, Eliana Martin, wasn’t home, so he left the handbag with her roommate, Melina Marquez. Once Martin got home and found out someone had retrieved her purse, she wanted to thank the individual in person. So, she looked at her Ring camera and was in awe that it was a young high school student. To find out who Rodriquez was and how she could contact him, Martin shared her experience on social media, hoping the teen would find the post. Fortunately, Martin’s strategy worked, and she got in contact with Rodriquez.

a GoFundMe campaign to reward Rodriquez. At the time of writing, Martin and Marquez’s campaign had 847 donors and raised almost

$20,000. In July, Rodriquez met Martin and announced the money she raised in honor of his honesty. Rodriquez was both happy and shocked at the lengths Martin went to show her gratitude. “My mom always told me since I was little to always do the right thing, even when nobody’s around. I didn’t expect nothing [in return],” Rodriquez told 10News. It’s amazing to see how one act of kindness can make a world of difference for the person giving the gesture and receiving it.

OUR EYES ARE BIGGER THAN OUR STOMACHS

4 WAYS TO PORTION YOUR FOOD

Sometimes when we’re hungry, we see a lot of food and pile the max amount onto our plates. By doing this, we can overindulge and eat more food than is necessary. Here are four strategies to help you eat the right amount of food so you can satisfy your hunger without overeating. 1. Use smaller dinnerware. Research shows that the size of your silverware, plates and bowls can influence your food intake. If you use a large plate, your food seems smaller, which can lead to you putting more food onto your plate. The next time you cook at home, try using smaller plates and bowls before you eat. It may reduce your chances of overeating. 2. Your hands can act as a portion guide. Your hands typically correspond to your body size, which makes them a great tool to see how big your food portions should be. One to two palm-size servings of meats, poultry and beans should be enough. Vegetables and salads are also recommended to be one to two fist-size servings, while whole grains are one to two servings with your hand cupped. 3. Eat slowly. It’s tempting to scarf down a delicious meal as fast as possible, but try to take your time. If you’re a fast eater, you’re not giving your brain time to register if you’re full or not — causing most people to overeat. It takes around 20 minutes from the time you start eating for your brain to send signals to notify you that you’re full. So savor your meal by taking your time between each bite. 4. Before eating, drink some water. As mentioned above, the brain sends signals to the rest of your body when it’s full. Drinking more water can fill up that space in your stomach and make you less hungry throughout the day. So drink a cup of water a few minutes before each meal to help you reduce your food intake. At October Kitchen, we give you the perfect food portions that will leave you feeling full and happy. So, try one of our meals today — your taste buds and brain will thank you later!

SAINTS SQUASH THANKSGIVING TOPAZ TURKEY VETERAN

CASSEROLE ELECTION GRATITUDE HARVEST RAKING REMEMBRANCE

But the turkey isn’t the only thing we’re preparing. We’re also making crusts, baking pies, skinning and mashing potatoes, chopping items for stuffing, jamming fresh cranberries, mixing my specialty apple butter, baking dinner rolls, sautéing stuffing and much more. Even our office staff pitches in by running around and ensuring every box has all its dishes and fixings. It may seem hectic and overwhelming, but I promise it’s organized chaos. Instead of thinking about how chaotic our lives are as we prep these meals, I think about the hundreds of people who get to have a Thanksgiving dinner — that’s all the motivation I need. From our whole team at October Kitchen, thank you so much for supporting our crazy Thanksgiving ambitions. It’s an honor to provide you and your loved ones with delicious and nutritious meals each year.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

4 Reasons Seniors Should Have a Garden

IT’S NEVER TOO LATE TO GROW A GREEN THUMB! 4 BENEFITS OF GARDENING FOR SENIORS

take time to reflect on the past and plan for the future.

Staying mentally and physically healthy doesn’t mean you have to attend a fancy gym or hire a lifestyle coach. You can enhance your overall health in your own backyard by starting a garden. It can offer a wide range of health benefits, and here are just a few. Gardening reduces stress and increases relaxation. Life can feel overwhelming. Many family, financial or medical issues arise with age, and falling into a downward spiral is easy. Your first line of defense against stress can be your garden! Gardens offer a place of quiet reprieve where you can

Exercising never felt so green. Finding ways to stay active can be difficult, especially if mobility is an issue. Gardening can be a great way to keep active without the complications of rigorous activity. Simply moving plants around, creating holes for seeds, cultivating soil or watering the garden are all great ways to maintain or improve strength. Eating healthy food contributes to a healthy lifestyle. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is enhanced by what you eat. By devoting time to a garden, you can reap the health benefits of the delicious fruit and vegetables you grow there. Winter is

quickly approaching, so consider which healthy crops to plant this time of year. Root vegetables like carrots, onions, garlic and turnips are great options to start growing during November. These hearty vegetables are also excellent sources of fiber and essential nutrients. If you’re unsure where to start in your garden this season, you can refer to the 2022 Planting Guide in the almanac at Almanac.com/gardening/planting- calendar. All it takes to start a garden is a seed, so plant a new, healthy lifestyle and watch it grow!
