«"ey (parents) start thinking about this pretty early,» Crawford said, adding that those early projections then are adjusted over the summer to account for families who move out of or into the district. As of the start of September, the pre-regis- tration project for Kindergarten to Grade 8 for all of the Upper Canada district tallied at about 17,700. "e senior classes projection for Grades 9 to 12 at present sits at about 9300. Crawford is optimistic that the !nal registration report that UCDSB trustees will receive at the end of October will show even higher numbers. «I would think wemay be exceeding that,» she said, adding that the pre-registration numbers for Kindergarten and the higher elementary grades show a reversal in the trend for the past few years of declining student numbers for the district. «"at’s the good news. I’m really happy.» Over at the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario (CDSBEO) the district’s Back to school for students also means back to the school zone speed limits for motorists. "e OPP reminds drivers that the lower speed limit posted for school zones applies during regular school hours, Monday to Fri- day. Failure to obey the school zone speed limit means !nes and demerit points on a driver’s licence. More serious penalties may be possible in cases of excessive speed which puts school children at risk. Drivers are also reminded that there are special rules for tra#c safety where school buses are concerned. When the front and rear signal lights of a school bus are %ashing and the stop sign is extended from the dri- ver’s side it means that students are either getting on or getting o$ the bus. Drivers

maintenance department presented trustees during the Sept. 1 boardmeeting with a sum- mary report of all priority projects completed over the past 12-month period leading up to the launch of the new school year. «It has indeed been an extremely busy year for our department,» stated Roger Cauley, CDSBEO maintenance manager. «"e schools look great, and we’ve worked to develop the designs and concepts with the supervisory o#cers with the students’ priorities in mind.» CDSBEO maintenance sta$ worked on upgrades and additions projects at 42 faci- lities within the school district dealing with energy e#ciency, compliance with provin- cial accessibility regulations, and capital improvements funded through education ministry assistance funds. Maintenance sta$ also did inspections of playground facilities at CDSBEO scho- ols over the summer and did repairs where needed.

Summer is now over in the o"cial sense as far asmost young people inOntario are concerned as now the province’s English- language school districts welcome their students back to class following the close of the Labour Day long weekend. "e !nal enrolment numbers for all school districts, both English- and French- language, won’t be con!rmed until the end of September when all schools have tallied up both those students who arrived for class on opening day and those late-registrations which are composed of students whomoved into a district from somewhere else or whose family has gotten back from a late summer vacation trip or for some other valid rea- son. French schools began their new term during the !rst week of September while English schools reopened the Tuesday after Labour Day. But o#cials for the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) are already antici- pating a good turnout for their attendance records this new semester andmaybe even see an increase in the overall total registra- tions. Which Sarah Crawford, UCDSB plan- ningmanager, noted will have an immediate payo$ for the district inmore provincial fun- ding support from the Education Ministry. «Part of our budget (revenue) is based on student enrolment,» Crawford said, adding that so far, the preliminary pre-registration !gures give UCDSB o#cials cause to be optimistic. Advance registration projections for the 2015-2016 school termbegan in November 2014 and carried on into December of that year as the school district gathered feed- back from area parents about where they expected to sign up their youngest children for pre-school and Kindergarten during the next term.
