Unique Rehabilitation Opportunity in Nigeria
A new avenue of relief work and spiritual ministry for the Su dan In te rio r M is s io n has opened up in former rebel-held territory in the Rivers State of Ni geria with an appeal from the Gov ernment to re-open the Birabi Me morial Grammar School at Bori, near Port Harcourt. Last year, at the invitation of the Government, an inter-mission medical relief team, headed by S IM ’s Dr. Dion Warren, re-opened the Bori Hospital and cared for the hundreds of refugees in the area. By the end of the year, the Gov ernment was able to reassume re- sponsibilty for the hospital, and the work of the medical team was phased out. The Commissioner of Education in the State, impressed by the ef fectiveness of the medical team in meeting the physical and spiritual needs of the community, ap proached SIM and The Evangelical Churches of West Africa (ECWA, SIM-affiliated churches) regarding the possibility of educational assist ance in the State. After discussion with the Military Governor of the State and the Commissioner of Re habilitation, it was agreed that SIM would send in a team of Nigerian and missionary teachers to re-open the Birabi Grammar School at Bori, one mile from the hospital. teachers and a team of Nigerians had moved in. Two more teachers are waiting for visas. Only 16 of the 32 secondary schools in Rivers States have been re-opened since the war, 376 of the 600 primary schools, and 1 of 6 teachers’ colleges. Most schools were looted, equipment taken or destroyed, furniture removed, li brary and textbooks burned. There is only minimal equipment in the schools, and students stand at a few desks and try to learn by tak ing notes mostly from unqualified teachers. Besides providing teachers for the school, the Commissioner for Education has asked SIM to solicit finances for equipment and sup plies. The State will pay teachers’ salaries and running expenses of the school. The money paid to the missionary teachers will cover their travel, setting up living quarters, and help with the extra high cost of living. Dr. James Kraakevik, SIM Edu cation Director for West Africa, out lined S IM ’s 2-point objective in go ing into the Birabi School project: (1) To help meet an urgent need, where many children have been out of school for the three-year duration of the civil war.
