For new parents, Sandy says the best advice she can give is to be present and allow little ones to learn while making honest mistakes. Similar to young adolescents, she says it’s important to assure them that mistakes are required for growth and experience until they are at the age where they will know how to make better choices. Sandy adds that listening without judge- ment is crucial and to not hesitate to sit out while they process their feelings and emo- tions through their problems. While parents can’t always solve their child’s problems, they can support their emotional well-being by listening. “More importantly, apologize when you’re wrong,” Sandy emphasizes. “As parents, we might feel we have all the answers, but keep in mind that their life experiences are differ- ent from ours and taking a step to self-reflect will help you understand your child and maintain a strong bond.” And she says to remember, parents don’t have all the answers, but they can definitely help their kids take the right path to find them. Living in Colorado, Sandy says her favorite part of raising kids here is the outdoors and the plenty of opportunities to do things. “The parks provide a place where families can go to connect with other families and build positive relationships through their little ones,” she adds. Although Sandy says date nights with her husband are limited due to their big family, they cherish the two to three nights they have when possible. She adds that because the family is so accustomed to being together, sometimes it feels like something is missing on date night.
