A “good” first year for complex experiment RICHARD MAHONEY richard.mahoney@eap.on.ca

works with recreation director Liette Va- lade to try to optimize use of the facilities, and erase the red ink at the complex. Since opening in 1979, the facilities have oper- ated at a deficit. The target is to have a surplus of $160,000. This goal is based on a pre-agreed rate of annual average rev- enue of the facility for the past three years of $500,000. HST will receive 50 per cent of all new revenue. Under the contract that went into effect September 1, the aim was to increase reve- nues from the two rinks by $100,000 within the first 12 months and up to $200,000 by

“It was a good year in regards to getting to know the city and how the public uses the complex,” says Anderson, owner and head coach of the Hawkesbury Hawkesbury junior hockey club and a former profession- al player. “I spent most of my efforts in the first year working on ice sales and building programs to offer to our local and the sur- rounding area players. We have a great fa- cility and as our area grows with new busi- nesses coming into town we should see the facility’s use increase.” Last summer, the municipality adopted the new game plan whereby Anderson

year 5. However, figures recently presented at town council indicate that those projec- tions may have been overly optimistic. Ad- ditional revenues are expected to be about $66,000. That is not too bad for the first year, Valade observes. Anderson expressed confidence that he can reach new clients. “Like most recreation facilities that were built 20 to 30 years ago, the idea was to get children off the streets by keeping them active and in some cases, out of trouble. Fast forward to 2013 and we are now in the age of technology and social media. It is rare you will even see kids loitering in the facility,” he notes. “The way around this is to catch the inter- est of the public with programs they want to be a part of.” This past winter, he created on-ice train- ing programs for hockey teams and small groups. “As a former NHL player, coach of the Hawks and owner of a hockey business, Hockey Specific Training, there seemed to be an interest. It was a good first year and I feel it will attract even more teams and groups come next September.” He also set up a spring hockey league, in which 175 players participated. There were levels from initiation though peewee. “I tried to involve bantam and midget-level players but the interest wasn’t there this year. I believe next year we will expand from 15 teams to hopefully 20 to 25 teams.” Anderson tried to organize a ball hockey program this summer but a lack of interest means he will shelve that idea until next year. “We have two huge spaces at 17,000 square feet each available to rent June and July at a rate of about $60 an hour. I don’t know many places that offer that. There are many different opportunities available within our facility to offer the public that can help promote and offer their business- es. There are many organizations that could definitely benefit from the use of our facil- ity.” Traffic stop ends in drug seizure “There are many organizations that could definitely benefit from the use of our facility.” HAWKESBURY| Two L’Orignal residents have been charged after a quantity of illicit drugs and a knife were found dur- ing a traffic stop in Hawkesbury. May 11, Ontario Provincial Police Con- stables Jean-Michel Maceus and Jona- than Bouchard intercepted a blue 2000 GMC pick-up truck on Main Street. Offi- cers found a knife that was accessible to the driver and passenger. Marco Plouffe, 50, was charged with possession of methamphetamine and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. The passenger, Isabelle Cadieux, 37, was charged with possession of methamphetamine. The accused were released and are scheduled to appear in court June 12 in L’Orignal.

HAWKESBURY | A new strategy to improve the financial scoreboard at the Robert Hartley Sports Complex has been deemed a success, even though the experiment will likely fall short of its year 1 monetary goal. Shawn Anderson is pleased with the initial results of the management agreement his firm, Hockey Specific Training Consultants, signed with the town in September.
