AES Helps UN1F1ED 2 Control Scrap, Dust BY GREG KISHBAUGH
USC To Build $80M Plant In DE, Close NJ Operation U.S. Corrugated (USC) reported that it plans to build an approximately $80 million corru- gated cardboard box plant near Dover, Dela- ware, while relocating its longstanding oper- ations in Newark, New Jersey, operations to the First State. With the goal of breaking ground in No- vember of this year, the 497,000-square-foot “super plant” will be located on a 40-acre par- cel between Camden and Dover. It’s estimat- ed that once U.S. Corrugated of Delaware is operational, it should bring around 150 jobs to the area. USC founder and Chairman, Dennis Mehiel, envisions a facility featuring the latest in industry-leading technology. He said that USC will close its 35-year-old, full-line box plant in Newark, N.J., and plans to transfer op- erations to the new plant by the end of 2021. “We’ve had tremendous upgrades since we opened our New Jersey facility, and it’s been upgrading in leaps and bounds in the last 20 to 25 years,” said Mehiel “There’s sub- stantial opportunity to grow in Dover to meet significant demands we will face in the next two to three years.”
UN1F1ED 2 Global Packaging Group (UGPG2) was looking for a better way to control its waste. The packaging provider, with corporate head- quarters in Sutton, Massachusetts, wanted a system that would allow the company to individually control its operation based on what piece
of equipment it was running. With its eye toward the future, the compa- ny also required that the system allowed for expansion and could sup- port the company’s molded fiber machines with the scrap corrugated conversion operation. With those parameters in mind, UN1F1ED 2 turned to a system from AES (Advanced Equipment Sales), which the company felt was the best option for its particular needs. “It offered simplicity, ease of use,” said Frank Tavares, Global Process Engineer Manager of UN1F1ED 2 . “AES also had great flexibility in dealing with our team in regard to designing and installing the system.” The scrap and dust removal and baling system AES installed at UN- 1F1ED 2 provides the converter with a means to tie all of its production equipment together in regard to controlling the waste it generates. The AES system collects scraps from six points of generation, includ- ing diecutters, folder/gluers and other production equipment. A new shredder is also integrated into the scrap system. UN1F1ED 2 Global Packaging Group (UGPG2) invested in a scrap collection system from Advanced Equipment Sales (AES) to help control its waste.

USC To Build (CONT’D FROM PAGE 1 )
Once the Dover manufacturing plant is fully operation- al, it will have the capacity to produce approximately 250 percent more boxes than the Newark facility and bring in $120 million in additional revenue per year, he said. Mehiel started the company as Four M Manufacturing in 1966 and it flourished in the niche of interior corrugated partitions. From its first plant in Newark, the company ex- panded to foam and sheet plants across the country. USC launched in 2006 as a new packing venture. Pending approval from state and local officials, the Do- ver plant will be U.S. Corrugated’s fourth “super plant” in the past decade, focusing on using robotics and machines to streamline the process. The first was built in Los Ange- les as a joint venture with Acorn Paper Products, while the second was located in Georgia and the third opened in Indiana in 2019. “We will have the ability to assemble boxes without the touch of human hands in most cases. In the past, we would have crews handling about 30,000 pounds of corrugated boxes into a machine per shift,” said Four M Manufacturing Chief Operating Officer Jeff Coleman. “Now we can em- ploy our robots to do that,” . “Instead, we can turn our staff into innovators and problem-solvers for our clients.” Mehiel was attracted to the Dover site for multiple rea- sons, but principally because it sits in one of the state’s 25 Opportunity Zones.

40 ft of paper travel from preheater to hot plates 3 seconds of heat, glue and bonding 1 chance to get it right! the ZONE
Design & Production
Chicago Electric offers 10 technology solutions to control ‘the Zone’ CORRUGATOR Sectoral preheating plate
Our sectoral preheating plates provide direct heat by means of a double steam circuit, allowing for efficient heating in hard-to-access locations, as well as to act as a steam shower to open the paper’s fibre, making it receptive to absorbing the heat and the glue.
This translates into increased speed and improved quality of the cardboard sheet finish.
The system’s main advantages are as follows:
• The plate may only be used to heat, only to humidify, or both options at the same time. • The plate is sectored, which allows for applying humidity to the sections. • It provides temperature in previously inaccessible locations and near the location needed. • It compensates the loss of temperature dissipated due to distance, speed or limitations of the exiting preheaters. • Quick transferring of heat to the paper. • The combination of the hot plate and steam shower allows for providing heat even to the hardest papers to heat. • Does not dry out the paper. • Possibility of operating as a humidifier and pre-conditioner. • Maintains and improves the fibre’s elasticity. • Acts according to the operator’s needs. • Facilitates the paper’s hygroscopy to absorb the glue and improve rubberising.

calibrations and settings. Bar systems avoid this, but compensate this with the risk of exces- sive glue application. The system contains many wearing parts. Solution The contact roll combines the ad antage of both systems and ensures minimum contact between board and applicator roll. The system uses small pneumatic cylinders in order to achieve a “soft touch.”
6. Gap Control 7. Curved Plate 8. Roller Shoe Press When it comes to a short-term increas of web tension, spring loaded systems with shoes or airpressure activated system have problems in compensating these. The system is lifted for a short time. This may result in de-lamination and in the ‘double kiss’ effect. Solution For a defined and exact bonding point of the web fiv weight rollers will be installed usually over the first flat hotplate of the heating section. The rolls are mounted into a frame, which is actuated by means of two pneumatic cylinders. P oductivity Issu —Double Kiss Bonding

It offers a wide range of set- tings. The loadi g pressure can be varied, the number of shoes can be lifted in accordance t the line speed. The outer shoes can be lifted in accordance to the paper width. The shoe bars will be delivered pre-assembled for a short installation time. —Liftable for easy paper infeed and for cleaning of the machine —Position adjustable in paper direction to avoid grooves in hotplate Press Productivity Issue—Poor Heat Transfer Rollers are usually limiting the heat transfer, since they often have contact mainly on the edges of the plates due to wear or bent plates. They also cause often loss of caliper and bearing need to be replaced frequently. Airpressure actuated systems can only supply a limited pressure and have com- pared to shoe systems a closed surface. Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin based ND Packaging, a sub- sidiary of Hong Kong, China based ND Paper, Inc. (Nine Dragons Paper Holdings Limited), has opened a new cor- rugated plant in Mount Pleasant. Last year, ND Paper purchased a 350,000-square-foot warehouse and distribution facility for $15.5 million and is making an additional investment of more than $30 million for renovations and equipment. The company plans to cre- ate up to 40 jobs at the location. “We chose Racine County not only because of their es- tablished reputation of being a welcoming business com- munity, but also because of the people on the local level and the relationships established,” said John Parent, ND Packaging General Manager. “We are excited for the fu- ture of the company in this region and the ability to create employment opportunities for the people here.” In 2018, ND Paper invested $189 million into the Cat- alyst Paper Mill in Biron, Wisconsin. The Mount Pleasant location, located 2.5 miles from I-94 in the Chicago-Mil- waukee corridor, will complement the Biron plant by man- ufacturing corrugated boxes. Over the past month, pro- duction machinery has been shipped to and installed in the Mount Pleasant plant. The company expects to start production by the fourth quarter of 2020.

In addition, information on past and potential upcoming changes to the NMFC, can be found in the CCSB’s Public Docket Files. Any shipper or manufactur- er having an interest in these projects is encouraged to contact the CCSB at research@nmfta.org. • Inquiries regarding the National Motor Freight Classi- fication’s (NMFC’s) minimum packaging requirements, or the NMFC’s rules, including Item (Rule) 222, can be sent directly to me (Erin) at topper@nmfta.org. She graciously added, “If you need any additional infor- mation regarding these topics, don’t hesitate to ask.” The NMFC specifies minimum packaging requirements to ensure that goods are adequately protected and can be handled and stowed in a manner that is reasonably safe and practicable, and therefore can withstand the normal rigors of the less-than-truckload environment. Carriers im- pose packaging rules in exchange for accepting liability for the articles they transport. They reserve the right to refuse articles they consider inadequately packaged. In June, we informed you of the two subjects then on the docket regarding full-scale density-based classes and re-naming items, referenced above by Ms. Topper. More recently, a new proposal seeks to address interpretive issues regarding NMFC provisions containing the terms coin- or currency-operated/operating. They are updating the definition to include credit & debit card operation. All proposals to amend the NMFC are noted in a docket at least 30 days in advance of the public meeting where they will be considered by the CCSB. Keynoting the conference will be Michael Doss, President and CEO of Graphic Packaging International, who will offer his insights on the state of the industry. Also headlining the event are Mark King, VP, Global Diversity & Inclusion at WestRock, and Jeff Rosensweig, economist and Professor at Emory University, who will offer the latest economic fore- cast for folding cartons. “While we won’t be meeting in Savannah as originally planned, I am looking forward to seeing our membership come together virtually,” said Ben Markens, PPC President. “Going virtual has also allowed us to give our converter members new value for employees at every level of their organizations. We’ve implemented an enterprise registration so compa- nies can affordably send three or more staff members.” The Fall Meeting virtual platform has also opened the door to another new opportunity: PPC’s first virtual trade show. A must-attend for plant employees who would have attended drupa, the virtual tradeshow will allow boxmakers to learn about the latest technologies and products from industry suppliers who can connect in live-time with the attendees who visit their virtual booths. As always, PPC 2020 Fall Meeting will feature an awards ceremony for the winners of their North American Paperboard Packaging Competi- tion, as well as the winners of the 2020 Paperboard Packaging Alliance Student Design Challenge. Administered and hosted by PPC and judged by a jury of packaging professionals, industry experts, and professors, the North American Paperboard Packaging Competition is the premier competition for carton manufacturers involved in the concept, design, print, performance, and shelf appeal of paperboard packaging. The Paperboard Packaging Alliance (PPA) is a joint initiative of the American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) and PPC. Its mission is to promote the benefits of paperboard packaging and products to influ- ence preference for these materials in packaging design and selection. Cascades Launches 100% Recycled Thermoformed Cardboard Food Tray Kingsey Falls, Quebec, Canada based Cascades is launching the first 100 percent recycled and recyclable thermoformed cardboard tray designed for fresh food packers using automated equipment in North America. The thermoformed tray delivers an innovative food packaging solution that was developed entirely using a
the recyclability of the cardboard. Unlike traditional con- tainers coated with a thin layer of plastic or other non-recy- clable coatings, the tray is easily recyclable. Its SurfSHIELD water-based coating also helps preserve the integrity and freshness of food, reducing food waste. This container joins the range of cardboard trays launched by Cascades in 2019. It sets itself apart by us- ing thermoforming, which gives it an optimal design for automated food packaging without compromising on equipment performance. Its rigidity has been rigorously tested to ensure that the tray is compatible with auto- matic unstacking, in addition to working on high-speed systems. Its large stacking capacity speeds up filling and optimizes transport and storage. This tray is thus on the leading edge of the food market with its design combin- ing efficiency and respect for resources. “We have always believed that eco-responsibility and performance can go hand in hand,” said Luc Langevin, President and Chief Operating Officer of Cascades Spe- cialty Products Group. “This innovative product accom- plishes both: it is a high-performance solution for food packaging, which at the same time helps conserve re- sources. Our goal is to pursue, along with our customers, a large-scale transformation of food packaging for the benefit of the environment.” This Cascades Fresh packaging is primarily intended for food producers and processors, in particular for meat, poultry, fish, fresh fruit and vegetables.
circular economy approach and ecodesign principles. The tray is composed of 100 percent recycled fibres, mostly sourced from post-consumer sources certified “Recycled” under the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) standard. In addition, it is designed with a patented water-based coat- ing that protects it from moisture without compromising

AES Helps UN1F1ED 2 (CONT’D FROM PAGE 1 )
The AES System is said to offer heavy duty perfor- mance in a compact footprint along with lower operating costs; through its use UN1F1ED 2 was actually able to re- ceive a rebate from its electrical utility. The scrap material travels through pneumatic con- veyance ducting by means of material handling fans to a 60,000 CFM AirShark separator before being deposited into an automatic baler. The system includes a dust collec- tor, as well. AES provided a turnkey equipment and installation package with professional project management. The scope of AES’ work included a full electrical control pack- age with touch screen interface, rigging and installation, integration of all equipment, piping and components, structural steel fabrication and erection, and start-up, com- missioning and training. The origins of UN1F1ED 2 date back to 1988 when Art Mahassel founded Atlas Box & Crating Co. in Sutton, Mas- sachusetts, dedicating the new company to producing custom crates. The company expanded into foam and corrugated products and it grew from its headquarters in Massachusetts to subsidiary plants in North Carolina and New Jersey, and continuing to expand overseas with facil- ities in Ireland, Poland, Czech Republic and China.
